    In my experience, an overheating cpu will shutdown the machine. 2 of my toshiba behave like this. The solution is to remove the shitty thermal paste they uses and put a better one :-) but, it is inexpensive to try it.

    Maybe the problem is not the OS, but the hardware itself. I bought 1 mainboard and 1 modem, I had a lot of problem with their products. The same with our laptop where I work, always having compatibility and hardware problems. Maybe people understand and never buy a second acer product ?

    I don't agree with you. I already bought an AC unit. When I've seen that the most basic switch was not working (and the water get all over the floor), I asked for a refund and I did not bought another thing from that brand... So you can not say that this guy "rent" that product ...

They will create a certification process and any company will buy this certification, will put a sticker "microsoft genuine made" on the product or service .... I've heard for some canadian government contract, in the service offer the provider must prove they are using legal software. So it is not new.

    I works as an electronic engineer and I have a lot of parts I use for my different projects. When I start a new project, I have to use the same components, where it is necessary to have a database. I already used the phpinventory : http://www.phpwares.com/ And if you need something better, there is openbravo http://www.openbravo.com/ which is a real ERP ( based on Compiere ) which I plan to use for my new company. But as said before by someone else, it takes a lot of time and discipline to maintain such database, but it is very powerfull. If you create pcb, EAGLE ( http://www.cadsoftusa.com/ ) you can use a database when you create BOM and the software populate directly the BOM with the good components, which help you to keep your standard components.

    simple, everybody that don't understand the difference between the address edit zone and the search edit zone. The one that don't understand what is internet and using IE and like it! ( because it is an habit and never tried anything else ).

    I think it's question of being a good corporate citizen. MS receive a lot of federal funds, they should pay what they have to pay. Us, as citizen we have to pay our taxes dans we cannot decide in which state we will pay our taxes and decide in which state they offer the best social advantage ( if any )...

    I have 2 things in mind : 1. how can I miss thing I never used ? 2. if people miss vista features it will be because windows 7 miss those features... So they won't be able to know what the user wants... What a great marketing PR... Microsoft are losing ground!

    I don't think the goal of that project is to teach an OS. Instead it is very good to learn the computer science and to have access to very good tools and software. In my mind, I think that using only one OS is very bad. Try multiple OS and use the one that fit best your needs. For me, linux is my choice.

    The OS is part of the problem. It is so slow even with a very good computer. But regarding the driver, why should the vendors support old hardware? How may microsoft force hardware company to build new driver because microsoft changed totally the internals of the OS?

    Maybe this could be applied to your car's alternator, I don't know.

    I don't think it necessary to use that in a car since in the car we are using DC power not AC power. The AC output frequency does not affect much the bridge circuit to convert the AC to DC.

    For the active directory, it's based on the nds tree of novel. Novel sent some of their engineer to help microsoft with their active directory ... Is it something that we can call innovative?

    Yes, and often when you ask somebody what is their computer (usually, I want to know the processor speed, memory) they tells me: my computer is windows XP, or my computer is windows 98 and he always hang. Moreover, they tells me that their disk drive is a 30mb ... DUH ...

    1st: Windows is not a computer ...
    2nd: It is not the computer that hang, it's the #$%^ windows!!

    160go hard drive don't work under some old computers (PII, 1st or 2nd generation of celeron with old bios).

    The money saving is not the point to gain new user to linux. But, now people like me, who don't want to pay the M$ tax when buying a laptop will have a new option.

    It's good for Dell (they will get new customer) and it's good too for average linux user who want's a linux laptop.

    To gain some new non-geek linux user, we'll have to buy some tv ads ... And a big marketing group... I don't think there is another way to do that!
