  1. brake lights on Detecting Tailgaters With Lasers · · Score: 1

I often thought about rigging up my brake lights to a switch so I could make it appear to the tailgater that I've slammed on my brakes without actually doing so (because actually hitting the brakes could end up with the tailgater ramming into me). It's almost certainly an illegal modification and if someone ended up dead (such as the tailgater panics, hits the brakes and loses control and hits another car) because of it, I'd have a hard time dealing with that. So I've given my car to charity. You all can have the highway wars. I live in the city and walk or take transit everywhere now. It's amazing how much lower my stress level is and how little I miss the places I use to drive to now that I've found lots of new places to go to. I know most people don't want that, but it works for me.

  3. Why oh why must open source use such bad names? on 9 Open Source Companies to Watch · · Score: 2, Interesting

Asterisk is a much better name than Mark Spenser's senior project at Auburn: NADS. I don't think the professor was amused. If I recall correctly, they got the lowest grade in the class. I know some of the names are suppose to be funny but unless you're lucky enough to have a true geek running your IT department (pretty rare), you're not going to be able to use something named Drools or Groovy, no matter how good the product is.

  4. Re:I love it in the deep south on Where the Highest Paying Tech Jobs Are · · Score: 1

Actually, most of the anti-Alabama posts were from people who actually live there or have lived there in the past. Some people love it there but in general those who get an education, especially a science related one, end up moving elsewhere. That's not ignorance, it's choice.

  5. The Gump? No thanks! on Where the Highest Paying Tech Jobs Are · · Score: 1

The nice thing about Montgomery is that two interstates intersect there, making it easier to get away. The tech jobs are mostly civilian jobs on the military base. The only culture to speak of is the Alabama Shakespeare Festival (which I will admit is surprisingly good). The nightlife is terrible. The current mayor is a hundred times better than the previous good ol' boy but it is still a bland boring place. You'll need the extra money you make to make frequent trips out of there.

  6. Stop the groovy naming on Your Thoughts on the Groovy Scripting Language? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I wanted to use Drools and Groovy a while back to set up the variable pricing for a tollway. But who on earth is going to put that kind of system in the hands of technology named Drools and Groovy? No one wants to sound like an idiot going to their boss to suggest using anything with those names. Digital started off as Digital Intergalatic Research but quickly realized that suits don't use products that they feel stupid saying. A pun here or there is ok but there is a limit and I think Groovy, no matter what the technical benefits, has stepped over that line and can never be taken seriously. At least the Java community for the most part has gotten over the coffee metaphors when naming new products.

  8. CEO != the general public on Cisco Plans Its Home Invasion · · Score: 5, Insightful

Just because the CEO thinks something is cool doesn't mean the general public will. I've used all kinds of high end video conferencing systems and none of them come anywhere close to replicating the experience of being in the same room with other people. And that's in a business setting. The difference between being together and being hooked up on video conference would be even greater for social situations. Throw in the lesser quality that they're going to have to go with for a home system over a business system for cost reasons and things look really dim. Which isn't to say there would be any market, just that the experience is not likely to be compelling enough to become a big seller.
