Somebody already mentioned writing down passwords and putting them in your wallet/purse.
I agree with the posters about how ridiculous password policies can get.
I support the idea of a universal password on a network, but in reality, this is not a good idea for the amount of time somebody could go to the bathroom, a walk-by haxor could start doing mean and nasty stuff on the network.
or ClamWin if the Micro$oft banner has to fly high for you at
http://clamwin.sourceforge.net
Everybody mentioned Mozilla (cool)
Nobody mentioned a ramdisk or a customized hosts file.
Somebody mentioned spybot, but not Ad-Aware.
Why the Ramdisk? Point your internet cache to it. It really will speed up your browsing, etc, and the best part is you never have to clean your internet cache out again.
I believe somebody already mentioned the Gimp (It's at 2.0 now, and has some really nifty features, but TWAIN Acquire still DOESN'T WORK under the Microsoft flag. GIMP devs point the finger at the TWAIN people. The TWAIN people don't even know WTF GIMP is.)
you're kidding, right?
We just talked about not paying for photoshop or picture-it or whatever else ilk.
TWAIn is a standard that wasn't created by microsoft.
so, it can't be that bad, can it?
Shocking, really considering this to be an open source crowd, free as in beer, not free as in speech or whatever.
Don't like it?
BREW YOUR OWN!
I do like budweiser, though I prefer corona's or dos equis better (reminds me of our honeymoon down mexico way.)
*puts on asbestos underwear*
Twain Acquire on Windows with multiple TWAIN sources?
sorry
I just wish they'd fix it.
TWAIN came out with a new spec. Not sure how big of a deal it would be to get the new spec incorporated.
I skimmed instead of RTFA, but isn't this carrier wave technology, and if so, how does it interfere with HAM radio? Or, am I way the heck off the mark here?
Extra Battery
(My Dell Laptop has a spot for 2 batteries, so both can be charged at the same time or installed at the same time and give you 2x the battery life.)
Auto/AC adapter.
extra home ac adapter
small usb mouse (some have built in card readers and are optical) but only if you can't handle the touchpad or mousekey (who likes that thing anyway?)
or maybe a small trackball instead. Gateway used to make laptops (so did Compaq) with built in trackballs. Those were the days.
A decent case. suggestions I have seen varied from a standard briefcase to a flight bag (it has wheels) to a backpack. go with what fits your budget and your look (nobody on/. mentioned that.)
PDA?
Don't think anybody mentioned that.
Other people did mention WIFI devices.
Make sure your laptop has infrared. also make sure it has USB and/or firewire.
Nobody mentioned a small wireless access point. That could be useful if you don't want to carry around a long network cable.
Also, mentioning cases be sure you plan in advance for how much stuff you are planning on carrying. I never dreamed that I would cram as much stuff in the laptop case as I have.
FWIW,
Kyle
A valid point...
But, somebody once told me, excessive swearing is a sign of a limited vocabulary.
And, as long as there's open source, can anybody really claim to control all of another country's software?
As far as customer service goes, Dell moved a whole bunch of jobs back stateside simply because their customers didn't think the staffing at the Indian call center had a good command of the English language.
Perhaps they swore also?
Ok, I'm not a pissed-off programmer, I'm an overqualified computer support technician. that being said, I think a lot of the other slashdotters who RTFA picked up the pro-Indian bias.
what nobody is mentioning here, is that the poverty rate, and quality of living, etc in India isn't the U.S.A.'s fault.
Some of you guys "in the business" may have worked for headhunters (temp agencies, consulting firms, etc.) And, there modus operandi is that they make money off of you, while you're the one doing all of the hard work.
Imagine the Indian government being a super-sized temp agency that just also happens to have nuclear (or is it nuculear?) arsenal?
Escalating a trade war with India might not be a good thing, but I believe they've fired the opening shot with protectionist policies on their own front.
And something has to be said about a government that would have it's priorities so far out of whack to develop a nuclear arsenal rather than feed it's people.
Maybe we should just be glad India isn't selling nuclear arms to the highest bidder for money instead of outsourcing?
or am I just trollin by myself here?
Seems like my state (IN) seems to favor Techy people from outside of Indiana and not native hoosiers. (These people tend to get the better management level or management pay IT jobs.)
they also happen to be some of the same dorks that's going to scr3w up the Indiana economy (even more so than it already is) by attempting to cram DST down our throats.
that happens, and I'll try moving on to AZ or some other state with more sense than that.
FWIW
I don't think GIMP will be taken sreiously until this major show stopping bug is fixed. Is anybody in Windows using the GIMP able to scan an image directly in the GIMP?
if so, please give me a holler at
davis UNDERSCORE family UNDERSCORE 46168 AT yahoo DOT com (please don't laugh about it being a yahoo address, at least I'm smart enough to not pay for it.)
Thanks, as they do say, in advance.

It's now part of oracle. We'll see how it survives that soon enough here...
