However, many developers still prefer the old suite and are gearing up to start a development group independent of the Mozilla Foundation and branch off from Mozilla 1.7. For this purpose, it has been suggested that they call the software "The Seamonkey Internet Suite" because, no longer being affiliated with Mozilla, they can't use the "Mozilla" name.

Sounds like a good idea. After all, why not? Mozilla suite is a good piece of software, and was my chief web browser until Firefox 0.6 (Firebird).

If Mozilla Foundation does let seamonkey die off, I think there should be a group dedicated to improving the codebase independantly of Mozilla.

Sure. IE will install and work on anything, if you can get Win95 on it. But would you really want to use it on an old machine? All you have to do is hit ONE website with the cascading popups feature, and the auto-download of spyware; and your computer is now too slow to run IE.

Actually, Linux's problem in the marketplace is simply marketing.

I have alot of non-technical friends that I hang out with. If I ask any of them what Linux is, 4 out of 5 go "Huh, what?", and the other only knows about it because of me.

Ask them the same question, but only about Windows this time, and they go "Oh yeah, I know that P.O.S.!".(*)

Simply put, people just do not know about alternatives. They have heard of Macs, but their opinions on them are still in the pre-G4 beige box era (When Macs SUCKED. -- They don't now.) and that they are expensive (They still are, even Minis are more spendy than some cheap-ass PCs I've seen).

The thing is, people will give a "flying fuck" about a certain technology, if they are able to at least SEE it. My friends that I have shown Linux to, all want me to install it on their computers. My own mother prefers Linux, and she is the least computer-minded person I've met. Give people a medium to view a technology, and they'll make up their own opinions on it.

Linux isn't going to sell until it gets mindshare. I think this is what the whole "advocacy thing" is about.

(*) I have yet to meet someone that loves Windows. Its always a "necessary evil" to them ('cuz they don't know any better. Nothing wrong with that.)

I have to agree with the parent here on this one. Despite the fact that AOL butchered up our favorite browser with this... thing, they really haven't done anything wrong here.

In fact, I'd rather have more users use SOMETHING, anything, other than IE to webbrowse, and if Netscape8 does it, more power to them.

Hell, maybe Netscape 8 will eventually turn users to Firefox eventually (hopefully) as Netscape 7 did to turn me to Mozilla, and later Firebird (then later Firefox). It could happen.

The slashdot crowd has nothing to worry here. We still have our multiplatform Firefox browser here. Its all good. I'm actually glad that this netscape is win-only, we don't NEED it. (We as in the Linux/BSD/Mac users.)

Besides; how long would it be before there are themes for this Netscape browser that makes it have a more, integrated UI design? I give it a week.

Would you have a case (again, theorically if you did have that patent BEFORE Photoshop was released)? My guess is yes, and Adobe would have to pay. Here's the problem: They have lawyers and money to back them, you most likely, do not. Just like Gimp.org.

This is why patents (at least the broad generalization type patents for software) simply suck. Patent one-click purchasing? Come on.

Patents on software is like patents for books. What if there was a patent for "medieval fantasy" before Tolkien wrote The Hobbit? It would suck for him would'nt it? I guess the question is: Is software more like hardware, that it does a function--or is it art? or Science?

Also considering where I live you really only have two choices of Broadband--Cox and SBC; since I already had a phone account with SBC, getting the DSL was much cheaper then getting cable TV & cable internet (You can't just get cable internet w/o TV.) Therefore, they own half of the broadband services here.
