While I accept that I'm not a social person and thus have little use for social networks. My biggest beef with it is the matter of centralisation and control.
No matter how much they insist that you are in control of your privacy, Google/Facebook are ultimately in control, your information is their for use or abuse as they, their business partners, their disgruntled employees, lulsec intruders, unsanctioned and sanctioned government officer and divorce or SLAPP lawyers see fit.
Basically Canonical is asking for about the same rights the FSF ask for, but nobody ever questions the FSF because they have an irreproachable reputation. As the makes of Ubuntu, Canonical should have gotten such level of trust and while there are true ubuntu believers, the fact that enough people distrust it to the point that it is even an issue is just... sad. Everything just because of Canonicals recent misbehaving and general better than thou attitude they have gotten out of late...
I see arguments like those all the time and while they might be right, they might as well be wrong.
Yes, killing the used game market sale means some people would happily buy the game won' at first. But being left out feels like shit and some would buy it anyway.

So killing the used game market might or might not negatively affect the bottom line. It is an open question that calls for professionally conducted analysis. Given that Sony probably spends more on marketing than in actually making good games. It's very probable that they have figured out that subverting the law, voiding the first sale doctrine, trampling over peoples rights, pissing everybody and being general ass-holes all around might just be the most lucrative option.
So I don't think it is so much a problem of them not being market smart as much as it's a problem of them being greedy pigs.
A solution should would be to make a player's guild or union of sorts. Just like entities like the MPAA unabashedly exists solely to promote the interest of international media conglomerates.

Now, do I think there is a problem with too much escapism holding back society? I doubt it. The main source of escapism has always been religion, not TV. Religion was stronger in the past than now and that didn't hold back social progress (well it did but not enough).
The issue is too complex to discuss but the the problem of apathy is people have an easy life already and don't see much gain in engaging a problem that is hard to understand. Essentially people are powerless.
Look at the problem of large companies like Google deciding they aren't going to pay taxes. Since they are such an important source of jobs, they get away with it. Meanwhile Google gets the benefits of a stable country and police protection of private property.
Since they aren't paying taxes it means that people and companies around them end up paying for Google, so that Google has basically made them their serfs and them their masters. It's a return to feudal society, and Google can get away it because it's not just wealthy, its powerful.
No single person has the economic power to tack on Google by market tactics. Violent measures against corporations, or the government are just as ineffective. The government is so not threatened by common people that they don't even have to kill a soul to suppress large masses of protesters.
The only recourse for the common man is the political road. And let's just say that politics is a dirty game. Look at Assange for example, all he did was embarrass the American government and now he is being harassed by phony rape allegations and has had his reputations smeared all over the world.
Any person trying the herculean task of rallying the entire country against corporate tax evasion would be at best ineffectual and at worst destroyed.
So I don't think it is really a problem of boys playing too much MW2.

I think the problem is the stigma we associate to gender preferences and the way we cope with it.
Women love for fashion is seen as shallow and wasteful, as is men love for sex, sports and violence. Both genders react by pointing out exceptions, which is okay since exceptions do exist and need to be pointed out, but men also cope by calling critics prude and spoilsports; a line of defense I've never seen used to defend fashion games.
In addition, women who love the kitchen are seen as perpetuating the subjugation of all women, which is taken as treason, an accusation unknown to most men, fans of Duke Nukem not withstanding.
In all fairness, software is only as secure as the culture behind it. Everybody using PHP knew of this bug for ages, just, nobody gave a damn. Except those who didn't know that also didn't give a damn.
PHP has never been crazy about security, what else do you expect from a runtime that once let you insert arbitrary variables into the script namespace?
The few people using PHP who care about security that much are using DIY password management anyway.
