Um, "cease to exist" means a lot more than "cease to exist as a standalone product" in fact, they are opposite meanings. The highlighting emphasises the negative...I think this is a great announcement that sends a confused message. Hey they are adopting Linux more strongly, thats good right? They are not dropping NetWare, thats good for current NetWare users.

If the punishment doesn't fit the crime, that is not the fault of the rule makers. That is the fault of the rule enforcers.

Actually Hong Kong has good examples of smart card technology in place using similar paradigm. Get on the bus...wave your smart card near the reader...fare paid,, go to MacD's and pay for your burger...travel on the train, use your card to get access through turn-styles. Millions of people use these every day, literally.

Make life a lot easier than finding the correct change and possibilities for extending its use are endless.

Novell does have plenty of IP to offer in the desktop space as evidenced by their Ximian and SUSE combo however I agree that they would probably not offer this in return for a deal with Chinese business - their attitude to IP in general and copyright in particular would put them off. Rather there are many large business poerating out of HK/Singa pore that they want a piece of.

So lawyers are trying to protect folks, wow, these people are already at the bottom of the cliff! I wonder how many of these cliff-dwellers thought about the legality of their "free" download rather than buying a ligitimate copy. Most probably consider it fair use, like recording off Television or Radio broadcasts. Is there a legal difference because the mdeium is not radio waves?

Yes they helped the nazis and get the money from it, yes IBM paid women the same rate as men (years ahead of its time), yes he was a charismatic figure who predictably clinged onto power too long and was eventually outsed by his own son...so all in all, you can't agree with some of the politics involved but you can say it makes a great "reality soap opera"...very interesting and lessons to be learnt for all who gain from other history...then again, Billy G never did read much.
