What gcc needs is support from the hardware vendors themselves. If the hardware vendos all backed gcc, the would be doing their customers a huge favor giving them the flexibility to move between platforms with greater ease, and reducing build engineers to a single toolset.
I think even licencing spammers has potential to pass legal muster. We licence tv stations - even mandate a certain number of hours of "civil" programming etc. Of course the air waves are viewed as public space, while the internet still has a private enterprise quality to it.
That's not really true. While banning spam would be a possible violation of corporate free speech, Taxing spam is no different than taxing movie tickets, publishing houses or radio stations.
Venting into the wall is bad on many levels. First of all, the reduced area of typical wall interiors means less ventillation of the PC. A long pipe is going to put backpressure on the fans and reduce air flow over the CPU, which is the whole point in the first place.
The best way to reduce environmental issues around servers is to move them into a utility room/closet.
The problems with this kind of hypothetical debate are the contradictory assumptions.
If we assume that we will hypothetically understand enough to change the weather, why can't we also assume that we will hypothetically understand the consequences of such an intervention as well?
No doubt. Andreesen is trying to fabricate a crisis so he can save his worthless company, Opsware (LoudCloud), from insolvency and his career from the where are they now file.
Coffee beans that have been roasted have a wonderful smell and thank the Lord for it, because life wouldn't be worth living without good ole roasted coffee beans.
However, anyone who has every roasted coffee knows, that roasting coffee produces very strong unpleasant odors.
Buying green coffee beans is great because they have a shelf life of several years. Once you roast a been, the whole freshness thing comes into play, and the shelf life is only a few weeks before the coffee goes stale.
Roasting your own coffee is not for the feignt of heart and should be done in a well ventalated area (not your kitchen). Outdoor ovens are perfect.
Does the problem that pi can't be expressed in decimal notation extend to other base systems? For example, if you tried to write pi out in binary or hex would you encounter the same problem? Is there a special base system (other than base pi) which can describe pi in a finite number of digits?
It's certainly mainstream in the sense that everyone uses open source software almost everytime they go on the internet. I wonder if the author is asking about "residential PC" open source software. Of course, you'll find BSD running in your toaster so its just about everywhere.
"...you can still usually tell when something is synthetic. But we'll soon be crossing over into a time where that's not possible."
I think we're pretty close to this already. I remember watching the sept 11 planes hitting the towers and thinking it looked "fake" like a movie, simply because it was too incredible believe.
Abner's no Nazi.
uh...
no.
If you find old computer junk glued together eye pleaseing. Don't sell your Picassos yet.

They should tax spam. It's not fair, but fuck em.
I think most people would enjoy just taking a regular bike and riding it outside more than some video game.

So far mankind seems to be doing pretty well.
Since when did apple adopt GPL technology? Darwin is based on BSD not gnu. Does OS-X even ship the gnu tool set by default?

Did anyone else find this article tired, void of invention, and totally lacking in anything inspiring whatsoever.
Andreson - Talk about a dry well.
You will be. You will be.
Not to mention, if you are going to have an evil Piccard, the evil Piccard has to have a goatee.

If they abandon the station for a year all of the vegitables will die!
One incentive to making it ad free would be that since the viewership is limited to AOL, the ad revenues would be less.
Golem looked a little jarjar like. I'm worried.
