  1. NikeNet on School Internet Program Audit Shows Fraud and Waste · · Score: 1
When I was in school, our wireless network worked very well unless you dropped the cassette tape as you were walking over to the other TRS-80 in the classroom.

The only hassle was the NikeNet had to be reinstalled every morning and was sometimes stinky after gym.

I have a 17" lcd imac at home. I would have preferred a more powerful machine but silence is golden if you live in a rathole apartment like mine. It has a fan (variable speed I think) but I have never noticed it before. As I sit here typing on my silent Titanium Powerbook, my work provided PIII is whining away like lawnmower in the background.

Gives a whole new meaning to "Fanboy" doesn't it.

  6. Re:Joke Science on Virginia MagLev Project Back on Track · · Score: 1
I can see this monstrosity outside my office window. It is a joke to many and a great embarassment to others. ODU is a small urban campus and the maglev line runs 4-5 blocks through it crossing a busy road that separates the main campus and newly contructed student housing and business district. It has one stop near the middle and stations at either terminus.

I think it was conceived as a showcase item more than a solution to a real problem. Unfortunately, it now stands a monument to bureaucracy.

Nitrogen narcosis does not result from a buildup of the gas but from higher partial pressures. Thus going deeper makes it more likely, but the effect is immediate if it occurs at all.

People spend days or weeks working at deeper depths than the scooter goes. You become "saturated" and have to undergo slow decompression before surfacing.
