    mine just peeled off - i have an r50. on mine it's the same type of sticker as the pentium stickers.

    agreed - there is something that just feels good about peeling off that windows sticker after you've finished your fresh [linux] install. all that's left to do then is sit back and admire the thinkpad's sheer beauty.

    of course you then briefly remember the hours of pain and misery it took to complete the install but then you ignore that and bask in it's beauty again.

    usually it's used in relation to buying laptops - it's impossible (except for the few linux pre-installs there have been) to buy a laptop without XP pre-installed, and that is included in the price. that's one of the reasons that so many people set up dual boot systems on laptops.

    it's a long time since i've been to the netsol site and my initial reaction after trying this new web whois search is that they are a disgrace.

    my search on my own domain returned links to "snap up" the domain when it expires, "make an offer" on the domain, register the same domain with other extensions (forcing me to now consider buying the other domains if i want to stop that happening).

    and as if those tactics aren't low enough, they also have sitefinder.

    oh and did i mention my email is printed without any spam protection on the results page?

    they may or may not include their own site's data but that would account for only a small percentage of the overall data they are basing these numbers on. this is because they would have relatively small traffic compared to some of their (huge) clients and also the fact that they have a large number of clients.

    and of course it mustn't be forgotten that this swing has occurred without the marketing power of a giant like MS, and without having it bundled in windows (which of course is the OS the majority of users use).

    So it only measures visitors to sites that have specifically installed the software. It would not be unreasonable to suggest that those sites that would install such software tend to be more computer oriented and thus visited by more tech savvy visitors, people pre-disposed to have an alternative browser. That may not be the case of course, but in no way is this a true random sample of websurfers.

    as someone who works for another major web analytics provider i can tell you that they would in fact have a wide variety of clients, so their numbers would not be slanted toward tech sites.

    IMHO their stats would actually be one of the best indicators of a market trend it would be possible to get.

    that's very true as well.

    sure it doesn't take you long to install a new system, but i'm usually tweaking things for days/weeks after a fresh install.

    understandable, and no i'm sure you're not.

    but really, if you find these problems with fedora then the answer (at least for mean time) is simply to install a different distro instead.

    i very much doubt you would have any significant issues installing mandrake 10 community/official for example.

    i find the opposite - firefox renders very noticably faster than ie.

    i agree safari is very quick though, probably is faster than firefox, and opera is definitely faster - that's the fastest i've seen.

    however, firefox is by a mile my favourite browser and i wouldn't consider switching and sacrificing all the other firefox features just for a slight speed increase.

    best overall browser in my opinion.

    hmmm depends. personally i usually wouldn't be handing my cc number to a company that won't pay for it's own cert and is using a shared hosting one, unless i already knew they were ok beforehand.

    yeah the flash one you can normally copy over but i've found the best way with extensions usually is to re-install.

    not sure what you mean by "didn't support adblock by default". I installed adblock as an extension on .9 fine..

    the family suing is evil to me.

    i work for a US public company and they are certainly not what i'd call evil.

    that's right - there's no way i'd use it if it wasn't called google. their success is clearly nothing to do with their revolutionary search methodology and everything to do with them deriving their name from another word.

    yes that's true. i used to verify/authorize every purchase with the bank by phone, you have to for online sales.

    then also, for any customer addresses that weren't familiar to me like overseas addresses, i used to check that the addresses were legitimate, eg; check that the postcode is correct for the city. i found that in many bogus orders, things like this would be incorrect (when i was doing this, address verification or security numbers weren't introduced yet).

    if i still had any doubts, i used to actually call the customer and confirm their order.

    sounds like a lot of trouble but bogus orders were rare in my experience so it never became an issue. guess it just depends on the business etc.

    what about simply getting a merchant account?

    surely it would be worth it with a 50,000 member site, even if the individual sales were only relatively small amounts.

    i used to accept credit cards inhouse for a subscription type online business and at the time i introduced that i only had about 25 customers.

    after the initial setup costs (which were reasonable anyway), a merchant account offered a far better deal than that offered by people like paypal and this way you are in control.

    and re; passwords etc; the point is you process inhouse, so all they are entering is their credit card details. there are no new passwords etc to remember. personally, i prefer that method of online sale any day to something like paypal.

    i would talk to your bank, it may not be as expensive as you think.

    oh there's a few different directories. the problem is getting to the directories in the first place!!

    and as for trying to download music files on it.. if anything could convince people to buy music, that could!
