So...let me get this straight. The current and a former president of Russia are begging a US businessman to stop the persecution of one of their citizens...what's wrong with this picture!? Of course, in a typical and predictable fashion, slashdot posters latch on to the tired old "bash Microsoft and Bill Gates" instead of questioning why a country's leaders would have to beg a US businessman to stop enforcement of a Russian law.
What are you ashamed of? That everyone can get medical treatment for at least serious issues? That people who are not even citizens of this country can get free medical treatment for a minor cold by entering any emergency room?
What exactly are YOU doing?
Before you spout something ridiculous, I have personally witnessed the free services, both from the recent three hours spent in an emergency room waiting room in CA and by my idiot brother who carried absolutely no insurance spending two weeks in traction at a hospital after wrecking his murdercycle.
No one goes without basic medical attention in the US and there is nothing to be ashamed about in that. If you disagree, prove it with a factual case...I don't know of any.
To all the people making snide remarks about feeding their people first, skip your lattes and such and donate yourself. Why ask others to do what you will not?
Wait! Why assume that being without an X-Box, internet, transfats, high fructose corn syrup, TV, a "high" paying job (etc, etc) makes your life poor? I hate this idea of impressing our own beliefs on others...its just ridiculous and self serving.
I grew up on a farm where my family would have easily been considered poor by city folk standards. I now work in software development where I make a ton of money, can go on vacation anywhere in the world, own two houses, new cars, can buy all of the latest anything I want and all the food to go with it. So what does that bring me? Stress, poor health, no time to enjoy my loot, always under attack by those who think I have too much (like I didn't earn it or something)...and the biggest kicker...I daydream daily about being back on the farm and "poor." Life was so much more rewarding when I was "poor." The happiest people I know are "poor".
The moral of the story is "cram that latte up you're a$$ before you even think about imposing your "better" lifestyle". Let the Indians all enjoy a great accomplishment that will no doubt transcend all.
They didn't blame Microsoft for their failure to stop the iPods from shipping, but there is a certain element to truth to the statement. If you take away the fact that Apple is involved and look at it--a technology product was infected with malware because a Windows PC on the production line was infected and it wasn't caught in time.
Here's an idea. Why can't Apple take a different look and say "hmmm...maybe we should have made our OS more accessible and available on cheaper hardware so that our contract factories could afford to use them."
The real fact of the matter is that Slashdot is getting further away from "news for nerds" and a lot closer to "FUD that doesn't matter." It's evident once again by the fact that this discussion has moved to US/Bush bashing instead of focusing on the technology or the fact that this is a world problem.
If governments were really serious about airport security, they would adapt a model similar to the one used in Israel. Roving groups of heavily armed, well trained commandos that stop "interesting" individuals and select them for additional screening. However, this method would be too inconvenient and intrusive for travelers (Americans).
How is this more "serious"? Are you saying that Israel does no other "ridiculous" screening; only relying on commandos to find "interesting" individuals? Don't they have this kind of security in London and didn't the "commandos" recently take down a scared tourist (I have my doubts about how innocent the guy was myself but that's not the point).
I agree that our airport security is far from bullet proof. I fly almost every week and the best thing that I can say about TSA is that they keep knuckleheads from bringing too much carry-on. You definitely cannot count on the airlines to properly control the size and amount of crap people try to carry on. But let me tell you, NO ONE WILL EVER SUCCESSFULLY HIJACK A PLANE IN THE US...I can guarantee you that. They may find a way to blow one up but they will never take control of a plane...Flight 93 set the tone for a country full of martyrs...my blood is boiling just thinking about it. "Let's roll!"
RFID...too much too soon. Let Wal-Mart flush this one out. Passports are like drivers license; they're only for people who don't break the law. Adding RFID just adds an insult to the penalty card.

The current polarized glasses in use for Chicken Little 3D have little more affect on looking around the room than a pair of sunglasses. Good active LCD polarized glasses will have the same affect when not processing. Focus has already been addressed...just go see Chicken Little 3D.
Man, I tell you, this is my second post on this subject and I can't believe how ill informed/. readers have been on this subject. Just go see CL-3D....forget the story, just check out the technology. It'll be worth it.
First off the article makes it sound like IBM invented this when in fact all they have "invented" is a consumer way to utilize the real invention, DLP. Texas Instruments tied their Digital Micromirror Devices to two DLP processors quite a while back for the purpose of faster image processing, which would include 3D.
Christie Digital (3-chip DLP Cinema projector with the dual source inputs necessary), Dobly (media server), Disney (content creation) and RealD (active LCD panel and media processor) have already implemented this technology and you can view it for yourself if you go to see Chicken Little 3D. You are still required to wear a pair of cheap, lightweight polarized glasses but the active polarization portion of the image is being handled by an LCD panel placed in front of the projected image. IBM's version is placing the active polarization in the glasses, thereby creating a much more expensive pair of glasses (ok for home use, not practical for cinema).
Anyway, considering Disney's huge investment in outfitting theatres with 3D projection technology and the demonstration earlier this year at Showest of Star War's, Top Gun, and a few others in 3D, I think it's only a matter of time before we see more available 3D content. IBM's "invention" will be a good thing for consumers but it's certainly not the first implementation of this technology.
oh, btw...the key is DLP's ability to produce the 144fps needed by using dual processors but don't expect to see this in an LCD TV no matter what kind of video processing you put behind it. The crystals just cannot move fast enough.
Companies providing bundled services need to step lightly on this subject. Selling me 'Internet' access, blocking VOIP transit, and offering a comparable VOIP service (for a fee, of course), is asking for trouble.
My outbound port 25 is already blocked and I'm forced to use the "free" mail servers instead of my own mail servers with my host provider. They implemented this without pre-notice. People complained, nothing changed, and SBC is still happily selling a service that sounds like your getting the "whole internet".
They get past the "bait" laws with the fine print that few people read before making a purchase, including the end user license agreement that'll likely piss you off if you read all of it. I doubt these large companies would allow something as obvious as a bait law slip through legal. The only repercussion that SBC will likely need to consider is whether their customer base will accept this type of treatment or not; it's not likely that enough people will understand what they are missing or being denied to make a difference (I hope I'm wrong).
regarding open formats: in the end, there's relatively little difference between an open and a closed format on a twenty-year timeline, from the perspective of the 98% group. Either way, they're not going to be the ones designing the conversion tool. If it's an open format, they have to hope that enough geeky guys with free time find it an interesting or relevant enough problem to solve. If it's a closed format, they have to hope that the company's still in business and updating its tools, or that it released something before it went belly-up, or that it opened its file formats, or that its developers are good samaritans. And here's the kicker: the 98% group does not know which of these alternatives is more likely to be the case. They probably don't realize the problem exists. It's not because they're stupid or willfully ignorant, because once again they only see the computer as a tool. You might as well call them stupid or willfully ignorant for not knowing what machine screws are used to hold their washing machine together.
stupid is relative...bring your C++, XML, and open source down to the farm (you know, the place where your food comes from) and see how far that'll take you.
Back when Microsoft was being pursued by the government my grandpa came up to me with the local newspaper and said "Who's this Microsoft and why is the government after them?". My grandpa never touched a computer, VCR, MP3 player, DVD, cell phone (he once accidentally hit the OnStar button in his truck and couldn't figure out where the voices were coming from) or even a tape player. He did however run a very successful 1000 acre farm and dairy and he lived a very long and happy life. He was 85 when he died a couple months ago and I still could never explain what I do beyond "I work with computers".
I'd give up all of this technology to live the life my grandpa had (as I build my second home file server/media pc). stupid is relative
heres a nice link that discusses the ShoWest event and even states Lucas is planning to release the entire Star Wars saga in 3D for the 30th anniversary in 2007
http://www.worldenteractive.com/lucas.htm
Lucas and Cameron (ILM) have already previewed some of it at ShoWest several months ago (several minutes of the original Star Wars...they also showed several minutes of Top Gun). The 3D was displayed on a Christie 3 chip DLP cinema projector with dual processing using a single lens. I also heard the the new 3D glasses look more like a nice pair of sunglasses.

http://www.capturedbyrobots.com/ Captured by Robots has been around for many years now... I saw them at a rock show at least 5yrs ago (DRMBOT freaked me the heck out...I think I had nightmares for the next two nights!). At least GTRBOT66 looks like a robot. The schoolies machine doesn't leave much of the guitar exposed...it might as well not be there...
Feel like you are being looked over for promotion? Get a BlackBerry! You will be promoted in no time.
...and when you feel so important and indispensable that you need to take calls in public restrooms; just make sure you grab for your blackberry and not a dingleberry.
You are missing the point. In the US its a two horse race, you are either for or against a candidate. Bush won but 49% of the population did not vote for him and now have to shut up and like the result.
In 1992 it was nearly a 3 horse race with Ross Perot in the mix. Only ~42% voted for Clinton so that means ~58% (~60 million votes!) had to "shut up and like the result." A majority of the Perot votes were thought to have come out of the Bush ranks so without Perot the outcome could have been much different.
I'm not following how providing 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc., choices provides a better representation of the popular vote in Ireland. If I don't get my first choice then I still end up with someone else, which is what happens here in the US. Can you expand on this or provide a link to information?
What makes the parent post worth 5, Insightful? It's just full of jibberish.
Looked into what number? What does this mean "...a good portion of the difference in the number of counted votes is made up by spoiled ballots."? The number of votes counted by what or whom?
"Different voting methods have different methods of error. In fact, this is enough to throw an election to one side or the other." In what "fact" do you base this on. Do you have any useful facts or links to facts for us to judge your statement with?
What do you mean by "if the Surpreme Court was honest" and "...[force] the nation to clean...up the electoral system." How were they dishonest and how can they force a change to a system that is clearly defined in the Constitution? Only the States can change the Constitution, not the Supreme Court.
There may be reasonable ideas in the post but it's just too sloppy and misleading to be considered "insightful".
"What they can do, however, is force a state to comply with equal-protection in both policy and deed. A state can't legally declare that minority votes count as 3/5th that of a white male, or set up one understaffed polling place with few provisional ballots per minority-dominated county and multiple well-staffed and well-run polling places per white-dominated precinct."
Where do you believe this to be stated? What state has set a 3/5th vote for minorities? The States have traditionaly provided their own rights to vote. In US history some states even allowed non US immigrants to vote in order to attract settlers. Some states allow fellons to vote, others do not. Some states allowed blacks to vote while others did not. My point is that I am only aware of the States being bound to the Constitutional provision providing the electoral college.
Anyone can say anything but can they back it up with *real* facts and not just the words "in fact"?
...meanwhile... the folks that work for you post "management sucks", "management is clueless", etc, messages on/. because while you are out fighting the good fight for them, they have no idea and think you are worthless because you don't share every little detail about how you stuck your neck out for the crew....i could go on but the people who have made the transition to management will know exactly what I mean.
"walk the entire team right the fuck out halfway "
That's a great idea if everyone will do it...problem is there will always be someone who will stay behind and in this day there are plenty of people waiting in line to take over. I've seen contracted developers try this only to find themselves looking for another contract.
"No company can run with only management because they don't actually do any of the work."
I realize slashdot folks spend more time bashing management then supporting but this is a rediculous statement. Of course companies cannot run with only management but to think management doesn't do any work is completely wrong. Projects don't get funded or selected without management. Conflicts don't get handled, people don't get hired and fired, organizations don't get formed, good teams don't get put together, training programs don't get established, status reports don't get handled...I could go on... the point is, unless you have been a member of management you cannont know the struggles that go on. Just keep in mind that everyone thinks their job is the hardest and most important.
btw...I agree with the "over worked" premise that the former EA employees have presented. The problem is that this is a society issue and not one that is specific to EA. I've been studying the "over worked American" for a couple years and I can tell you that the issue is not exclusive to the IT or gaming industries. As long as we Americans strive to live in excess we will work in excess.
