Exactly what can be taught on a laptop that they can't learn through traditional means? graphic design? leet programming skillz? I'm sure it could one day be made useful on some level, but if humanity in general hasn't managed to significantly alleviate poverty and massive death tolls by disease or simple hunger, what chance do these laptops have of ever making a difference?

Terrorism is performing acts designed to instill fear in a population in order to get that population to bow to the demands of the "terrorists"
ie. It is better to do what they want than to live with such fear.

The september 11 hijackers don't really fit this mold. What exactly are their demands? Is it for the US to stop interfering with their countries? Are their aims simply to convert the world to islam by force? I dont know, or really care what their aims are, but while the small amount of moderately powerful attacks have instilled fear in a small subset of the population of the US, britain and others, its far from the widespread fear a terrorist would hope to generate. I think most of these attacks, (of course they aren't all directly controlled by one organization) are really done with the simple aim of two things.

    1. Demonstrate that as powerful as these countries may be, they are not invulnerable.
    2. Because of point one, draw the attention that has been lacking for many many years to the things these powerful governments have been doing to other countries, in the name of protecting the priveledges of their relatively wealthy population.

They have already succeeded in both these aims. but the message hasn't got through, and never will.

Don't attack me personally as a sympathizer because I really couldn't give a shit either way

I of course do not advocate banning any site. creating a new TLD does not make it any easier to filter anything though. It looks good on paper for politicians and people who do not understand how the web functions. unfortunately the only way to control what children see on the web is with a whitelist you create yourself. It needs to be said, there is not a massive amount of reasons for children to use the web. using IM to talk to friends constantly is apparently very important. research for school. well seeing as the web has conflicting information anywhere and very little of it is able to be quoted as a research source in higher education it mostly seems as just a good reason for a kid to tell their computer illiterate parents.

i have no such aversion to sexual imagery, although i sure as heck wouldn't want to be explaining to my fictional ten year old daughter why that man is shoving a baseball bat up that ladies ass while choking her with his penis. which is a perfectly legal act you don't have to look particularly hard to find. And i stand by my original comment that a child is not going to even read a neo nazi website unless they have been exposed to it elsewhere already. How about sex with animals? dont have to look too hard to find that either. whats your daughter more likely to get ideas from? nazis or images of dogs licking vagina? Your assumption that i have an aversion to sexual images and a lack of concern for hate speech makes me suspect that you are stupid. Its simply that sexual imagery that is completely legal (and illegal) can also be damaging to a childs' perception of normal human sexuality that could potentially see them be injured, or various other scenarios. Young teenagers are horny long before they reach legal age, and they are not likely to discuss much about sex with their parents. On the other hand a child going to a hate speech site and reading it in its entirety and being influenced by it is unlikely. And if they were actually influenced, after going there and reading it all when they had no outside influence to cause them to look at it in the first place(likely?) then it is far more likely for their parents to notice them saying they hate people for various stupid reasons than their parents to know that their 13 year old daughter is sucking dick? So no am not particularly worried about hate speech sites affecting anyone who already doesn't have that in their environment. Sex sites on the other hand are something children are much more likely to be curious about, ( i have first hand knowledge of several teachers all of whose classes are constantly pulling up inappropriate images, and in a non-surprising twist are known to be promiscuous. have heard no tales of swastikas yet). I'm not saying i like hate sites, more that they really only pander to those already that way inclined or influenced. sex sites on the other hand are attractive to all who are not prudes. nothing wrong with most of the stuff out there besides the violation of innocents yada yada, but that doesn't mean it isn't in some cases harmful especially for the inexperienced.

"so why exactly do i want to pay $1 for a song that isn't even in full quality," because I only want that 1 song. As far a quality goes, I listen to that music on the road, so background noise is a far bigger hit to the quality. Now, If I was sitting in a room with no background noise at all, listening to a pair of 500 dollar speaker, and had never heard anything over 90 db in my life, than yeah, I might notice a difference. umm you for some reason didnt mention the DRM part.... also you only listen to that music on the road right? i guess you have a completly different taste in music when you sit in your loungeroom listening to your stereo. 500 dollar speaker? I'm no audiophile but I can tell, nay FEEL, the difference between compressed audio, and CD audio with a stereo no better than the average joe. BTW it must be nice to be one of the blissfully ignorant masses who consumes music like cans of softdrink. "that i can burn to as many damn cds as i want i'll pass." Never been a problem with me and itunes. But if it was, I could use different cd writing software. "Apple reserves the right to change at any time what you can do with the music you purchase at the iTunes Music Store." Never been a problem yet. And if indeed you are able to get around this by using different cd writing software, do you not see that for what it is? using another software to violate their terms is undoubtably illegal in the US, sort of negates the whole purpose of paying for a song dont you think? "umm maybe i dont spend enough time with my tv remote or something, but it took me a few minutes to figure out how to even use the scroll wheel on my brain dead little sisters ipod mini," ummm... maybe you are the one that's brain dead. ummm... maybe you should have continued to evolve your insults past elementary school. It of course is not intuitive, nothing similar ever existed before it. It looks like it should work like the joystick on a sega master system, there are no indications of the scrolling action required. I guess its ok for the little geek who drooled and watched his friend use it for a few hours in the playground. "Of course every moron i know" birds of a feather, eh? what exactly does that mean? Are you somehow incredibly fortunate that the only people you know are the same as yourself? If so then this is probably because you are one of the 90% of the human population who is indeed a moron. "i gladly inform them that ipod is a brand not a device category, and that ipods suck and lock you in to doing all sorts of crap that is totally unneeded." man, you must be ajoy to tlak to. so, do they get the same tired speach when the ask for a kleenix? People know it's a brand, but people idenitfy with brands. Perhaps you should consider just saying "no, its a T10, and i like it better then the iPod for these reasons..." Actually no I don't think many people do find me a joy to speak to. The ones that do are the few people whose eyes don't glaze over at the sound of a conversation that isn't sport or celebrity hijinks. unfortunately these people are few and far between. Actually that is why I walk around constantly with my mp3 player in my ears to try to discourage these other people from even speaking to me. Unfortunatly for me, I have a reputation for actually knowing stuff that people often want explained to them with a minimum of detail. ie. "my son wants an ipod, what should I get and where can I get it cheapest?" Of course as soon as I ask the intended usage of the "ipod" the eye-glazy thing starts again. They just want someone to tell them what to do. Oh and by the way of the thirty odd people who have asked my advice on "ipods" none of them knew it was a brand, not the actual type of device it is.
