  1. Re:Sounds cool on GEOS Available for Download After 18 Years · · Score: 1

According to apples page, the software is packed into a self extracting Macintosh archive (sea). So, I do need a Mac to download/extract the software and write it out to floppy.

Thanks. Now to find a Mac with a floppy drive so I can use this stuff.

At first I though the title said GSOS, which was the MacOS like system on the Apple IIGS, then I saw it was for Commodore. Still looks cool, now if only I had a C64 to try it out on. One of these days...

The T40, T30, T22, T20, 600E, and 600 all have no problems booting the latest Knoppix. I work at my college's helpdesk, and the laptop program has been with IBM for the last few years. Knoppix can be quite the lifesaver when windows (whatever) barfs.

Here's a nice lamp: Osram XBO2000 2000W lamp 2000 hour life. $600 each Cost/hour: $0.30 + electricity Requires heavy vest, face shield, and safety googles while changing in case lamp ruptures due to the extreme high pressure inside the envelope. I've seen the effects of one of these breaking on its shipping container - there is a reason they are shipped encased in a plastic shell in solid styrofoam padding - the plastic shell looked like there was an explosion in there.

  7. This new stuff is great but.... on Display Format Technologies Comparison · · Score: 1

All this new high-res stuff is great, but there is the problem of the existing installed base and lowest common denominator. I can't speak for the consumer market, but my research on digital cinema shows that the standard is DLP running at 1280x1024 with the appropriate anamorphic lenses to achieve the correct screen ratios (1.85:1 and 2.35:1). This looks to be the standard for some time to come based on the cost of the installs. The theater I work for, back in 1999, priced a single projection head (no lamp, lenses, disk array, or sound system) at approximately $250,000. We choose to stick with the existing film system based on that and not upgrade. With the prices like that, it is likely that large scale installations will remain at that low resolution for some time come based on the costs of upgrading. ** disclaimer - it has been a year since I last did any serious research on pricing for digital cinema. The standard is still 1280x1024 pixels

I've found through experience that if an app calls for a certain type of processor with a minimum speed (say 1 GHz PIII), you can generally get away with a much slower CPU of the same family. On the other hand, I've been bitten by apps that state Windows 95 required, but won't run on anything newer.

Considering the game was released for free, there isn't too much to gain by keeping the source locked up. It also shows the ID thinks the source is past its prime, as they tend to release their older engines when they have been replaced by the next big thing.

I've never taken an exact count on our socapexes, I just know there are 18 conductors minimum. I genereally get to manage 875 ft of it for a show - unspool and run, then respool afterwards on the same day. One cable isn't the problem, its the huge mass of them. Definately better than running 36-48 individual circuits thought. Between them and our camlocks, new audio people tend to get very scared.

  13. Re:Old Stage Hand Trick on Controlling the Cable Congestion? · · Score: 1

The 50 Amp cables are not the pains to deal with. Its the 20 Amp 18 conductor snakes that are a pain. The other secret is use a long enough cable for the job and not longer. If you need a 10 ft extension, don't use a 30 ft cable, use a 15. Using the proper length of cable makes cable management so much easier.

The technical director at my college just switched us from a 15 year old clear com system starting to show its age to a set of Motorola talkabouts. All of us hate them and use the clear coms when he is not around since we prefer them for the headsets and the fact that we don't have to worry about batteries . Full duplex is also a great feature except when everyone is trying to shout each other down.
