  8. good bloody luck on Pop-Under Deception and Private Property · · Score: 0, Offtopic

This is one of those things where you just need to step up and defend yourself. While there very well may need to be some kind of law in place to protect against such activity, it can't very easily be enforcable worldwide. Plus there's so much bloody red tape these days it would take years for such a law to pass. Take some of these suggestions people have had and run with them. Turn off javascript. Use a browser that lets you turn off pop up windows.

  9. this is pretty easy... on Turn-Based Games: What Happened? · · Score: 1

Turn based games have fallen in popularity for 1 main reason: A real opponent is more interesting / challenging than a computer AI. When you add to this the fact that MOST turn based multiplayer games require one player to act while everyone else sits around, you see why turn based games aren't popular. In their old "I go, then you go" form, they take too long to hold the interest of any but the most hard core gamer.

If turn based games are going to make a resurgance, they will need to speed up the time between turns and let the players feel like they can always interact with one another and not waste their time. Games like Combat Mission have the right idea... Instead of an "I go, you go" format, they do a "we go" format, where both sides enter orders at the same time, then see the results of those orders, repeat. This way the games move along at a decent clip and you can always talk to the other players or tell them to hurry up. ;)

Anyways, turn based games remain a niche market from their lack of engrossing multi-player. No one wants to spend 8 hours to play one game of heroes of might and magic.

I have a g4 450 with an AGP slot and have had a v3 3000 AGP card sitting in it for weeks now without a problem. The "PCI" Mac Drivers also work for AGP ports. Something about AGP being a proper subset of PCI, but don't ask me. I just know it works. ::grins::

Yeah, I can see through this ploy. CmdrTaco bought some stock in a company that produces this "insta rust" stuff, then comes on /.and posts about how 'cool' it looks. After a good /. effect and a nice IPO, he's got millions in stock! mwa ha ha!

Serioulsy... what the heck else would you use "insta rust" for? ::chuckles:: Man, I guess you can buy just about anything if you look hard enough...

  12. Re:You're missing something... on Apple announces the G4 · · Score: 1

    Uh, where have you been?

Rage 128 has no where near the balls of a Voodoo3 or a TNT2. Rage 128 can be barely be called a 3rd generation 3d card. More like a 2.5. It only has a 100 mhz core and 100 mhz memory, compared to the Voodoo3, which you can purchase anywhere from 143 mhz (Voodoo3 2000) to 183 mhz (Voodoo3 3500) core and memory speed, and the TNT2, which is availible in 125core/150memory (vanilla OEM TNT2) up to a 175/200 (Herclues ultra TNT2 card, too bad Herc went out of business, but most ultra TNT2's run at 150/183.). Yes, the rage 128 has 32 bit color. So does the TNT2. And the TNT2 kicks it's ass in frame rate.
I'm not going to ramble about specs. Here, just take a look at this link from Thresh's Firingsquad. There's a nice set of a variety of benchmarks (quake 2, q3test, 3dMark, all in different resolutions and quality modes) in addition to the opinions of some damn knowledgable hardware folks. The ATI Rage 128 performs dismally. It gets last in almost every test. It is NOT a decent card for a "new generation" of computers. I'd much rather have a voodoo3 with the beta mac drivers, even without the 32bit color support.
