...I seem to recall in the past that Creative Commons had some problems with the GPL and its ilk in the past due to its somewhat viral nature. How have they managed to compromise now?
This announcement is like a cool refreshing glass of lemonade. We'll finally be able to explain in agonising detail exactly why SCO is just blowing smoke out of their arse.
It even uses a backported version of Amigo Imnolar's O(1) scheduler patch. I reckon this'll probably run almost as fast as the raw GameCube hardware/firmware.
OK, now this is what I call "a really fucking stupid idea". This is like monitoring library patrons while they're reading books on security cameras to see which books they read and which bits they read.
I'm just curious to know as a digital camera photographer. For instance, I often use a Samsung 800k camera and on Linux the only support is via an obscure little tool you may have heard off, gphoto which is a bit clunky to set up. How is camera support on FreeBSD? I've considered switching.
...the truth of nanotech's future probably lies at neither extreme: I doubt that the disastrous runaway growth grey goo scenarios will be true, nor will they be the be-all and end-all of any kind of physical and biological technology. They'll probably have many useful applications though, possibly concentrated all in one field.
I know that captchas in use at Yahoo! such as The Gimp and Trotsky (cute names, heh) are effectively OCR proof (~20% success rate, IIRC) but what about the security codes which have been used on blogs? As a Movable Type user, I'm concerned about the recent spate of crapflooding caused with this script and even though the implementation of captchas as security codes has slowed the advances of crapflooders, are there any other forms of image verification in the pipeline which we can use?

I'm more interested in the things they do, as opposed to the fact that they're blind. People shouldn't be defined in terms of their disability, but in what they do. (And judging by what these guys do, they seem like mere kiddies.)

Let's face it; when it comes to technology, most people are ignorant. No matter how simple we make things, there will always be simpler people.
It's only logical to assume that the can isn't going to explode. Admittedly, it's not a good idea to put any kind of pressurised container into a very cold or a very hot environment, but water's characteristic of expanding when freezing is very much counterintuitive if you've never encountered it or been taught about it.
...this sounds pretty interesting (for an Apple story, anyway, haha. j/k:-)). From what little I know, AppleScript bears some resemblance to Tcl/Tk but has more Macintosh-specific keywords/functions. Are there any good open source applications out there that I can take a look at, just so I can get an idea of the language? It sounds pretty interesting, and would be easier than purchasing a $25 book. (Especially since I live in the UK!) What's the closest equivalent to AppleScript on a Linux system, also? Is it more like Perl, Python or bash shell scripts? Judging by the sounds of things, it sounds like an even higher level version of bash.
...would there be some way of starting up a coordinated project to find out these arbitrary limits? Would this be impractical? (It's possible that this would be trying to track a moving target.) Maybe it's not that important; it seems that Comcast is only going on rampages on P2P users whenever they're not making quite enough cash.
Any improvement which will lead to an increase in bandwidth for little cost can only be a good thing. I for one welcome this new development and hope that this organisation gets sufficient funding to continue these advances.
I can't believe that those working at the anti-virus companies are so stupid so as to have not yet realised that by sending out all of these fallacious "OMG YOU GOT SPAM" hype emails - to the wrong people of all things - just sucks up twice, thrice, a dozen times the bandwidth of the original worm. Yes, worms are a bad thing, but sending out random hysterical emails about it to all and sundry doesn't help one tiny bit.
Can we trust these results? I'd always been under the impression that the percentage values in Netcraft surveys of operating systems were only accurate to the nearest 10 to 15 percent. Have they improved their methods recently?
How the fuck does Microsoft keep getting away with this bollocks? I'm serious; if any other company fucked up security as royally and as repeatedly as Microsoft has nigh-on continuously for the last half decade, then they quite rightfully would've gone out of business.
For fuck's sake, Bill Gates, get your goddamn act together.
I mean, considering that the BSD license would actually allow them to legally do this, it's more likely that they've yoinked it from an old-ish BSD.
It doesn't even say why Microsoft is doing it: concerns about piracy? relative crappiness of Thai computers? price concerns?
