clicked throught the first page of results...no evidence of 1x2m enclosed spaces for cows. Actually, the search results produce little evidence of any bovine brutality outside of feeling bad for milk cows due to the continuous milk production cycle (not saying it doesn't happen...just surprised your search did not produce any results on the first page). Like I said...it doesn't make sense, economic or otherwise, to "store" a cow in a 1x2m space.
Also, after thinking about it, I can't think that this is any worse than making them stand shoulder to shoulder, knee deep in their own shit in the high density feed lot while they're finished off with corn before processing. The cows might actually prefer this to the high density feed lot.
Actually, our 100 head of dairy cattle voluntarily packed themselves into the holding pin in shin-deep manure twice a day as they waited to get milked. I never once saw a cow just walk 8hrs non stop. They may accumulate 8hrs of movement over 24hrs but that's more wandering and eating than the continuous walking that a treadmill would require.
Now, adding human peddle powered generaters in each workers cube...there's an idea.
"1x2m enclosed space" I've never heard or seen this. The beef that we raised wouldn't even fit in that space. Do you have any proof that this is a common beef producing practice? The only time our cattle were in a space that small was for the brief time they entered the milking station...and that's dairy cattle which are typically more narrow, not beef. Now, feed lots...that's a different story but I've still never seen a feed lot with 1x2m enclosed spaces...it doesn't even make economic sense to build all those individual "cages" for beef production. (possibly Kobe beef?? but its production is not representative of the livestock industry in the U.S. that I am familiar with).
I couldn't get though the parent post without imagining a self-important university type. "I now smoke a pipe while drinking congnac with my professor and philosophy student friends and now I smoke weed" Berkley? is that you?
This second hand smoke is making me dumb.
Um, "lung cancer no" - what you smok'n
Ok, one thing that always bothers me about these electric cars is the seeming ignorance surrounding the simple notion of how to provide climate comfort within the cabin. How far will the electric car go in the winter time in Minnesota with the now electric heater running...or the air conditioner during the hot summer? Are these calculations taken into account when providing "MPG" ratings? Heat is somewhat trivial for internal combustion engines but obviously not for electric...
What if I don't give a crap if someone listens to my voicemail? Why annoy me with all of those steps? It's my choice to not update my pin code. Why does every fricken thing need a nanny?
Ok, when you live in a smaller town with a local newspaper (think population below 10k people) the one thing they like to fill the pages with is local and county police reports. In there you find SIGNIFICANT numbers of traffic stops and arrests involving people driving high on marijuana. Now, if it's happening at that rate in a small town then what do you think is happening in the big cities?
BTW - there are plenty of campaigns that cover driving while intoxicated on alcohol and drugs. The term DUI is not exclusive to alcohol.
Agreed with one correction - public transportation is NOT run as a business...at least not a profitable or even a break even one. Are there any that are not subsidized? I think we already burn enough tax money on poorly run PTA's because they are NOT run as a business but like another welfare program.
WTF!? is up with Slashdot... aren't there enough political biased based sites out there for people to visit? Why can't we get back to discussing nerd stuff and cut the political slant shit!!
We had one of the first wave of store closings here back in December. The "going out of business" "20-50% off", etc prices were still higher than the BB across the street. I even visited the store on the very last day where even the fixtures were on sale and everything was STILL over priced, even the fixtures....and why would I buy a $2k+ TV, laptop, etc from a store that wouldn't even be there the next day?
Do yourself a favor and avoid the temptation to join the crowds of bargain hunters who think they are getting a good deal just because the tag says "30% off". What ever you're looking for will still be cheaper online or at Best Buy, Office Max, Fry's...
Circuit City...overpriced and useless to the very end.
"1996 -- Congress passed Telecommunications Act of 1996 which established December 31, 2006, as the end of the transition to a new ATSC digital television standard. On that date authority to broadcast via the old NTSC analog standard would end."
"November 1, 2005 -- The Senate and the House of Representatives each pass their own version of a new digital TV transition bill. The House version would end the transition on December 31, 2008, and the Senate version would set that date as April 7, 2009. Each would have a subsidy for digital-to-analog set-top-boxes. "
also...
"February 8, 2006 -- Digital TV Transition Act of 2005 signed into law, establishing February 17, 2009 as the last day for NTSC/analog TV broadcasts. "
...whereas a liberal checks if they are lost, ill, or some other socially acceptable reason, and only shoots when they are proved to be aggressors.
Actually, the US, a liberal will determine that since you were driving a new SUV that you must not care about the environment or poor people or education or world peace or health care or racism or women's rights, etc, etc. The liberal will take down your license plate number, find out were you live, create a community activist organization that promotes the above listed ideals while ensuring that you are associated with being against the ideals without ever considering facts. The liberal will encourage the passage of repressive laws that result in more government regulations to ensure that you never have a chance to get lost in your SUV because the law won't allow it.
Say's Obama to Joe the plumber "I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody."...that's a liberal... if you earn it the government will spread it...as in bend over and spread.
Ok, your "fix" is a lofty, if not impossible goal. What can the average voter use to "understand his underlying value system" outside of his reported actions and his slick website that most likely was not soley produced by him? Even if you had a chance to sit down with him for a one on one I doubt you could uncover his true underlying value system. I have had friends for years that I still don't have a complete understanding of their viewpoints.
The problem with a politician changing his mind, especially a relatively inexperienced politician, is that few people will be able to understand what he truly believes in. What if you previously supported Obama because of his stance on NASA and now that it's changed, what do you do. Should people that agree with his new stance be at all concerned about his previous stance? Maybe he'll come into some more "new" information that will have him change his stance again. How can people rally around someone that they trust to have their viewpoint when that person's viewpoint continues to change?
"Change we can believe in" is certainly holding true for Obama...who knew that he was actually referring to his mind?
MJ: What if we had adopted range voting in 2000 or 2004?
WP: It's pretty clear Gore would have won Florida and New Hampshire, so Gore would have been the president. Bush's victory over Kerry in most of the states was less than the Nader effect, so you still would have had a Bush victory.
As I was reading the article and I read the comment about the 1912 election and I thought to myself, "why not use the more recent spoiler election of 1992?." Well I got my answer later in the article with the whole crux being the still crying idiots who think Bush stole the 2000 election from Gore. Well maybe the memory has slipped a little for the libs here in the US but there wouldn't be a Bill Clinton/ Al Gore without the spoiler election of 1992. Let me refresh a little. Bill Clinton only pulled about 42 percent of the US popular vote. The rest went to George Bush 1 and a third party candidate named Ross Perot (yes, that's right, there are more than two parties here in the US). Ross Perot clearly pulled more votes from Bush 1 than Clinton and way more votes than Ralph Nader will ever get. Without Ross Perot, Bush clearly would have had a second term.
Come on people...the national "vote" in the US that gets reported around the world as a democratic vote is not entirely that. The States elect the President. If you want to parse the US national voting system then you have to understand that the plurality vote only occurs when the electorate casts the vote and not when the citizens of the US cast their vote. The citizen vote is only used to influence the citizen's state electorate. The electorate can then choose to vote with the will of the people in their state or not. Each state is assigned a number of electorates based on the population of that state. The states choose how and who are allowed to vote in the national and local elections. If the electorate (State representative) system is to be changed in the US then 2/3 of the US states would have to agree to an amendment to the US Constitution (not likely in my lifetime). Remember, the US is made up of 50 individual States...think Europe if all of Europe were to decide to have an over arching federal government with its own president.
The best way for people to change government in the US is to pay more attention to local elections. All politics are local. Stop allowing terrible candidates at the local level and you will slowly remove the knuckleheads at the national level.
"I don't think my country, the UK is any better. We have airports patrolled by armed police; yet they're rarely seen at railway stations and never at bus stations. I guess armed police help to keep the populace in a state of fear which may very well be what our two governments want"
I recently flew into Gatwick from the US. When I saw the police patroling the airport with machine guns and body armor I said "hell yeah...that's what we need in the US." I didn't find myself in a state of fear...I'll save my fear for when I actually do something wrong...like wearing clothing that makes me look like I'm about to commit a crime.
I think the article makes quite a leap in judgment from the results to the conclusion. An undisclosed number of college students who identify themselves as "liberal" or "conservative" (whatever that means) took a hand-eye coordination test and the "liberals" won....somehow that means that George Bush is single minded and John Kerry, who had lower college grades than GWB, has a more intelligent and agile mind!? WTF!? I think the real morons are the people are providing the ridiculous analysis.
So, what was the breakout of gamers to non-gamers? Perhaps "conservative" students spend more time on school work while "liberals" spend more time playing games.
I've entered fucking retardville....a moronic post with moron scoring. What grand 'ol state are you living in? I'll take my shitty red state over whatever small minded, crap hole, socialist feed bag you live in.
btw...to the Al Gore posters...Al Gore is just another profiteering oil man. His old money is from oil and his new money will be from his "carbon offset" shell game. You get nothing new with Al Gwhore.
IT gadgets are ultimately not that important in the overall pursuit of happiness. What's the point of keeping up with all of the IT gadgets if all it ever does is give you a constant chore of learning the next new (questionably useless) thing? The general public is not interested in being under a constant challenge to keep up with gadgets that have little affect on their personal lives. Most people don't need a PDA, or a GPS, or a video iPod. The happiest people I know have limited to no access to IT gadgets outside of cell phones. The most stressed and unhappy (add broke and unhealthy) people I know are the ones that are constantly trying to keep up with the latest in technology. A TV is easy...if you're not making a living in IT you just don't need all of the gadgets.
Maybe you can site specific examples as proof...otherwise your comments are FUD.

The plans started in 1996 and it was the House and the Senate that created the converter box subsidy program...not the "Bush admin controlled FCC..."

If I'm going to get FLAIMBAIT then I'm going to earn it...
