Face it, the iPhone is inferior to most phones commonly available in Japan. Most phones available in the west are inferior to what is commonly available in Japan. But, the iPhone is even inferior to most phones competing against it in Western and US markets. You bought an iPhone because it was "hip", not because it was utilitarian. A touch screen for its sole input device is contrary to utilitarian. Which is exactly the point of my original post. If you want a phone "that [just] makes phone calls", you wouldn't be in the market for an iPhone in the first place.

Google is crapping all over developers. Until Google implements a real copy protection mechanism which binds an application to a specific phone, they are giving all developers the middle finger. No if, ands, or buts. Google direly needs to fix their half-ass, poorly conceived, completely broken "copy protection" mechanism for something that really works. Period.

That may also explain why the initial Garmin offerings were to be Android and was later changed to be a MS offering with Android to be provided sometime, indefinitely, down the road.

It does suggest MS influenced Garmin to change direction in exchange for going after Garmin's competition. And now that MS is going after TomTom, a direct Garmin competitor, it certainly smells like classic MS tactics. It cuts off Android, an admitted threat to MS, while helping Garmin potentially get a leg up on Garmin's competition while further extending MS' reach into the cell world.

There have been several exposes done on the quality of news coverage provided to Obama and McCain during the election and the difference was night and day. McCain had to practically chain a reporter to cover him, his position, or event. On the other hand, reporters had a hard time getting to the presses to cover Obama because they couldn't let go of his teats. The Daily Show did an excellent job of contrasting the differences in media coverage.

GWB also has a lover affair with the press when the war started. Ratings spiked. But once he could no longer assure the press' safety in a war zone, go figure, the press quickly turned on him. After all, you can't spike your ratings on a war you can't cover in the field. Once the press realized this, they immediately turned. Lies, both indirect and direct, from the green zone are also well documented. The press is fully aware they misreported lots of information but they never bother to correct it.

Simple fact is, the news is considered entertainment now and as such, they are squarely in media with all that is entertainment in America. Its almost impossible to find unbiased political news. If you really haven't figured this out, you are a puppet, regardless of your political affiliations.

Being HTC, there's no way this phone has a bigger battery than the G1, and battery life will suck.

Doubtful. The images I've seen makes the battery look like its about 2x larger than what the G1 has. And they already have batteries available for the G1 which are only about 33% larger but yield 2x - 2.5x times increase in battery life. And, there are other batteries which are the same size which offer ~40%-50% increase in battery life. Remember, this unit doesn't have a keyboard so that drastically opens the door for a much larger battery. Also, this is a newer generation so I'll be surprised if its power consumption isn't lower. And, Android keeps getting better (especially device drivers) which also creates lots of room for more power efficiency. IMO, it is very unlikely power will be an issue with this unit.

And as a bonus, you're not surrendering huge chunks of screen real-estate to support a clunky, non-tactile, error-prone, slow keyboard.

Any smart phone which does not have a real keyboard is deficient IMO. Again, IMO, this is a classic trade off between utilitarian function and stylish fashion. The iPhone is an 8-inch stiletto. If GCC is holding its own against Intel's compiler for your work load, I suspect it is a combination of factors. One, for your workload GCC's optimizations are actually doing things properly. And two, your workload is likely a non-ideal candidate for Intel's palethera of optimization capabilities. Regardless, it certainly is impressive if GCC is now capable of holding its own. The native MS compiler is actually pretty dang good. It out compiles gcc any day of the week. MS need only worry about optimization details for a single architecture and platform. The GCC guys on the other hand have to optimize for tons of different chips, variants, and platforms, and as such are much more limited in what they can do. Furthermore, its is very likely the MS compiler supports many optimizations which GCC simply doesn't even support.

So its really not fair to say they created a half-assed version for Linux. There are many potential reasons why performance can greatly vary between platforms - especially if different compilers are used to create the builds.

Now here is some food for thought. Considering MS has a vastly superior compiler which commonly generates code 20%-50% faster, and in some corner cases even more than GCC, now imagine how poorly much of their code is written such that Linux with such a performance penalty, due to its native compiler, commonly out performs Windows. Hmmmm....
