I enjoyed Oblivion and Fallout 3 for the PS3 but they were the two buggiest games I've ever played (including PC games). I think the games froze for me about once per 8-10 hours of play on average.

My understanding of the situation is that they want to do something like monitor all the calls going in and out of a city, hoping to find the "terrorist" call. This "requires" them to spy on everyone (similar to the way spam filters "read" your email). For the record I think FISA is sufficient and I'm really hoping the filibuster succeeds.

Analyzing what they actually have to say is good, however is helpful to understand a person's motivation. Consider the following situations:

    1. A very knowledgeable sales person who recommends an extended warranty seems to want to protect you from expensive repairs/replacements.

    2. A doctor recommends a change in diet to help you reach a healthier weight and reduce your risk of heart disease.

The sales person has his own interests in mind and the doctor has your interests in mind. If you follow the doctor's advice you'll actually need him less. On the surface both seem to have your interests mind. How do you avoid being swindled if you don't judge the messenger?

I thought that the one-button trackpad would be the thing I hated most about my new MacBook Pro (I recently switched from Windows). Thanks to the two-finger click I have grown to love the single trackpad button.

The thing that I'm still fuming about is the lack of a cut (Cmd+x) feature for files in Finder. Would it really be so horrible to allow advanced users who are ok with the "inconsistent" behavior to enable the cutting of files? It would make switchers like me much more productive.

I guess it's better that they don't allow cutting...at least until they fix the bugs with moving files (interrupting a move causes you to lose the files you're copying).

Was there another time in recorded history where one could easily retrieve minor news like a school opening a decade after the fact? It seems to me that by today's standards, most of history could be called a dark age. We are able to record much more data than ever before and we're still worried about losing minor details. It's nearly impossible to imagine a way to NOT lose information over time, given the rate at which it's generated. Maybe we should just accept the fact that we can't save everything.

  17. View of a semi-fan of the PSP on Is There Anything Wrong With The PSP? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Defending the PSP feels a lot like siding with Microsoft, but I'm going to do it anyway. There is nothing wrong with the PSP itself; Sony's attitude toward the PSP is the problem.

The PSP is a pretty slick piece of hardware. There are many complaints about it (high price, long load times, large size, awkward controls, lack of games). The people who focus on these easily attacked points seem to miss the strengths of the system:

    * The PSP is powerful enough to emulate virtually all video game console systems that are of the PSX/N64 generation and older.

    * The despised UMD discs hold quite a bit of data. Games like GTA:LCS are possible because there is enough space for them. The platform is capable of much more than ADHD-inspired mini games.

    * The system connects to a computer using a standard USB cable and appears as a disk. You can copy whatever you want to it (homebrew, music, pics, movies).

The PSP has a lot of potential. With a large memory stick and the right firmware you can carry a large portion of video game history with you wherever you go--almost like an iPod of video games.

Though I'm happy with the hardware I must admit that Sony is strangling the PSP. To allow homebrew is to allow the pirating of games. Sony upgrades the firmware to remove exploits that allow homebrew to continue and then forces users to upgrade to play new games.

Sony fails to realize that homebrew ADDS value to the PSP. The PSP doesn't need a new business model. It simply needs fewer restrictions and more games that people like enough to buy.

Stock Market: The Game (http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=1468) had a similar bug.

The game had 10 turns. You were allowed one trip to the bank each round. On odd rounds you could borrow millions from the bank and invest it. On even rounds you could go to the bank with little or no cash in hand. When the banker asked how much you wanted to repay, you simply said the full amount and he took what you had on you at the time (if anything). This allowed you to borrow about $35 million over the course of the game.

At the end of the game the announcer made fun of you for having made such a pitiful amount of money. The only way to get a high enough score to not be ridiculed was to exploit the bug.

Now that I think about it, the game wasn't very much fun before I found the bug...
