  1. Hey idiot grandson, did you learn your lesson? on Firefighters Let House Burn Because Owner Didn't Pay Fee · · Score: 5, Interesting

I've seen a lot on here about the unconscionable conduct of the fire department (and yes, they were douche-nozzles about the whole thing). What I haven't seen is commentary on why this guy's idiot grandson was burning rubbish in the first place. Use legitimate solid-waste disposal (landfill or, better yet, recycling) but don't burn the stuff! Not only can it cause property destruction, but it's also a health hazard if plastics are being burned and people happen to inhale the noxious fumes. Too bad this poor guy had to lose his home because his grandson is a fucktard.

  6. Recycle mobo/CPU, keep the rest on What To Do With an Old G5 Tower? · · Score: 1

I would recycle the motherboard/CPU (with a legitimate company) and be done with it. You'd get a much better performance/watt ratio with a more modern box. Keep the case, RAM (depending on specs; otherwise, recycle), and drives and get a newer mobo/CPU combo. If the HDD is smallish, you can put the OS/apps on it and get another drive for data.

I can see this working for a graphics chip -- after all, who cares if a tiny portion of an image is a pixel or two off? For execution of an actual application, however, I think this idea sucks. There are far better ways to reduce power consumption, like asynchronous- or reversible computing techniques.

CNN has more to gain from this than CBS. I've completely stopped watching CNN because it's become nothing more than a 24hr version of Entertainment Tonight, with its constant coverage of goings-on in the celebrity world. No it isn't. These shows were broadcast, which is a form of publication. Notice that the definition of the word publication is 'the act of making something public' - Abraham Lincoln's journals were private, which is the antonym of public. So you're comparing apples and oranges.

Well, yeah. I want higher gas taxes -- and correspondingly lower general taxes. We're saying that the roads are paid for by the users, except they're not, so that would be the way to correct that.

The problem with a petrol tax is that as auto makers increase fuel economy across their product lines, that source of revenue will diminish with time. A better alternative would be a combination of congestion pricing and miles-travelled metering, which would be directly proportional to actual road usage.
