Yes, good point. Because of a previous slashdot article, I'm rereading the foundation series of Asimov. At this moment, I'm reading "Foundation and Earth", and there is a lot to do about the importance of earth having a large moon, but some things are unclear to me (from the book):
is a large moon very rare?
is a large moon a prerequisite for biological evolution and intelligent life?
are there other influences of having a moon, apart from the ones mentioned above?
I'd really like to know, so if there are any astronomists out there...
In my opinion it went all wrong with the internet when the corporates discovered it as YACC (yet another commercial channel), somewhere in the second half of the 90ies.
Granted, websites look more flashy and interactive than in the old days, but I have the impression that the content has really deteriorated. All they wanne do nowadays is sell you viagra, city trips, ipods,...
Well, I can only agree and do not see why this is regarded as being a troll, the parent has a valid point, especially since we know that american soldiers are nowadays trained using shoot-em up's. Heck, the american army even releases their own shoot-em up.
Shoot-em ups are fun, if you keep yourself saying they are not for real. They become disgusting and dangerous if they are a replacement and/or training for real life.
I'm afraid I have to agree with the parent here. How much I would like to recommend OOo, it is far too slow for me. Because of compatibility reasons, I often edit the same presentation both in OO's Impress (FC3) and PowerPoint (WinXP), and the difference in speed is remarkable e.g. during a slide show, especially when you work with large images. And I have the same impression with Writer and Calc.
Sadly, but true. Does anyone have a simple explanation for this?
A classical "don't shoot the pianist" comes to my mind.
First, I'm not claiming that people are starving in the streets of your oh so lovely US of A. I'm just quoting a study of your ministry of agriculture. Ask them how they define "not enough food".
Second, the news message reminded me of other things, namely that the rift between the haves and have nots in the Western countries (yes also Belgium) is getting bigger and bigger, and that one day, this will pose problems.
Maybe it is already so, since the infamous gap between politicians and civilians might be a modern form of revolt. In a lot of countries here in Europe, but also in the US, people tend either not to vote or vote for an extremist and/or populist party. Hey, the rejection of the EU constitution was mainly driven by anti-politics.
Considering the majority of Americans are categorized as "overweight" or "obese", please define "not enough food".
Well... this irony was also spotted in the radio news. I'll give you a shortened translation of the VRT news website: "11.2% of the american families do not have enough food,...36 million, of which 13.3 million children, especially from latin and black families. Pediatrics do also see more children, younger than 1 year, underfed (?)...
Often, when children have enough food in those poorer communities, it is very one-sided, since it is often impossible to find fruit or vegetables, even canned.
In 4 years time, this number has risen with 5.2 million. Bush has announced that for 2006 further cuts in social programs are planned.."
Mind you, the VRT is our public news source that likes to bring news from the USA that puts Bush in a bad light. They site official numbers of the ministry of agriculture though.
Well, then things are going to happen sooner rather than later, as it was on the news today (well, at least here in Belgium) that 36 million americans live in a family where there is not enough food.
"Something is true untill the opposite is proven" and "scepticism and doubt drive science" are the two fundamental laws in science. So you are on the right track.
Mind you, maybe you shouldn't lose your energy on problems that were solved 50 years ago;-) (although, didn't hawkins review his black hole theory recently, a theory that was, what..., 40 years old?)
Nice to respond to an intercalating drug (or was it a groove binder).
I agree with your statements, except for one thing, that nmr is closer to the in vivo reality than xray. Recent beliefs are that if you calculate the content of a cell and compare it to its volume, you end up much more with a xray like environment than a nmr like one: proteins, dna and the others are so packed that you cannot compare it with solute/solvent models: a cell should really be compared to a Japanese metro, not to the nevada desert
In fact, 4 stranded DNA exists, it is crystallized, we know the structures and it is feasible if you use the long edges of the purine bases. Check out

Yeah, but business monkeys (finally) caught up with the techies. I think the curtains have fallen (at last). It's just a matter of time before they reach their 2$ level again (just my 2 cents). More important, every time they announce a new lawsuit, the stock drops even more, instead of rising as in the previous months. They even have to buy their own stock back, a well known mechanism to superficially elevate stock value.
Meanwhile, I still think that the top of sco earned a lot of money with their maneuvres. I'm no stock wizard, but I know you can even make money on a falling stock...

Well, just the 0.02 cents of a 30something

Can' wait for the effect on the stock. Sadly, it's after the closing of the markets (wonder why that is :-) )

But I did not say that nmr is useless though :-)
Does it have a function, it surely does, check out this site if you're really interested
next year you will see that "SCO is the owner of all 64-bit operating systems and a leading provider of 64bit-based solutions"
Except that they don't have any real business anymore, so they're bound to be at the wrong side of the curve: byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Maybe a good one for the next ask slashdot or slashdot poll
puhleezz is spelled erroneously
