Myself, I used to be extremely anti-IP. It just bugged me that we were mandating artificial scarcity. I still feel that way, but the singularity is so much more important. When we build that cyberthalamus, most issues including this one will just go away.
When you are hosted on a computer, everything you view can be recorded by you, as your brain is a computer. Once this happens, any form of copy protection is dead. But at the same time our mentality will change so we won't seek copy protection.
Both our senses and our volition emerge from our thalamus. We should be going to the source, and eventually make a cyberthalamus that hosts sentience in an engineered machine.
That's a 34/45--11/15 physical, 11/15 verbal, 12/15 biological. Of course if I existed as a cyberthalamus, it would be 100%. But my genetics are off limits as a eunuch.
Imagine when we all exist as a cyberthalamus. You won't have all these information restrictions and wierd GUIs on your media collection. It'll just be some chip close to the cyberthalamus.
We will design a cyberthalamus and then what? We won't need the Earth at all. Environmentalism is only important in that it preserves life long enough for it to discover the cyberthalamus and the singularity.
That's a language that can be parsed by computer! Rippin'. But I figure we'll just wait for the singularity before anything really changes, after which we'll use binary code or something. In the meantime it's English, which will be looked at as civilizations greatest joke at some point in the future. It will make it quite hard to make this semantic web.
I'm not going to another extreme. The libertarians have some great ideas for right now--like simplifying tax code. #1 is to get to the singularity, and strong government support for basic science may be needed.
Libertarianism is tempting to geeks, but I say it's place in the future post-singularity when we exist as a cyberthalamus. In the meantime, I'd rather not have to doge bullets on the way to the lab, and would like health care. I'd like less druggies on the streets too--transhumanists aren't completely at home with the dems.
Look I don't want someone climbing into a plane and crashing it on my ass. When I'm a cyberthalamus in a neutron star, I'll take sight-seeing trips to the center of the sun. Won't need the FAA to protect me then at all. But for now, it has its place. Some balance is needed, but I don't see how it is limiting the progress of science towards the singularity--which is what really counts.
Ok here comes the libertarian in a lot of people, at least according to the replies I've seen. Libertarianism will prevail--in the future. Whether it's a brain in a robot or a cyberthalamus, we won't need regulation after that point. The libertarian dream will come true. But for now, I don't want a booster rocket hitting me. If I need to do a neuroscience expermint in orbit, I want all the ship systems intact, and I want to be sure I'll be able to survive the trip.
I was a card-carrying, rabid libertarian not so long ago. But I see now that it will have its place in the future. Post-singularity, a cyberthalamus will not need much in the way of health care and gun control to survive. But for now, some balance has to be struck.
I used to very anti-IP from a libertarian standpoint that it interferes with markets. Wouldn't it be so elegant if we could do away with these silly laws and let the bits free? But anarchy belongs after the singularity, when we know the output to sentience and control the input.
We are not ready yet. Our post-singularity forms, once we find out how to host sentience as the thalamus in the brain does, will need no government. Self sufficient, we can travel the universe in small groups or perhaps alone.
For now, balance seems wise. A brain researcher can work better in a safer world, and if some snooping helps with that, then it's a balance.
English, that is. Homophones make the language a mess. Spanish might be better. Lojban would be quite cool, as that seems to be going along nice. All our languages will seem silly post-singularity.
Hey your game sucks. Nobody will bother pirating a bad, low-profile game. Hell don't even bother with paying for copy protection with crap games!
So if Bush's daughter gets murdered, I'm sure you'll assume it's a publicity stunt for sympathy? Cynicism...overrated.

Extreme cynicism is paranoia. Take your medication, ok???

Or maybe IP fatigue.

Yeah it's offtopic but hey! 95% is a good thing.

I'm an elective eunuch, and frankly I'm just as bold as before. Just don't need to waste time with the hand.

Check for political polls. See how high the libertarians rate. As an ex-libertarian, I know the draw to geeks.

It's a smaller leap than from CDs to DVDs. Not impressed. They can do better.
As one planning to study neuroscience at the PhD level, this is good to hear. It's a huge field, so lots of people are needed!

I dabbled around a bit and only found CuBase to be a real all-in-one. Is sonar by cakewalk on the same level?
My hopes go with you. There are no prayers to speak of from me for you or anyone or anything.
