I absolutely have to agree to this. The kneejerk reaction of the majority of slashdot posters is to trounce on anything that is popular with the masses, from microsoft and/or outside the realm of their own peculiar tastes like the codec of the day. I'm not sure why this is, but i suspect it has to do with the moderation system. Posters are trying to appear so much smarter and sophisticated than the "unwashed masses" and other posters are looking to appear so much smarter and more sophisticated than those posters. Posting this in the first place seems hypocritical but I have to come to Halos defense.
There are a lot of things going for the original Halo that Slashdotters tend to miss in looking for ways to be clever. People remark that the level design is repetitive and bland. I have to agree in the case of the Library. The original intent was to have the player see long arching hallways instead of having to wait at blast doors to move from one room to the next. The Assault on the Control Room and Two Betrayals used the same map to show the devastation to the environment of Halo caused by the Flood. Additionally, many of the rooms were just unnecessarily similar but this was offset by the differenct tactical scenarios provided in each situation.
All in all, the level design was thoroughly enjoyable even though many of the maps were similar. I can't call myself a "hardcore" gamer but I've certainly played my fair share of popular PC fps games and just thinking how repetitive and uninspired some of the levels were, but not every single moment of a good game has to be completely new. Halo isn't any worse than those games in that respect. The repetitive level fodder serves as a backdrop for the more epic battles.
As I mentioned earlier, Halo has a lot going for it but one of the thing that makes Halo stand out from the crowd is how polished and restrained it is. The weapons are powerful but you can't carry the firepower of an entire infantry division. On the easier levels, it is simple to just blast your way through the entire game, but on Legendary the game takes on a completely different nature requiring you to think tactically. I think a lot of the complaints against Halo come from people who never played it on Legendary because it was too hard or having to backtrack because they ran out of ammo from just spraying rounds in every which direction.
Maybe Halo just isn't your cup of tea. Maybe you just automatically hate anything because it's popular. Maybe you've only played Halo on Easy on a PC. Whatever it is, you people are missing out on a truly great game.
The phrase "ipod killer" means absolutely nothing now. It's just marketing hype. One has to wonder when "iPod" is going to be synonymous with "digital music player"
...is that my life expectancy in combat is around a few minutes when the officers run off rampaging without giving anyone orders leaving me to get killed trying to follow them.
from http://imdb.com/title/tt0093779/quotes:
[Vizzini has just cut the rope The Dread Pirate Roberts is climbing up]
Vizzini: HE DIDN'T FALL? INCONCEIVABLE.
Inigo Montoya: You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
I'm a CS senior in college and I've gone through a dell inspiron, a toshiba portege and now have a 15" Al Powerbook. I've built several computers and fiddle around with them constantly so I know computers. So when I say the powerbook is the best computer I've ever owned, I mean it. It's not a tablet and battery life sucks but I never have needed to use it for more than 3 hours without having access to a wall socket and the adapter is one of the smallest ones I've seen out there so you can't really complain about lugging it around. The primary feature that really sets it apart from the crowd is OS X. Since it's based on Unix you don't have to fiddle around with installing Cygwin or Latex. I do most of my Math homework and term papers in TeX. Apple's X11 user app is a really nice way to connect remotely to the lab computers using SSH. I haven't used xcode much but it looks promising for programming projects. You don't really need MS Office for your own work and if others want to send you a document they just need to "Print to File." Having said that my friend has a Compaq tablet he bought after dropping his Thinkpad multiple times. It seems fine for him but everyone who I've seen playing around with it has ridiculed him about how awkward the writing input is. You'd probably want a tablet to take notes on or doodle in class, but you're better off typing into something like Emacs or Outliner. You can use TeX syntax for taking down equations but you'll probably have a little trouble with diagrams. I think one of the bundled programs is a flowchart app though. The 12" is a lot cheaper and lighter but has fewer ports, no backlight keyboard, and a lower quality lcd, but it's probably a more appropriate alternative to a tablet. Be sure to get a student discount. You can probably save yourself at least $200.
P.S. get the Bluetooth mouse if you go with Apple. It is much easier to use than the trackpad.
I think his accusations are unfair and unfounded. The author ascribes the actions of a single person to the entire community. I for one as a Linux user would never consider writing and using a virus to protest the actions of SCO and I am pretty sure that the majority of linux users wouldn't. That only one MyDoom virus has been written so far attacking SCO should be proof enough that Linux users everywhere aren't a horde of evil hackers. There is of course the tendency for a journalist with more style than substance to mistake sensationalism for informative news. If he were responsible he would not pass his own opinions off as fact.
Funny you should say that. That's all I've been using for the past week.
Put me down for 20 on Texas
I've been using this as a reference since college. This has been out for years.
That depends on if you also got him a building permit.
I second that... (please don't kill me)

a copy of Lysergically Yours?
It's more likely that a large oil company would buy the private company, patent it so no one else could use it then shelve it indefinately.
Damn, my mod points expired last night. Someone mod parent up funny!
This is why I love slot loading CD/DVD drives. My parents can't destroy them as easily... ... of course there's also the "Insert Disc 2" problem.
Not exactly a tablet but...
