No, it won't. The places that are starving are not the places that will have phone centers. The places that are starving tend to have very corrupt governments which won't allow their people access to food. Most of these people cannot even read their own langauge, let alone English.
It isn't like there isn't enough food to feed these people, it's that often times when we try to help, the governments won't allow many aid workers into the countries and when people try to ship food aid in, it just ends up getting diverted to the army and such. The real answer to Africa's problems isn't phone centers, it's getting honest governments. And if you or I had a 1 sentence solution to that problem, well we would be talking about it in Oslo, not /.

This is why things like iTunes and the like are great for artists. After their RIAA contract expires, they can get paid for music with almost no costs to them. I'm not sure about other services, but iTunes is accepting independent artists. There are no cds to produce, and Apple will do your advertising for you if you make it worth their while.
I guess till the RIAA gets wind of this and forces the distributors not to accept independent artists lest they lose access to all RIAA titles...

I know, it's ironic that that when computers are advertised, they usually have the most blazing fast cpu and crap for the rest(thought this is improving). For the money, more RAM would probably help users out better than a SCSI disk(or 2 since the advent of high end video games, mp3s and movies has really caused the demand for storage to soar)

Heh, off-topic, but you also forgot another interesting point(which may have parellels to today, depends on how you look at it) Spain diverted a lot of naval resources from fighting to hauling stuff back from the New World. That helped the British defeat the Spanish Armada and allow Britian to eventually become the world's super power till the Americans and Russians took over that role after WWII.
Here is the wikipedia article if interested. Though the conclusions drawn by the wikipedia article could be under contention. My history text in high school(which was a great text) pointed to this same event as one of the most defining moments in American history.

I got news for you, games, and music are not your rights, you don't have some innate right to access games and music.
