Folks looking to get a rudimentary understanding of their computer really don't want to read history. That's just a turn off and a waste of their time. If you insist on including historical information, put it in an appendix. What you need to do is determine what it is these folks minimally need to know and put that right up front in the clearest non-geek language possible. If you do that, your book will gain success by way of word-of-mouth and won't wind up on the store shelves among the hundreds of other failures.
What a damn shame! and it's an all too common occurance. Our enemies are killing us one company at a time it seems. Pres. Eisenhower warned us, but it's more like he was preaching to the choir, huh.
W O W ! Thanks for the heads-up. That's all I need is to have to reinstall Windows _again_. This is so very very sad. I had feared that it would come to this. Now my fear has become reality.
It may be years before I can buy another music CD. I'm really really really bummed!.

Thank you for describing the problem so succinctly. Now that hopefully everyone knows what the problems are, What are we going to do about it?
P.S. Sorry you felt like you had to post anonymously. <sigh>
Is this somebody that we're supposed to listen to as though he's an expert in consumer law or something? Well, he's obviously wrong on this one, so why should we even bother any further?
You might want to reconsider that comment, because plastic and mylar are quite inexpensive these days. If that's really what you're after, and in that particular form factor (for whatever reason), you can go to the nearest landfill and get all you want for free.
I can't believe that somebodies statistics show that the average Slashdot reader prefers a serif font. I'm sure if they look a poll on the question, the vast majority of readers would prefer sans-serif. True, one's browser can be forced to use whatever one prefers, but there actually are times when one's favorite is simply not what's appropriate. Oh well, such is.
So? We Americans are the first to admit that there are times when vigilantism is necessary (such as when the people we've elected to do the right thing, won't).
Don't be too hard on Microsoft folks. They're actually doing us a favor by adding to the silly, superfluous, rediculous, asinine, outlandish, daft, ludicrous, nonsensical, cockamamie, absurd, outrageous, preposterous, senseless, and stupid patents that will cause the patent system to self-destruct at some point. Obviously, that point is rapidly approaching.

'For users, openness increases the trustworthiness,' said Lu.
That's certainly self incriminating, isn't it.

In this "Throw Away Society", you have to expect this. Like it, no. Fight it tooth and nail, yes.

Check out Brown's Gas at FreeEnergyNews as well as other proven nuclear remediation technologies there. You may be pleasently surprised.

A or Them. One Microsoft worker or more than one Microsoft worker (them). Which is it?
(kindly preview your stories before posting them.)

you get the idea.
Remember, you heard it here first.
OS-G is going to be FREE (except for the extensions of course).
Why have there been no comments here about the one really big problem with this whole idea?
In a word... HACKED
Yes, I agree that's where the big bucks are .
Smart people also have good grammar skills.
Globalstar is what you need (plus .. oh, you'll figure that part out on your own.)
Oh? And what commercial enterprise does he represent?
that your comment will be archived here on Slashdot.
Think about it. Do you really think something as blatant as this has any chance of even making it into committee? No way.
That proof has been provided already, but your comment makes it obvious that you wouldn't want to hear it.
Whew! It's a good thing we've got lots of folks here at Slashdot that have the answers to all this incredibly complex stuff. Uhhuh. Right. :-b
Oh, hardy har har. This is truly a classic. Oh! my ribs hurt.
