Now... How insecure is this really? And what does it really mean? It's not like the access point has unlimmitted range. I don't even think my nextdoor neighbor could hijack my connection. Should I worry that some dude is gonna park in front of my house and start leeching my connection?
Supposing it was a terrorist or a pedophile? How would you like Homeland Security or the FBI knocking on your door, asking you deep questions and impounding all your computer equipment for investigation? The suspicious activity did all originate from your IP address, after all.
And how secure do you think your computer really is? When it is behind your router it has the advantage of being somewhat obscured to the rest of the world by NAT. A hacker inside your own network just has your software firewall to break down - one step closer. Furthermore, if he is able to get access to your router he probably also has access to everything you send - are you sure you want all that to be logged?
Hydra performed very badly in the recent Freestyle Chess competition run by ChessBase - competitors were a variety of grandmasters and amateurs assisted by databases and computers. I other words, any form of cheating was acceptable, all that mattered were the moves on the board.
The two Hydra machines did not even make it into the final sixteen. Moreover, the eventual winners were a couple of amateurs using pretty ordinary PCs running over-the-counter chess programs. On the way to the title they beat a selection of computer- and supergrandmaster-assisted grandmasters.
On this evidence the "strongest chess entity on the planet" is a team consisting of a New Hampshire database administrator + a soccer coach + 3 ordinary PCs.
1. If Rosetta works as well as demonstrated (Jobs showed unmodified PPC versions of Photoshop+filters and MS Office running happily and fast on the Intel Mac box) then this will be less painful than you think.
2. The way the Intel and PowerPC raodmaps are going I think in three uears time there will be a HUGE difference in capability. Jobs was demoing a Pentium 3.6GHz quad for God's sake!
