The killer apps already exits When the hardware to run VLC,firefox, open office etc adequately gets to the point where the microsoft rents are untenable then they will be widely used. I expect sub $100 dollar set top boxes and such to finally break the windows monopoly. barriers to really cheap computers have included: 1 a minimum hard drive price point (with ever increasing capacity) 2 a minimum CPU price point (with ever increasing capacity) 3 expensive dedicated display devices I predict ever cheaper flash will solve the minimum hard drive capacity issue by allowing ultra cheap albeit ultra small drives the migration of data to the web e.g. youtube and gmail will aid in making them useful the use of x86 cpus in embedded devices will break the minimum cpu price point the proliferation of HD televisions will make tiny stand alone machines useful ever cheaper flat panels will make dedicated displays plausible for sub $100 devices the proliferation of microsoft free devices and browser applications will create an ecosystem for third party software that is finally free of the microsoft monopoly rent APIs. Microsoft knows this , that's why they're after yahoo while the stock market is down

The configurable spam filter would be a great idea for slashdot.

I can think of a lot of phrases that would increase the signal to noise ratio (for me) if I could use them to exclude noise.

While I wouldn't say any number is "enough" in the fast changing computer biz I do agree that display port is likely to stay a high end niche solution. Historically when an existing solution can be tweaked a bit it is very difficult for a completely new standard to emerge - no matter how much more elegant. x86 vs EPIC/Risc/etc, Eisa vs Microchannel, ethernet vs atm etc. I'm betting hdmi will scale for a while yet - just as it has already with 1.3. TV is in the process of giving hdmi a huge ecosystem, once that exists everything else is just engineering. Most systems are still using VGA which has been already stretched out far beyond any original limitations. (and looks like crap on my Bravia, forcing me to burn an HDMI link, but that may just be a Sony failing)

HFCS also helps make soda-pop cheaper so more people use it as a water substitute. Amusingly this cheapness is largely because American tax dollars are used to subsidies the ADMs of the world. It is quite funny if your heartless enough to enjoy it. When I was growing up in the 70's soda pop was relatively expensive and was an occasional treat. Now I see a lot of children who consume pop and other sugar drinks routinely. I was always skinny until a few years ago when I hit my late thirties then I began to expand. By just cutting the sugar in my coffee I dropped 20 lbs over a few months. That's all I did and I did it because I was worried that sugar crashing was robbing me of energy. I have never dieted or even considered not eating when I was hungry.
