Slight clarification is needed here. In the US the president doesn't have the power to sign treaties in a legally binding way with out the approval of Congress. So Congress didn't allow Bush to sign, ie they wouldn't have let Clinton sign or Kerry or FDR

I believe that the opinion of Congress at the time of the Kyoto hearings was that the treaty would cause more harm than good. Generally reducing factory output is bad for the economy and general quality of life, which is a far more immediate and pressing concern.

Yes there is no doubt that Sun is in trouble. Yet they have been very proactive in trying to divert thier own death. Much of thier cash loss is becuase they have been aquiring other companies. 8 of them by my count These things aren't cheap.

And yes there are many companies that start down this path and never pull out, but many do. Apple may be exception but I see many parallels between them, ongoing R&D for example. Expansion of product lines, Ipod and x86 servers for example. The list goes on and i think what works for one may well work for the other.

And here's some speculation ;) As soon as MS made any sign of taking over Sun, McNealy would opensource just about everything, effectivly keeping Java and Solaris around for a very long time and preventing MS from ever killing Java.

There is no evidence that Sun is going to disappear, just becuase it is doing poorly now does not mean its doomed. Just look at Apple.

Microsoft will not buy Sun. What would MS gain by this? A bunch of RISC technology that they don't want to even exist? Some more OSes? Another language? MS has thier product line and has shown no intention of devation. MS's motivations aside - the antitrust courts would never go for it.

As for Solaris being opensoured like Java, well thats just an erroneous statement since Java is not opensourced.

I think that we can be fairly certain that these lasers will get smaller. Even if they don't get smaller they could just stick more on a bigger plane, think C-5 Galaxy. All you need is to have two to have a complete spherical firing range. If these two lasers take up all the space inside the aircraft then they could just mount the bombs on the wings and have a nearly invunerable bomber. You still might have a problem with stealth fighters but not many counties have those, for now anyway.

What is this about housing prices skyrocketing? I can only assume you are refering to rent, since if you are buying a house the price is equal to its value plus interest, if the value is not equal to the price then you have been had. However I have not seen skyrocketing rent either, the apartment I rent is costing me 60% of what it would have cost me in 2000, I live in Denver.

I do agree with you that the companies are being shortsighted though, but for differnt reasons. Here is why and some history backing up my reasoning.

When labor unions first formed industrialist took a big hit since they had to pay thier workers more. Over time those workers spent that extra money there were making on things the indusrialists were making. In the end the industiralist won becuase the workers were doing well finically. The same thing is happening now. The US is the largest market for IT goods, but if we are all unemployed and can't afford these IT goods then the market will evaporate and the IT companies (analagous to the industrialist) will lose thier most important market.
