  1. Just not worth it... on Movies Losing Popularity at Box Office · · Score: 1

If the people from the MPAA would actually pay to watch a movie in a theater they might begin to see how much of a rip-off movies have become. It's bad enough dropping $10 to see a good movie, but most of the movies that are out are not worth the cost of a rental.

  2. Re:What bunk! on RMS says Creative Commons Unacceptable · · Score: 1
Creating artificial scarcity is more or less the economic equal of wholesale destruction of wealth and property.

You obviously have never heard of the diamond industry! They and others do quite well without destroying the economy. Not that I agree with their tactics...

  3. Yeah, but will Disney destroy Pixar? on Steve Jobs to Sell Pixar and Join Disney Board? · · Score: 5, Insightful

Pixar succeeds because they have the freedom to do things differently. I could see Pixar loosing that freedom and falling into the same trap Disney's animation branch did. Unless they could remain somewhat autonomous I can't see them continuing to innovate under Disney's control.

  4. Really on Unpatched Firefox 1.5 Exploit Made Public · · Score: 2, Insightful

Is it just me or is this a pretty worthless report? I can't really see this as being an exploit anyone would care about unless you happen be work for a certain company in Redmond.

Does that mean if I drink a beer and a coffee together that they cancel out? I sense some possibilities here...

  6. Why? on Are three cores better than two? · · Score: 5, Insightful

Why would anyone even want to do this? Most dual proc systems are designed so that the CPUs must be the same for them to work properly. Sure, this configuration is a bit cheaper than using two dual core procs, but unless you have a space CPU sitting around I really don't see the point.

  7. Re:this all getting to be too much on Antispyware Shootout · · Score: 1

The problem is Windows does not easily support this model. IE is susceptible because it is too integrated with the OS. This is one area where Firefox has a big security advantage over IE. The other problem is that most users aren't knowledgeable enough to avoid risky behavior. I can't tell you how many times I have had to clean spyware from my relatives computers because they downloaded something without knowing it.

  8. Speaking of flooding... on Raised Flooring Obsolete or Not? · · Score: 1

Many years ago, we moved into a new building where we were able to build a new computer room. A few months after we moved in, a sewage pipe clogged up and sewage started backing up into the computer room. We had water (or liquid at least) rising up under the raised floors to the point where it was starting to get into the power that was down there. I finally had to shut down the whole computer room to prevent it from going poof.

The maintenance people where able to fix the problem before the water got too high, but we had to have the space under the floors cleaned before we could start up again. That was real fun to explain to the COO.

  9. It's a tool but... on Does Visual Studio Rot the Brain? · · Score: 1

VS was designed for the VB crowd. It allows people to be able to produce results fairly quickly, but it is very easy for inexperienced developers to get in trouble.

At a company that I used to work for, I had to decide on a new technology direction that would allow us to develop web based applications. The developers I had inherited were Access programmers who had no web or OO experience. I'm primarily a Java developer, but given the capabilities of the developers I felt that they would be more productive in the short term with c# and ASP.Net. With some training and a lot of hand holding they were able to start developing web applications and services fairly quickly, probably a lot faster then if we had used Java. A lot of this speed could be attributed to VS and how simple Microsoft makes it to develop applications (albeit simple ones).

The problems came when they had to do something a bit more complex, where they could not rely on VS to help or do it for them. The tool makes it easy to do simple things without understanding what is going on under the hood but many times you really need to have that understanding to be able to accomplish the task or keep yourself out of trouble. Just like in the 90's when power users started using VB and calling themselves programmers, VS lets inexperienced people write programs. They just aren't very good programs and anything too complicated will soon become a big mess.

  10. Is this really a surprise? on The H-1B Swindle · · Score: 1

My first reaction to this article has to be "Duh!". This should not be surprising to anyone who as been in the industry for any length of time. I find it incredible that companies can get away with complaining that they need H-1Bs to fill all of the positions that they have open when there are so many American workers looking for work. What they really mean is that they can't find any CHEAP labor to do the work. That our representatives in congress can't or won't see through this should not be a surprise since they rely on all of the companies that get the H-1Bs for their campaign contributions. Meanwhile, the average American worker gets screwed.
