>>This should probably read "pre-computed radiance transfer." It's pre-baked radiosity, cooked as a variant on spherical harmonic lightmap encoding.
Whereas Doom3 has no radiosity at all. No line of site to the light source, no light. Pitch black. Levels were very carefully designed to make this flaw less obvious.
>>In other words: no real-time lighting, just PRT, faked dynamic lights (which EVERY other game does) and projective shadows.
Whoa there trigger. There is real-time lighting. It just isn't universal and unified like Doom3.
>>There is also no real HDR (high dynamic range) rendering in Source, just the same clever faking everyone else has.
The HDR rendering isn't enabled in HL2. It's seen only in an engine demo movie. Far Cry is the only game I'm aware of that has HDR currently.
>>The big point that is NOT mentioned in the article is performance. Anyone who has played a lot of HL2 and CS:S can tell you that Source is just sloppy, on any hardware configuration. It is prone to periodic chugging, studders, fps drops from particle effects and physics lag online, etc.
I've played a fair amount. It runs just fine for me. Everyone I've talked to with stutter/chugging problems has had their settings TOO HIGH for their equipment. They think they don't, but the fact that it stutters (where mine doesn't) says otherwise.
>>Valve apparently can not compete in the brainpower department.
Credibility? Gone.
It's understandable to have a personal preference, but try not to let it upset you so much when someone disagrees.
Phil, you're trying to put the DRM in the wrong spot.
Now, I don't agree personally with DRM at all because it limits what I can do with my own files. (No, that DRMed file will NOT play on my car stereo or my off-brand digital music player.)
However, that DRM belongs in the content file, not the distribution system. And that's all bittorrent is. A distribution system.
As for "neccesity", television seems alive and well without any DRM. I can just plug in a TV and antenna and BOOM. "Free" content.
Low fidelity hasn't stopped people from using the MP3 format.

You have to realize that there are a LOT of games that are never reviewed. MOST reviews are of big-budget games made by experienced companies. It would be a shocker if those games had the same "score" distribution (statistically) as games in general.
I use my gamecube for games that non-gamers will appreciate. Yes, that includes girls.
For "mature" or "hardcore" games, I have a wonderful computer. I can play halflife2, farcry, warcraft, etc etc etc. Halo2 was, quite franky, a mediocre game at best if you're a PC gamer. (Yes, I did play it on my roommate's xbox. I'm not just quoting someone else.)
DDR + Mario (wish I had the link to the article from earlier about how they have to put mario EVERYWHERE) announced today. Think I saw it on bluesnews?
That's a good list. I'm looking forward to KOTORII, DSII, and the next Freedom Force. Some possibly interesting ones in the part II also. (I do in fact prefer singleplayer RPGs.)

Oooh. Bad news about that. It sounds like more of a limitation of your screencapture software then any DRM limitation. You see, newer machines use hardware acceleration from the video card to display video. Unfortunately, only certain programs capture the hardware accelerated image.
You want something that will capture both overlay and direct-draw images. There are programs out there that do it.

That would undoubtably be the wife/significant other. Understandable confusion given this is Slashdot. :)
28% of identity theft happens online.
NOT 28% of online transactions result in identity theft.
The first statistic is pretty much completely meaningless unless you put in other facts.
They were making THEIR songs playable by the ipod.
They were NOT making Apple's songs playable elsewhere.

RTFA.
They are RE-COMPRESSING and ALREADY COMPRESSED image LOSSLESSLY.
It's been done. I've seen several different versions online.

"Considering that the iPod came out first and allowed you to play any format of music you wanted form any online music service where is the monopoly?"
Actually, the ipod does NOT play any format. It plays a very SMALL selection of formats. I'm aware only of mp3 and aac.
Anti-spyware is free/will be free.
HOW do people driving cars manage to see the road? I mean, the windshield is ON TOP of the car and the road is BELOW the car.

But it terms of MY revenue, it's a whole lot longer.
(In terms of Wal-Mart employees, it's even longer then that.)
If they can do it without DRM, I'd certainly consider up to $1 worth getting.
Of course, you go anything over that and it's easier for me and just about everyone else to just record it via (DVR of choice).
(Assuming this is a reply to my comment. :P)
That's just plain creepy/weird. I've never had the problem myself, but I wouldn't rule out the possibility.

And 3 years later when you finish, you can start over on the newest update with the security patches?
Sorry, if you don't already know, I can't tell you.

Ok. To most people, IE is perceptually free.
Happy now?
Bad news about that. They actually made money by asking for donations toward this ad.
Just about any Windows media player will do that provided you install the codecs.
I personally like zoom player, but that's a personal preference.
Have you looked at the portable music market lately?
Just because Apple will never be dominate in the OS/hardware market doesn't mean they won't try elsewhere.
