So a hacker can still spend for an hour! That's what they do now! This seems a useless solution.

A better solution already exists. My CitiCard comes with VANs (Virtual Account Numbers), where I can generate new card numbers + code with a limit on dollars and time (2 to 12 months expiry date).
If I want to do an online transaction for $99 at a merchant, I just generate a new VAN for $99 (or $100 to account for pre-auth by some merchants) and an expiry date 2 months out, and use it.
No other merchant would get approval with subsequent transactions using that number, nor any transaction over the limit I set.
The card expires automatically in 2 months unless I close it sooner.

It is the greatest thing in online credit card solutions I have yet seen.

Now, my 'real' card number was stolen recently and a fake was created and used a few states away; where it was fortunately flagged and I was notified and the card cancelled.
This 'changing code' thing might have prevented even this type of hack. That is, until someone figures out (or otherwise steals) the algorithm!

  18. Re:Who was behind this? on Scientists Identify Another Source of Dangerous Greenhouse Gases: Reservoirs (popsci.com) · · Score: 1

I agree! This makes no sense as anything other than an attempt to insight another energy-wasting movement!

Regardless of whether or not reservoirs contribute significant greenhouse gasses, we humans have a responsibility to devote fully adequate resources to mitigate threatening issues of any kind.

And it starts with GOOD leadership and national policies. Like, for example, force NATO members to pay their fair share so we can reduce our military budget so we can channel more resources (i.e. money, ...) to programs that educate people and then implement those mitigations...

  19. Hope this leads to a redefinition/purpose of 'cable' service; to that of providing only internet service as a utility.

Since internet service is such a necessary thing these days, it makes sense to have it regulated as a public utility.
Providers can then add on other fully optional 'bundles'; yet allow freedom to go elsewhere for streams. Yet, the connection to the web needs to be separate and regulated.
The monopoly that cable companies have now is NOT in the interest of the general public.

Here's my plan (once cost is within reason):
Engage NATO allies to pay their share, so that...
The US Defense budget can be halved, which would allow...
Infrastructure (and other needs like education) can be vastly improved (like bridges, and internet access)...

Then, Internet service could be reasonably priced, and add-on pkgs/streams could (possibly) be more reasonably priced as well.

  20. Streaming is fragmenting though. Yahoo is stealing some shows from Hulu. CBS is going solo. BBC is launching their own separate channel. Soon it will be more expensive to cut the cord because streaming is fragmenting so badly.

Agreed. And (cable companies) will likely come up with a plan to 'bundle' such streams for a fee close to what separate streams might cost.
It just seems a logical evolution for smart cable companies - if it is possible.
