Back in the day people could memorize phone numbers, and lots of them. What's the difference between remembering an IPv6 address and, say, four phone numbers in the proper order?
Looking at your sig, the names of languages (eg. English and German) are capitalized in English. Not ALL words capitalized in German are lowercase in other languages.;-)
Well done, PopeRatzo. You really called him out on that particular choice of words! How DARE he carelessly mix up PC and laptop! It's such a good thing we have you here to put people in their place over these transgressions!
The thing is that unless you are in a room with no other sounds, headphones quickly become the superior experience. If someone else in the room is playing a game, or your dog is trying to get at an itch on its back, or kids are playing with Legos on the floor, or... then the ambient noise will drown out a lot of the sound from your speakers, while the headphones by design send the sound straight into your ears.
I'd say for games like Fallout 4 or stealth-based games with proper use of the stereo channel, having headphones improves the experience because you can hear where the enemies are.
If I own a large (abandoned) warehouse, and I set it up to be used every other weekend for hosting a massive flea market or similar concept where private people can peddle their wares, old stuff someone else might want etc., am I then obligated to provide healthcare for the people that show up to sell their stuff?
That's about the closest real-world analogy I can come up with over lunch.
While I agree with the idea of some kind of regulation of gun ownership (I'm European, after all) I don't think a waiting period will stop school shootings. How many school shootings happened in which the shooter bought the gun on his way to school?
They HAVE to listen in order to be turned on by their keyword.
However it's reasonable to assume that simply listening for the activation word or phrase should be handled locally; there's no parsing required, just a simple "Does this match?" comparison.
If a bank teller misunderstood you and sent all your money to some random guy you once mentioned you knew you'd probably change banks even if they got all your money back.
How would you like a car where you have to adjust the mirrors, change the position of the seat, and re-inflate the tires every single morning - as a DESIGN FEATURE?
Why do you assume that just because the car could notice something in the dark that human eyes could?
The whole point of self-driving cars is that they have better 'vision' than we do, that they (should) see things sooner and clearer.
At what point is it said that the unfortunate pedestrian was visible to the naked eye for six seconds rather than visible to radar, lidar, laser scan or whatever it is Uber cars use for area awareness?
Fact: SWATTER said he had hostages. Fact: Standard tactic in a hostage situation is putting a hostage in front of you, possibly to negotiate with SWAT. Fact: One person came out of the house, looked confused. Fact: Police opened fire when he seemed to start turning around towards the door, possibly to communicate with someone inside.
Anyone with a lick of sense would judge that if there was a hostage situation, HE was the hostage.
The problem is the anti-smokers don't want a compromise with the vaping. They want a FULL STOP or the right to punch smokers in the face for their habits. It's today's us vs. them.
If you invite Trump to your garden party, and he actually just asks as your average guest, making small talk with the other guests and so on, then he's just a guest.
If you invite Trump to your garden party and he starts using it as a political soapbox, then TRUMP doesn't get to kick other guests out of your garden party when they start booing at the buzzkill.
If you invite Trump to your garden party and he starts using it as a political soapbox, then YOU still get to kick the people out who go from booing to yelling, "Kill the President!" because hey, it is YOUR garden party.
If a company dies should we just forget they ever existed, without ever being able to go back to look at who and what they were? There were never any Amigas because Commodore went and died later on, and if Microsoft were to shut down tomorrow suddenly Windows and DOS have never existed?
You are promoting the very revisionism this article is complaining about.
What is the survival rate of a studio bought by Microsoft vs. one bought by EA?
This isn't even news for nerds. It's news for IT guys that AREN'T nerds.
Starting a company? Getting your own email server?
firstname.lastname@companyname.tld
Possibly add in aliases such as ceo@, cfo@, customerservice@ etc.
STOP allowing for bullshit epeen addresses, period. Do it from day one.

That the US is a collection of non-sovereign states and the EU is a collection of sovereign countries?
Let's hope Slashdot and/or Youtube have made sure to get the proper permissions to show such a video ...
If they provide coffee at all.

Only in the US.

At least he's not MY President.
Because I'm European.

Duck and cover.

Calm down, mate.

Well that would make an interesting job ad.
It is sad when I read the sentence "That guy who recently drove a vehicle into a crowd" and my first reaction is, "Which one?"
The problem is the anti-smokers don't want a compromise with the vaping. They want a FULL STOP or the right to punch smokers in the face for their habits. It's today's us vs. them.
You forgot SAD.
Not really.

That is EXTREMELY short sighted.
