" FYI, I'm not diabetic. However, trading one method of maintainin health for another doesn't sound such a good idea."
FYI, I am diabetic. Trading regular doses of a anti-rejection drugs for the constant maintenance of my blood sugar all day every day is a trade I would happily make. I realize that you are not diabetic and cannot really understand what it is like. Diabetes is not a diseas that you "treat" with periodic injections of insulin. Because your body cannot regulate your blood sugar you have to do it yourself with both diet and medication, all day, every day. The consequences of failure can be fatal. Even if you do a good job, diabetes will almost certainly reduce your lifespan by more than 10 years. The consequences of failure also include blindness, kidney failure, the loss of limbs and heart disease. Yes, it is a trade I would make.
"The author argues that media companies are systematically ruining the MuniWiFi efforts across the country, likening the community initiatives to a form of communism."
I do not want the goverment in controll of my access to the internet. If the govenment gives away free internet access, the "for pay" services will not be able to compete and will go under. That will leave the government in full control of my access to information.
I have no problem with government agencies providing free access in libraries, parks, airports, schools, and government buildings. I consider this to be approprtiate and even usefull. I do not, however, want the government providing free wifi in my home.
" Can someone please entertain the question as to why Apple won't release their OS for commodity hardware such as x86?"
You have to remember that at it's heart Apple is a hardware company. Yes they make a great OS, but the purpose of that OS is to drive hardware sales. Making the x86 platform a more user friendly environment would actually hurt apple sales.
"TG is owned by OSTG, the parent company of Slashdot, so activate all conspiracy theories now"
Cmdr Taco is just a shill for Think Geek. He has obviously been paid off to post as many Think Geek related articles. In fact most of the links in his other posts actually link to Think Geek.
" Supposedly the Pope is dying. And that it is an event of real world importance."
I agree. I remember when he was elected. He has created a great legacy and will leave the world a better place for having been here.
It will be interesting to see who the next Pope will be. I am betting on the Cardinals picking an African. It will be a good political move for the Catholic Church. Also it is possible that a Pope from there will be able to do as much to better the lives of the people from his region as Pope John Paul II did for the people of Eastern Europe.
It just proves that April Fools is an international holliday. It also proves the/. is not completely americentric. BTW anyone know what the BBS came up with today?
From the article: He has reportedly paid DVD Jon an undisclosed yet bizarrely huge amount of money to join Apple. DVD Jon has accepted the offer adding to the ever-growing list of hackers who bag security jobs (pun unintended) in big companies.
"Management has a natural bias against things that cost money but don't generate revenue, at least directly."
I once had a new CEO come in and reqire every department to do an RIO (Return On Investment) report to justify their head count and budgets. In ours we reported that due to process automation, the company had been able to reduce head count in two departments by 80% while increasing efficiency by 25%. It is a cruel way to justify your job, but we kept our full head count and budget.
"Once the project is in progress, and specially as you start demoing it, the end users will start adding requirements that had never come up before no matter how detailed you tried to be. And of course all the "wouldn't it be nice if"s."
Yeah I go live with a project Saturday. At this morning's status meeting they actually tried to add new features. I just laughed and said "There aint no way."
" Then they are either padding their project plans way too much, or are really not trying to do anything new."
We used to call it the Scotty rule. It is from one of the Star Trek movies. Basically it goes like this:
If you think it will take a week, say it will take three. Then complete it in two weeks and you are a hero.
"My home computer that hasn't been backed up in ages: I smack my head until I pass out. When I wake up I smack some more. I gnash my teeth as I lament the demise of my Diablo2 level 46 druid! Oh and all the pictures of both my kids."
Q: What is the first thing you do when your computer crashes?
A: Swear from now on you will make regular backups.
Q: What is the last thing you actually do when your computer crashes?
A: Begin making regular backups.
Here is my alternative. It is called Copernic Agent. It is a desktop application that searches multiple search engines returns the results sorted by relevance. It will then let you further refine your search by searcheing aginst the actual pages in the result list. There is a free version that is crippleware. I bought the personal version and it was my favorite tool for searching job sites when I was unemployed.
"But who produces the requirements? Not the programmer. That's usually the job of the business analyst, someone who may not even have experience with coding logic.
Yeah that is what I was thinking. For this to be usefull, the requirements have to written in a format that mirrors programming logic. If you are not a progrmmer, you probably do not think in that kind of logic. That is why most the the requirements documents I see are incomplete and open to interpretation.
Actually I was referring to Mac OS 9 as not being a real OS. One of my main complaints with the Mac OS of old was that you couldn't lift the hood and tinker. With OS X that is not the case. Under the hood it is still BSD. I consider that to be a good thing.
"All this suggests the question... how many iPod-touting Slashdotters are thinking of switching?"
I have been consulting for a large Linux shop the last few months and was surprised at the number of people running Mac laptops. The company itself provides Linux desktops for everyone, and Windows laptops for the suits, but a lot of the developers and other IT people use Mac laptops for their personal computers. I have to say I have been pretty impressed with what I have seen in terms of performance. Besides Mac just give you that extra little "Wow!" factor. Of course it is BSD under the hood, so it is a real OS. They really are slick machines. I do not think that the Ipod is the influencing factor here though.
"It was so powerful, and perhaps poorly designed, that I'd hear his conversations inducted into my own landline as he drove by. "
In my neighboorhood I have three ham radio operators within about ten blocks of me. I am convinced one of them is running an illegal amplifier. When it is transmitting, I get sine waves on the screen of every television in the house. When he keys the microphone, he broadcasts through my computer speakers even with my computer turned off. I finally got fed up with it and complained to the FCC. They sent me some nice brochures on how to shield my home entertainment equipment from RF interferance.
"One conclusion: the body is generating actual morphine on its own."
But your body does produce morphine. Actualy endorphine. That is why morphine works so well. It mimics the bodies own pain killers. By the same token, I distrust any placebo effect test using morphine because of the bodies ability to synthisize these opioids.

Though seriously you should click on some of the links in the original article. There is some funny stuff there.
March to end "Beg The Question" abuse
But seriously isn't this FlameBait?
I think it's a conspiracy.

2. ?????
3. Profit
Here.
Sounds like a conspiracy!

That woud do it for me.

Don't you mean 946684799? Or did you mean 11111001111?
Oh well, since I am at GMT - 6, I guess that means it will be Thu, 17 Mar 2005 07:58:31 CST for me. I'll have to set my alarm clock.
