He has waited nine months, the question is how much longer is he willing to wait? Jim, why threaten to do the unthinkable? Be a man of action and just do it. I did almost 10 years ago and I'm not looking back.
I certainly know what you can replace your media center with. That would be KnoppMyth http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KnoppMyth/. I certainly couldn't have created it if I was still on Microsoft's teat.
Why must MS start suing before people refuse to buy their products? I've refused for years and will continue to do us. This wasn't because Microsoft sued anyone. It is because I know better. I know what options I have. I know how to read, hence I can RTFM. I want to understand how various parts interact to make things work. And if I didn't, I can simply install an easy to use GNU/Linux distribution like Mandriva or Linspire or Xandros or give BSD a shot. Open Source/Standards frees one from the shackles for monopolies. Open Source feeds your mind and not billionaire monopolist family.
I'm by no means a technical writer. In terms of writing the pamphlet, I attempt to follow the KISS method. If there is a technical writer out there that is willing to help the project, please step up.
I think if you were to install KnoppMyth, you'd see that is "like cattle". I personally think MythTV is easy to use. Granted, if can be difficult to install, hence my work on KnoppMyth.
When KnoppMyth was first introduced, the manual was sparse. The pamphlet now stands at about 40 pages. Now, the reason that came about is because people asked specifics and I wanted to provided a great understanding of the different parts of KnoppMyth.
Frankly, I think the attitude of not reading or not wanting to read is wrong. That is part of reason we have a monopoly in Redmond. Open your eyes and your mind....
In terms of finding programs, etc. Those are all accessible via the MythTV menu. But I can see where better documentation came come in handy. A while ago, I started on a much updated pamphlet, but it is disheartening to work on something and people doesn't read it. A lot of the question I get in IRC (freenode.net #knoppmyth), are covered in the pamphlet. If only people would RTFM.... But I digress. More work is due on the pamphlet, I've just been busy with my professional life.
In terms of MythTV related issues... Those are MythTV issues and not KnoppMyth specific. Ironically, one of the areas we try and make it easier for users is in MythWeather. Your zipcode is automatically retrieved from the db and entered for you.
I don't ever recall reading or hearing about issues w/ multiple LIRC. When issues like this occur, if you want to see it fixed in a future release, you should bring it to my attention of the forum or via PM or email. The development team isn't very large. We don't have all the hardware that is out there. Even our testers may not have the hardware you have. So, if you want to see something fixed, the best way to bring it to our attention and provide details. Same thing goes if you fix an issue. Provide details and ask to test.
Sorry if my personal and professional life gets in the way of making a release for you. The day you have to pay for KnoppMyth is the day you can stop bitching about releases taking too long.
Prior to the release of R5E50, I'm almost certain one of our testers tested on a SATA optic drive and had no issue. While SATA optic driver are becoming more popular, I don't think there are standard. The use of USB keyboards has been a non-issue for several releases now. Like I state, I'm almost certain there now work out the box. Again, the way to help improve KnoppMyth is by providing details on the forum.
Out of date?! Have you tried R5E50. At the time of it's release, it was about 2 to 3 weeks older than the newest Sid. KnoppMyth has improved greatly. The key to making it better is by providing details on the the forum.
A big fuck you to whomever modded this as funny. There is nothing funny about those that lose thier lives in service of thier country. The current world circumstances are especially sad when a command in chief is as clueless as the idiot in the White House. As a veteran, it brings tears to my eyes when I hear about the lose of life in Iraq. To make light of those that serve with honor is the greatest abuse of the freedoms you enjoy as a result of thier sacrifice.
Yes. I have 4 HD tuners between 2 systems (2 in my master backend and 2 in slave). Generally on Tuesdays on Wednesdays, I have all four tuners recording at the same time. All my records are stored on my MBE. So, the recordings from the SBE are saved over the network.
I"m not certain who is it aimed that... The next release has been tested on a Core 2 Duo. KnoppMyth development is driven by me. How can you expect one person to support the latest hardware when: Hardware support may not be in the kernel (I use vanilla with only 3 patches). I may not have the hardware to test. I'm one person building a distro (Yes, I have helpers. But ultimately, it is up to me if KnoppMyth is to improve.) working in his spare time.
If you want to see something added to KnoppMyth, the you need to contact and work with me.
Vendors choose to support Windows because of the large user based. This is no surprise... What is a surprise is that a lot of tuners cards that do work on Windows won't work with MCE. Why is that?
Or, install Windows Media Center and have it all work out of the box. MythTV may be GORGEOUS and offer tons and tons of functionality Windows Media Center will never provide, but Windows Media Center can be installed and fully configured out of the box in a half hour to 45 minutes. Given hardware that works with Linux, KnoppMyth can be installed in under 30 minutes. One user reported getting it working in 10 minutes. That is from a bare hard drive to watching TV in 10 minutes!
A new KnoppMyth is just around the corner! It is smaller, faster and offers more features. Just be a little more patience folks. The elves are finishing up the work and Santa is tuning the sledge.
Does it matter how many years are left until we run out of oil? We know fossil fuels aren't good for the environment. We know we will one day run out. If we can come up with a solution tomorrow, why pass this problem down to a future generation?
Linux is consumer friendly, what isn't is DRM. Can I get an iPod w/ DRM? Will "Zune" be available without DRM? The consumer needs to be educated about DRM. All DRM does is rob the consumer of his or her fairuse rights. It allows those the mandate it to steal from the unedcuated consumer over and over.
The big media companies want DRM and supported the DMCA. Now they have to break the DMCA to get around their own DRM. Please support the EFF http://www.eff.org/.
IMHO, there is no comparision. Simply put, KnoppMyth is the easiest and quickest method to get a MythTV based set-top box up and running. Of course, I am biased as I started KnoppMyth. KnoppMyth offers "out the box" support for the Hauppauge PVR 2/350, pcHDTV 2/3000 and the Air2PC. Once you have a backend running, you can even use the CD as a frontend! We also include, MPlayer, Xine, NFS, Samba, CyberMediaGate (uPnP server) and much, much more.

Actually, the Japanese verb for watch is miru not miro.

And it isn't just MythTV that uses the guide data provided...

KnoppMyth is meant to be used as a set-top box, not a general purpose computer. KnoppMyth already includes MythBrowser.

You have obviously not spent anytime in #mythtv-user. I've seen lots of folks come in there and ask for help with install MythTV on Ubuntu.
Regards,
My goal with KnoppMyth is to make it easy. Obviously, it wasn't for you. In what ways can we improve KnoppMyth to make it easier?
Regards,
Cecil

I'll probably have diffs available later this evening.... However, I won't have a new ISO until after 2.6.18 has been released and it has been tested.

Both of us starting with parts, I'll wager I can install KnoppMyth http://mysettopbox.tv/ and get it up and running faster than you can MCE.
