...Today most computer users know computer technology only through Microsoft products. They no longer learn about computing; the Windows user interface discourages anything beyond point-and-click actions. Like toddlers they point at small pictures and they think they are knowledgeable about computers, while the marketroids wax lyrical about how easy and exciting it is, as long as we all keep buying more and more of the same junk.
that is the basis on which many IT managers choose the platforms for their future investments! That and the comforting knowledge that "nobody ever got fired for buying Microsoft."
God help us.
...Of course, technophiles have always been exasperated by the 'ignorance' of non-techies. But these days we're dealing with a generation of users that can't even understand the need to know the basics. All they have to do is double-click on a document, and things start to happen. Of course as soon as the document's file extension (which is hidden by default in the first place) isn't properly associated with an application, the average user is immediately lost. Users have never been invited to learn. They've been told that they no longer need to know about the basics of driving, so they just expect their cars to take them wherever they want to go today.
so the problem is - users. every os can be screwed by ignorant users. of course windows is screwed much more due to very flawed design. so only solution is, like with cars, bikes etc, people should be allowed to use computer only after getting "license" to do it. or something like that. or we all screwed. because today consumer computers has become dangerous weapon... we are in "monkey with grenade" situation and "longhorn" or "shorthorn" or "bighorn" or "otherhorn" will not help it...
...and about every picture on the web that is faked or looks unbelievable people say: that's shoped! of course it doesn't mean that exactly Photoshop is used to fake that picture...
DVD-R and DVD-RW
DVD-R/W was the first DVD recording format released that was compatible with standalone DVD Players.
DVD-R is a non-rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 93% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD-RW is a rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 77% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
These formats are supported by DVDForum.
DVD+R and DVD+RW
DVD+R/W has some "better" features than DVD-R/W such as lossless linking and both CAV and CLV writing.
DVD+R is a non-rewritable format and it is compatible with about 87% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD+RW is a rewritable format and is compatible with about 77% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
These formats are supported by the DVD+RW Alliance.
DVD-RAM
DVD-RAM has the best recording features but it is not compatible with most DVD-ROM drives and DVD-Video players. Think more of it as a removable hard disk. DVD-RAM is usually used in some DVD Recorders.
This format is supported by DVDForum.
I hate my video being locked into one player, so personally I wish qt would just die.
me too.
actually all my encoding hassles solved when i got dvd-/+ burner. now if movie would fit on dvd+-r i use DVD Shrink and if i need to compress it i use DVD2one. fantastic speed and 1:1 quality (if movie fits without recompression). no more 16 hour encoding on my p2-350. 30 minutes and all done. no glitches with 3:2 pulldown (most ripping tools has problems with that), problems with aspect ratio, audio sync... and plays on all standalone dvd players.
These Indeo 5.1 encoded master clips are virtually identical to the original MPEG-2 video on the DVD...
they used Indeo codec... if uncompressed uses too much space all sources must be compressed with Huffyuv. now that would be a identical master clip. simple as that.
i replaced my cd burner with dvd burner i'm not interested in mpeg 4 codecs anymore:-) but before that xvid was and still is my favorite. beats other codecs hands down.
... at 16mhz road rash 1, 2 and 3 will playable smoothly at last? actually many megadrive/genesis games has ugly framerate. except sonic of course:-) only in two player mode framerate drops there. and what about first playstation? many good games has slow framerate and many even without vsync. for example "world's scariest police chases".
...and no match for Lightwave too (thats what i use). in LW creating, importing and working with logo is like dream. for me:-) tryed Blender too - didn't like.
bad luck. my 850MB IDE Seagate Medalist and 1GB SCSI Seagate Hawk is still very much alive and working on this box 24h a day. so flash cards definetely still won't beat HDD in lifespan.
i'm not insisting that my professional software must be free on Linux. why Maya, Houdini, Softimage is ported to Linux if Blender is there?;-) maybe because people use software that they know exclusively and that helps them to do specific task on the best available platform? professionals don't believe that Gimp is as good as Photoshop. not yet.

Eventually, if everyone moves to linux, we will have the same problems as windows users wrt worms and viruses.
wrong. that's why.
A lot of programs/routines in linux will have to be refined if there is any chance of linux become a usable desktop operating system.
in that sentence word "linux" should be changed to "windows". and that's why.
...me too. to my mandrake / iptables :-)
If this isn't a monopoly, I don't know what is.
it's a World domination by Billgatus of Borg.

yep, that's correct.
actually MPEG-2 is 24 bit
i work with LightWave 7.5 and it has Over 320 bit IEEE floating point rendering pipeline and can render to 24, 32, 48 or 64-bit RGB files.

NASA? you know, those two thingies with wheels and antenas on Mars has 20M pixel cameras...

just a few days ago my friend, while looking at my computer, said "Do you have whole internet in here?"
:-)
i said "Yes. The whole damn thing."
...if we can just remember one simple fact: the Net is a world of ends. You're at one end, and everybody and everything else are at the other ends.
:-)
sorry don't now about others but i have another end right here on this very chair
