I hope that this graphical installation process is optional. There is a certain level of coolness in installing Gentoo manually with the command prompt setup they have now. Either way, I don't think they will please everyone because compiling everything takes for ever, and the impacient will not be pleased. I know you can install precompiled packages, but then you might-as-well install another distro.

Actually, I have to say that installing SP2 was not a good idea, atleast in my experience. I installed it on one of my computer systems, and it didn't boot. This was just last week, so don't say I probably installed it before it was safe. I had to spend all day installing everything again and of course spend atleast 2 hours of that just getting the damn Windows Updates to make my fresh install current. I will never install SP2 again. Though, I do use firefox, and have been very happy with it because since I've started using it, I've had like no problems with the windows operating system at all.

I have an HP printer, An HP digital camera, and an HP scanner, and didn't install any of its software. Windows XP has all the stuff it need to operate it. The digital camera basicly just acts like a thumb drive, the printer is just a printer, and the scanner has a little program used for scanning the pictures in. I don't see how this is a 'crapflood' of programs. Nothing sits there waiting for me to scan something, nothing sits tehre waiting for me to print, nothing sits there waiting for me to hook up my camera. They are just some more USB devices.

Your problem must be that you install all their crap. The crap is intended for the old people to make them feel like technology is great!

Hook the system up by the switch, have the cable modem hooked up to the router, router up to the hub or switch, and wow, a firewall that is nearly impossible to break through. If you are using Windows as the router, big mistake there. Most of these viruses/worms that you speak of are attacks of windows machines. And yes, my webserver is always getting hits by worms, usually by other RR IP addresses. So, these worms to crawl RR, but if you are behind a routers, there is nothing the worm can infect on the router. You are safe that way.

but you still have the problem of slow connections and text-only browsers. They're going to have some roadblocks on this one....

Slow Connections: This concept is to help the slow connections, but it still may be slow for them. They just need to realize that for about twice the cost (thinking of AOL here) you can have like 500 times the speed.

Text browsers: It would be inserted content and there for the text browsers wouldn't display it, just as they don't display images. Not a problem here.
