I remember going through school with teacher telling me to study and take notes. That's where all this started for me: I was never taught how to study or take notes. Now I'm aware of SQ3R, SQW4R, OK5R, MURDER, OARWET, PQRST, and the other dozen or so nearly-identical study systems; I also know about Cornell Notes, three-column notes, and a few specialized concept maps. I've learned about Soroban mathematics and the transition from the Soroban to Anzan--arithmetic computed in your head faster than you can punch it into a calculator. I've learned about mnemonics fundamentals (visualization, organization, association), tools (rhythm, rhyme, acrostic, mnemonic numeracy), and systems (peg, link, PAO, mind palace). I've learned a lot about maximizing human efficiency in studying and learning--minimizing the time and sheer mental effort applied.
Wow, I just scribble stuff down and hope I remember some of it.
To learn to read you first need to be able to recognize letters. You don't start out by reading books. To learn to write, you start out by writing letters. You don't write books. Michelangelo didn't start sculpting by creating David in the first week. You need to put in the work and stop needing to be entertained 100% of the time.
But it is exciting learning to recognise letters precisely because you know that you will be able to read books at the end of it and not have to rely on your parents/teachers reading to you.
The world is not split in a binary way between "entertainment" and "horrible boring stuff".
On the lower-end, single prop airplanes can drop below the price of a house (~110k-200k). Any middle-upper class family could probably afford one.
Anyone who can afford to buy something as expensive as a house that is not a house is not "middle-upper class" (whatever that means). They are rich.
Your argument is like saying "you can buy a Lamborghini for the price of a house, therefore anyone with a half decent job can afford a Lamborghini". No, they can't.
There were warehouses found with thousands of chemical weapons that still had lethal potential. The anthrax bombs that were removed would be hazardous indefinitely.
If this were true, it would imply a ludicrously bad Public Relations job by the US/coalition. Why weren't pictures of these vast stockpiles of Armageddon devices published? Couldn't the military find a few friendly TV crews to video them and broadcast to an expectant public?
The truth is that Saddm Hussein didn't have anything remotely approaching the Doomsday capability suggested by Bush and Blair prior to Gulf War2.
In case you forgot, the nonproliferation treaty states that aside from the "nuclear weapon states" (China, France, Russia, the US and the UK), no other nation state should receive, manufacture or acquire nuclear weaponry.
Yeah, and just look at what happened to India and Pakistan when they broke that treaty and developed nuclear weapons! Oh, wait...
No, I think it's more that games often crudely reflect the sexism in society, that they seldom have credible female characters, and that it wouldn't hurt to have more non-misogynist games to balance things up.
But for the gamergate types, this equates to feminists calling for all shooty games to be banned.
One could make a case for Roosh V being a misogynist (and this coming from someone who takes him at his word that the piece he wrote about legalizing rape was supposed to be satire. It's wasn't good satire, but unless there are women coming forward to accuse him of rape, I see no reason to say he's guilty of anything but exercising his right to free speech, and I'm compelled to defend especially the ugliest of free speech on principle)
The whole "right to free speech" thing is irrelevant.
People have the right to publish works glorifying child abuse, genocide or Clippy the Office Assistant, it doesn't mean that they're exempt from debate or criticism.
If you decide to exercise your freedom of speech by saying that rape should be legalised, you can expect a strong reaction, and not just from radical feminists.
First they came for the trolls...I didn't care because I wasn't a troll.
Then they came for the terrorists...I didn't care because I wasn't a terrorist.
Then they came for the guys with ironic beards...and I started caring.
Trolls can be amusing, terrorists can sometimes be genuine freedom fighters. But there is never any excuse for ironic beards.
Tell that to the victims of abortion clinic bombings.
I can't even remember one of those happening here in Canada, and if I remember right the last one in the US happened almost 30 years ago.
Three people were killed in a shooting at an abortion clinic in Novermber 2015.
And, no, it doesn't make any difference that it's not a bombing, terrorism is terrorism.
The point is not the number of actual murders, it's more about the underlying beliefs of a significant minority of Christians and the lower level day-to-day harrassment associated with the issue.
"ISIS accounts are hunted down and extinguished" Instead of hunting accounts they should be extinguishing the head choppers, suicide vest wearing, and AK-47 carrying psychopaths.
You seem to be confusing Twitter admins with military Special Forces.
when the whole world communicates with about 2 total services
The problem are not Twitter's policies, the problem is we rely on 2 services, that happen to be proprietary and non-compatible with competitors, effectively preventing competition to appear.
The whole point of the internet is that you are not limited to mainstream, officially approved or commercially motivated services. If you want to communicate about terrorism or child porn or hiring a hit man or anything else that is illegal, you are free to give it a try, but you really can't complain when large mainstream companies won't want to touch you with a barge pole.
The internet is not limited to Twitter and Facebook. I use neither service, but strangely I don't feel like I'm being censored or repressed.
The correct answer to people spouting bullshit is to call out their bullshit. Don't silence them by squelching them, silence them by showing them that they are wrong, that they are not the "vocal minority that dares to say what others only think", but that they are a loudmouth few who babble what everyone else knows is BULLSHIT.
ISS don't use Twitter to engage in debate with their critics, it's just a propaganda and recruiting tool.
Trying to have a rational discussion with psychotic fascists is pointless. You are never going to convince them they're wrong. It's like arguing with a Nazi on whether or not it's a good idea to exterminate the Jews.
I see absolutely no reason why anyone sane would want to give them any help at all in promoting their message. You can't stop them publishing their crap on the internet anyway, but if you're a company like Twitter you really don't want to be associated with them in any way.
I've seen people reprimanded for not working the shift that they are expected to work, including a couple of people that were early and expected to leave early. Coverage was expected and not working the assigned shift messed with that.
Shiftwork is different.
All the smug morning people here should try doing a job where they have to work night shifts.
What does that mean, cleaning my living habits. I want to learn more!
Not regularly drinking yourself into a stupor until you pass out at four am and wake up with a traffic cone on your head in a pool of your own urine, I imagine.
Morning people are generally boring bastards. They actually choose to start meetings at ridiculous times like 8am, and ruin things for the rest of us.
5 + 7 is 12. How do I know? Because I have the sets {(1,4),(2,3)} and {(1,9),(2,8),(3,7),(4,6)} memorized
To paraphrase Byron, I wish you would explain your explanation.
Anybody on /. think he's a genius?
Anybody? Don't be shy.

Whoever modded this flamebait needs to look up the word "sarcasm" in his dictionary. If he can read.

Musk seems to be assuming an order of magnitude improvement in battery technology for all his investments... maybe he knows something we don't?
Yeah, he knows how to bluff.

Also, I have to say that the "benefits" Europe gets from US lead wars in the Middle East are rather dubious.
Well, it's provided a useful boost to the arms industry at least.
the US and UK used to be quite mad - willing to start 2 world wars to contain Germany for no benefit to themselves
That is an...unusual perspective on the first half of the Twentieth Century.

don't forget Eric Harris
Why not? He doesn't deserve brain room.

If the majority of Muslims supported Daesh, Iran, Syria and practically the whole of the Middle East would be under their control by now.
It is absurd to equate Islam with Daesh.

morning people also like to point out people who "show up late". "Geez, Bob, it's past 10. You're just coming in?!"..
More like:
Oh, good AFTERNOON Bob, har har har.
Morning person time is having a meeting at 5:30 or 6:00
Not all of us live in the US.
What does that mean, cleaning my living habits. I want to learn more!
