I don't have or watch tv. I have a comfortable life as do those around me. Food is cheap, most things that you can buy are relatively cheap, historically wise. Housing is cheap if you don't live in a major city. Even education is cheap when adjusted for wage premium.
What do I have to gain by revolting?
And the vast majority of people in the Matrix were similarly content.
|NO. They should not show any ads at all. On the one side you have people who do not want advertising. On the other side you have companies that want to have adversiting 100% of the time if not more.
Saying that you agree with part of it is discussing the amount. For me that amount is 0. I do not want it on tv, on the streets, on my underwear. I do not want it.
I understand that it excists. I understand that Ebola exists as well. That does not mean I can agree with 1% people dying from it instead of 10% (or whatever the numbers are). I want that number to be 0. I want the number of ads to be 0.
Advertising is an inevitable part of consumer capitalism.
They don't form protective organizations. In fact, they're often anti-union
Wait what? The reason they're anti-union (in california anyway, assuming you can even find anti-union folks here) is because the unions go all out to protect even the bad teachers, to the point of preventing the school districts from firing teachers for some truly outrageous and inappropriate behavior. They'll sometimes even shame the good teachers for making the mediocre ones look bad by contrast. Nothing to do with this Randian stuff you seemingly pulled out of nowhere.
So no teacher has ever been fired where there are teachers' unions? Really?Should be easy enough to demonstrate.
In fact, unions "protect" both good and bad employees, for the very simple reason that they both have the same fucking rights.
I'm a hunter / gatherer / pathfinder in a society with a large majority of settlers & farmers and every patch of land mapped out and explored already.... Which is why I'm into computers, art and other frontiers.
Yeah, blah blah, you're a special sparkly wolf and the rest of us are sheeple.
Sorry, but being socially awkward does not mean you're autistic.
Genuinely autistic people do not function socially at all.
Faking social behaviour is something that everyone does to some extent or other, it's not limited to self-diagnosed Aspies.
The whole "autistic spectrum" thing is about as meaningful as a "schizophrenia spectrum". Everyone has some element of autistic or schizophrenic behaviour is you look long and hard enough.
I was going to post AC as this will be down-modded to something approaching minus infinity, but sod it.
Here in socialist Britain a certain payday loan company used to charge 5 853% APR [*] (although they have now slashed that to 1 509% because of the unflattering publicity).
But opportunity costs aren't *real* costs that get posted to a ledger
Not in double entry bookkeeping terms I suppose, but if a credit card company gives you an interest free loan of $x there is certainly a real cost in economic terms, as that $x could have earned them actual interest.
My wife is addicted to them. Fortunately though she is a complete miser when it comes to spending money on things like this so she hasn't spent a cent.
Basically to say that science is "settled" is to close your mind to any other options/variations and forgo future enlightenment on the subject. In short, it's dogma.
That is simply untrue.
For example, I think it is pretty much settled that Shakespeare was a great writer. That doesn't mean you can't criticise elements of his work, or find new subtleties in his works or discover something new about him in the future.
But it's fantastically unlikely that in fifty years time everyone will decide he was a useless poet and playwright.
in the British courts truth isn't a defense against defamation
Peopole on the internet always say this, but it is simply not true. Truth is always a defence. The problem is that if you are sued for slander/libel, it is up to you to prove that it is true as your defence.
If I say "Politician/famous person X is a child rapist, murderer and Chelsea fan" I had better have very strong evidence to back up my claim.
thats sure to entertain some 300 pound navel-gazing white trash single mom for at least the 30 minutes it takes to chug a soda and finish a cold pizza
Why would you ruin a perfectly valid critique with this kind of insulting, racist, classists nonsense?
Yeah, how dare he talk about you mom on the internets.
> why we haven't had one already

I don't have a tv. I feel like I'm missing out.
Don't worry, you're not. Television is only one vector.
There are no ads on the internet though. Just intelligent people having sensible conversations and exchanging free ideas and information.
Back when Safeway had its loyalty card program, a bunch of us would swap cards when we met up or had a party, etc.
Yeah! Fight the power!

we're sure I'm undiagnosed autistic as well
Yeah, you and everyone else on slashdot.
Why not just go to a doctor and get a diagnosis?
"We don't suffer from mental illness, we rather enjoy it."
I've yet to meet anyone who sufferes from actualy clinical depression who enjoys it. Plenty of mental illnesses are in fact illnesses.
Once you allow autism to mean "occasionally socially awkward" everyone can call themselves autistic and the word has become meaningless.
It's offensive to those who actually have to deal with real autism.
a different mode of thinking as provided by autism can have major advantages
Yeah, it appears to give you the ability to totally divorce yourself from reality. Saves money on drugs, I suppose.
Yeah, I'm sure an Anonymous Cunt on the internet knows better than the parents and the medical professionals involved.

Oh how cute, another special snowflake.
Why does the mainstream society try so hard to cure human evolution?
When your teachers told you you were "special", it wasn't a fucking compliment.

[*] Yes, over five thousand per cent.

Is there something wrong with this whole system?
It's called capitalism: if you don't make them any money, why should they care about you?
I take it you've never been to London's "Little Mexico".
Two Chihuahuans in a flat doesn't make it an ethnic enclave.
" they cut off the power and they become a dead lift, impossible to carry."
And of course nobody can carry a 40 pound dead weight.
This is slashdot, not some bodybuilding forum, bro.
I've seen people here moan about the weight of a wristwatch.
What's to keep these from being carried to the nearest alley and a relieved of their payloads?
What's to stop you hijacking a parcel delivery van? Or mugging a little old lady for her pension? Or robbing a bank?
I've only ever played Candy Crush on an aeroplane
I always wondered what pilots did between the five minutes at each end for taking off and landing .
My wife is addicted to them. Fortunately though she is a complete miser when it comes to spending money on things like this so she hasn't spent a cent.
Sadly, she's stuck on level 6 out of 4,635,987.

How come they won't go after the drug cartels and release that data?
1. They probably don't think drugs are bad, and
2. They would like to remain attached to their testicles and kneecaps.
