    Worst case is you get more than one rock. Throw a couple dozen small but well-aimed boulders, destroy Tokyo's train stations, Narita, Haneda and the major highway nodes. Threaten to lob more if you see signs of mass evacuation. You now have 8 million pissed-off, scared but relatively unharmed hostages, whose condition is rapidly deteriorating from hunger and disease. Quite the chip to throw on any bargaining table.

    It's because of the the "Apple rules" school of design, which has as its first tenet "the user doesn't know what he wants and doesn't need choices". Of course, the imitators do not have Apple's capacity to get almost everything right on the first try, so going by it leads to massive un-tweakable suckage.

    On the contrary, we seem to be in violent partial agreement. Given that (as you yourself have stated) catastrophes, war, disease and starvation were never enough to keep the population from growing (albeit slowly) and that nowadays their impact is further dampened by technology, the only practicable way to attain equilibrium is to make fewer new people.

    Good. The faster they wean the slobbering masses off of TV, the better. It's fast getting to the point where not even the dumbest of the dumb will have the patience to watch huge slices of commercials sandwiched between product-placement "shows".
