After all it's not FREE when you have to spend time being agravated and dealing with the mountains of annoying FLASH Ads on your page all the time!
The business and advertising people need to adjust to the Net-Citizens requirments, NOT the other way around!
They (business & ad agencies) need to stop thinking that the average person is or should-be concerned about how much money businesses and ad companies make.. PERIOD!
As in so many other facits of life today.. The-System is stacked against the individual, so that leaves us little options... but we do have some.
1) Continue to support (even by paying for good browsers. The OPERA browser does a great job of blocking pop-ups.. and it is SHAREWARE like.
2) Fight companies like MacroMedia, who are fraudulantly advertising that you can *stop* their ad by taking the time to set certain switches in their annoying animations, when in reality, you can't (because you still get the same ads from the same companies after you request them *not to*!
And btw, MacroMedia is another one of those companies that don't even have the courtesy to respond with a *robot* mail system, telling you that they received your email--- let alone respond by a human (maybe no humans work in these ad agencies..:)
I'v realized that alot of companies (ie in radio especially) PURPOSEFULLY dont' respond, because that is a FREE way for them to get a view of *Market* responce when they do or don't do something.
In other words, for every person like me that calls up to *complain*, they know that there are X amount of other people listening, or are pissed, based on a ratio system.
Usually I don't respond when I hear or see something in the media, because I know that this is what the scumbags at the marketing companies are doing. However sometimes you have to (like when I needed to find out why MacroMedia would NOT block ads that I requested) test-the-waters by emailing them at least once to see if they are a *concerned* corporation or not.
3) Continue with open software projects to development alternatives to MacroMedia types. And continue to support hackers (i mean programmers..) who figure out wayz how to *give-it-back* to the bastards (ie. Ad agencies and companies that use them).:)
Your idea of writing-your-congressman will have just as much effect as the *Ban-The-Bomb* buttons did back in the 60's.
We are up against illegal forces in the government and assorted undertainment industries-- who *THINK* they hold all the cards.
The Fluff (like your talking about), or *stopping* what we are doing, are not only NOT going to change these scumbags in power, but it's not an option for the Citizens of Earth.. PERIOD!!
Now these *forces* are resorting to tactics including scarring and putting little children in jail and ruining their lives, for downloading legal data.
Now because these *forces* are using violence (being arrested, jail, and all the assorted activities that go with this course of action, it is only fair to say that any opposing side (ie joe consumer, hackers (I mean programmers..) can hardly be expected to *resort* to the same tactics, since *The-System* is siding as-usual against the individual.
However I personally am not against using the same actions against the recording industry, and their co-conspirators/supporters, with the aid of deputised citizens, posses, assorted gang-type -- sudo-vigilante antics!!
Although I do admit, that hopefully, simply continueing on with the likes of torrents, etc, will probably be enough to cause the old-guizers in power at the likes of the RIAA to have a stroke and drop-ded first.:)
Think about it, who would risk being *known* if you were a hacker (good or bad)?
As far as those that would do it for *fame*, well, I think that would fall more in the model of *script-kiddies* would run and boast at their middle-schools, not the army that is attempting to bring the dragon down.
Remember, ms is *good* at being bad..
So if they did devise a scheme to *act cool* and invite everyone to try owning their systems, it would only be to try and get info on who the dangerous hackers are out there, and what they are capable of.:)
I tried to contact them twice in the last year (once in the last month after the NyTimes had a big article on what Aol was up to).. but still no responce.
There situation is typical of most rich people/corps.. they are fat, and they aren't going to anything the don't want until they HAVE-TO.
The problem with that is, alot of people cut-their-teeth with aol and still rely on it for their internet access. So not only do the share-holders have a say, but the average person who has an affinity for Aol, or is in *need* of it for net access, has a say as well. After all, if they were to *go-under* in alot of areas, many people would have NO access!
Unfortunatly, aol executives don't believe this way.
My advice to them was simple:
1) STOP giving your services away (ie. like they are now with these paid services that they are currently ABLE to get a paid subscription for, but have decided to *give-it-away*.... great idea!! (not).
2)Instead of giving people 1 or 2 months *free* internet access, charge at least a couple of bux. This would not only *stop-the-bleeding*, but it would actually help them to *make-money* (something they have LONNNG forgot the meaning of). It would also stop the people who just use the service freely with absolutely no intent of paying down the road. Not to mention the money it would save if they stopped sending those stupid cd's to EVERYONES mail box several times a year! Or maybe just send the cd's to areas of the country that lack net access (or competition of).
3) Invest and work with local and regional companies/governments on setting up WireLess nets (since this is where the future is apparently). And drop the fraudlent advertisment of *HighSpeed* connections over copper (noone likes to be lied to blatently).
4) This is the most important one of all; when someone writes.. out-of-concern and affection for your company.. at least have the courtesy to have a robot mailing system reply so that you know they got the email! It is the RUDEST thing in the world to ignore someone when they *vent*, but it is absolutley illogical and imature to *not-even-respond* when someone is trying to help.
I'm asumming tho, with the other aspects of Aol's *attititude*, that they simply ignore emails, just like other major media outlets do.. simply because they only want to see how many people *respond* when they do/don't do something, and then calculate/factor that into their *marketing* figures to try and guess how many people are listening/looking at their programming.
The mac/usb addy on the modem is the id that comcast uses to let you have internet service..ie, it is the ONLY one *they see* (if i'm not mistaken, they wouldn't care what you have beyond their modem/gateway (mac addy).
The Motorola Surfboard 5100 (one of the brands they suport/lease) DOESN'T have a firewall, just dhcp (if you want).
If you *change* your modem (or mac address), you have to tell them so they can make a note of it-- so you don't loose syncing w/ their network.
Then again, this might piss them off (asking them).. and they may just-say-no to the idea, especially if you are 'renting' their modem (gateway).
or were you talking about *spoofing* your own mac addy?:)
ok, I didn't say they were perfect... but even if they were nasty, it wastn' with the little guys beginning to buy pc's. I guess I just like to reminisce:)
But please do explain how the rise of m$ helped to *straigten* them out (ie, change their ways)?
I dunno why, but IBM has ALWAYS been a company that I didn't see as a monopoly, or threat to culture, like m$.
Remember they wouldn't crack or cowtale to gates on OS/2 (thank God!). Even though everyone suffered because of m$ since, I respect Big Blue for 'doing-the-right-thing' in not being part of the crimes of m$.
IBM along with Apple and the Lotus Corporation (remember 123?!:) actaully preddy much single handley got the word out about how wonderful computers would be in everyones hands.
It is therefore safe to say that we could have done without m$ crap, and infact the world would have excelled (scuse the pun) without it, instead of still waiting for LOOOOOOOOONNNNG Horned.
Ahhh, the good'ol days of Charlie Chaplin (remember the commercials from IBM?!) http://wso.williams.edu/~dgerstei/chaplin/myscans/ ibmcharlie.gif (sorry, it was all I could find quickly:(..the wonderful MacinTosh Desktop, and what is considered the main reason people started buying pc's in droves initially..*Lotus 123* SpreadSheet/Calc program!!
I remember the true stories of peopel not even knowing that they actully needed a pc to run the program, they just went into the old ComputerLand stores and demanded a spanking-brand-new: *Lotus 123*!
I remember living in Boca Raton FL during that glorious error.. and walking through one of IBM's factories there.. they were (and i'm not exagurating) nearly a mile long.. filled to the hilt with ROBOTS that were building the PC's!! It waz amazing..
Soooo, Ibm has had to re-invent itself many times before...and that is ok, cuz that is what people (corps) do in order to stay in business.
And now.. the OSS Communities get to not only benefit from this **Classy Company**... but get to contribute and be a part of it.. in defeating the evil dragoon..:)
This article seems to be just adding to the m$ fud, when it implies that computers are not easier to use than 10 years ago.
AHHND, even if so, who still has nearly 100 % of the desktop market?
The more I investigate and use linux (and other unix brands), the more I see where *Choice* is such a benefit, not only to my computer/work/study needs.. but in *EASE* of use.
For instance, I JUST realized (after about a year of fumbling around) that Knoppix was very well designed.. but for just two things-- a swiss army knife, and to show off to your friends/ colleagues how qoool linux was.
BUT if you figure out how to install it to hard-disk, you better be prepared to do alot of tweaking possibly. After all it is a LIVE-CD, not an install disk!
Well, if a nerd like me can take soooo long to figure out something so basic, imagine the poor average joe!
But learning is good and an inportant part of getting to the point were you need to.
The fact that we can do so much more with computers, and faster, says tons about how easier things are today than 10 years ago, when you couldn't do most of the stuff we can today (InterNet, clustering, video editing for the common man, pvr, home networking, high-speed, satellite internet, etc, etc).
The continued growth of *different* linux distros, is the most positive thing to come about because it *allows* us to find exactly what we want, as many different distros we want, whenever we want! AHHHND, we can squeeze as many as these different copies of linux (unices) that will fit on our hard disk-- at one time!
Maybe what the poster/author of the article *meant* waz.. As far as the *norm* is concerned (ie m$), things are relatively not much better than 10 years ago.
BUHHHT even here I'll have to respectfully disagree, because *i'll be darned*, I still believe xp is much LESS intuitive than 3.1!!;)
You are saying that because the only program that is useful out-of-the-box with xp, IE is *easy* to use.
Yea, it's *easy* to get use(d) to haveing spyware and viruses gallor!!
ANYONE who claims the m$ commie gimic called xp is *easy*, is SIMPLY a *SIMPLETON*.
Linux comes with ooodles of programs that are not only FREE, but are advanced enough for all types of professionals to use.... SOOOO, why don't you go back to your copy of wordpad or m$ works and try to come up with a cohesive responce next time?:)
I JUST-REALIZED knoppix, as gooood as it is..IS really designed as a swiss-army-knife, or to show-off to people how qool linux is.
JUST because I figured out how to install knoppix (most any flavor will due), didn't mean that I was doing the *smart thing*.
Knoppix (almost always)does not fair-well on a *regular* hd install... period.
It's *OK*, buhhht, there are almost ALWAYS problems that need 2 b nailed down.
Funny, it took me about a YEAR to figure this out!
Now, I either just install Debian PROPER, slack or some other *pure* linux, and then tweak it *once-and-for-all, minus the problems that come with *Live CD* installs to hd's.:)
Do all the *pic & shoot* selections of programs NEED to be universal? That point doesnt' matter, as long as people CAN pick and choose their programs!
M$ doesn't have a *universal* way of doing this (ie you need to select links, use rar, zip, arc, or sort through mazes of web sites (links) to install stuff all the time (just like linux).
Maybe what you *mean* is you want linux to select programs for the average joe?
Either way, yast, mandy, synaptic and apt-get are about as thorough a programs you are going to get, and actually surpass much of the software(install progs) written for microsof.
AHHND the fact that there ARE more installation-program choices, gives people (linux) more ability to contour their os to their liking (try that with ms, right?):)
bittorent is for those who dont'wanna wait for the ftp's 2b updated.. ok?
it's not for everyone and it's defenitely not for those that are even more anxious than those that use bittorent!!
My experience with torrent is it is VERY slow in the beggining, but when everyone climes on (like obviously alllot will taday), the service really starts to pic-up.
Just think of the possitive.. while your waiting for it to speedup, you can troll summore here;)
From what we already have seen the (US) government do, or claim to want to do, it should come as absolutely NO suprise that they are anxious to implement such a program on everyone (except themselves).
There is such a blur as to who is more dangerous to us, the so-called terrorists, or the government.
And even more concerning, is that they may actually be one-in-the-same.
After all remember on 911, not only were there NOT any jet fighters nearbye nyc to protect it (in light of what happened in '91), but there was acually a call to: STAND DOWN to those that were several hundred miles away.
And how can anyone forget that look on bush's face when he was told that planes where attacking nyc & dc? I still can't put my finger on what his expression meant.. but it was like.. he was 'disturbed' or 'tormented'. But as we all know, not disturbed or tormented enough do *DO* anything about it for at least several minutes.
Osama was paid a Billion dollars to *beat* the russians in afghanistan.. which he did a great job..
So now we're are to beleive he is guilty of 911 and not a friend of the cia anymore, JUST because he said he was suprised that the buildings come down so quickly? Well I don't ANYONE who wasn't suprised that the buildings came down so quickly!!
We can only wonder how much money/help he is getting to *take-the-rap* for this *Crimes-Against-Humanity-Conspiracy*.
If we want to get to the bottom of this and help defeat terrorism, then we need to pray and try to convince bush to take a gun to his pickled hed asap.:)
the other way around when it comes to programs like Tor.
BUHHT..I dont' blame/. for *defending* itself against spam & flood attacks. This is only common sense. If they didn't we wouldn't have/.
And I can't see why anyone (even after reading ALL the threads) would act like/. is hypocritical.
If you RTFM (/.'s) you'd see that not only do they speak-a-good-game, but they walk it tooo.
Censoring can ONLY be over come by MORE & LOUDER freedom of speech, period.
ANYTHING short of this will be giving in to the bad-guys... and that is the ONLY way they can win!!
I am always curious as to why people and the governments..always seem more concerned with what people *say*, then what they actually *do*.
Ahhhnd, I *think* I have part of the anwswer, which is, because *words* are everything..
After all, even before someone *pulls-the-triger*.. there is that *little voice* inside that *says* (do it! or DON'T DO IT!!), which then controls the actions of the individual..:)
Maybe this was a mis-communication on my part-- on what this part of the thread was about originally.
We (me too, in my reply) were talking about/. HAVING to control people who were FLOODING the network to the point where everyone would be affected. In other words, to the point where/. was not useable (it happens with dos attacks, etc u know..)
Now I don't know about you, but I would prefer if/. stopped those (spamming/flooding) arswholes, this way we (you & I) could continue our discussion.
Why would'nt anyone defend themselves like that? I mean, it is common sense! Why would u let the *spammers* control/.?
And as far m$ interfering with places like/., linux, or whatever else they see as a threat.. then actually you would be considered *more nuts* by professionals, by claiming that this would be un-heard-of (like you implied):)
And you can't say: "whatever the community decides", cause although that may work for THE COMMUNITY, it is not nescessarily good, fair, legal, moral, or whatever, and because of this, it will continue to morph (as it should).:)
allow people who *FLOOD* or spam to the point of interfereing, be-aloud-to?
Exuse me, but if someone *interferes* with my ability to talk (like the spamers/flooders were with/.), then I have a right (natural reaction) to find away around that.
I would say that the moderation and steps taken by/. to stop the spamers, does more to help (us) all talk, instead of those clowns who dont' like/.
Let them (spammers/flooders) go form their own/. if they dont' like it... or, they can *keep trying*, and/. will keep trying, and the best-man-will-win!:)
What I am investigating, is the theory that bill-gate$-the-turd-junior is behind these attacks.
'Imminent-Domain'
Sooooo I say:
For the economic *betterment* of our communities..
In the spirit of *Capitalism*..

AHHND the fact that there ARE more installation-program choices, gives people (linux) more ability to contour their os to their liking (try that with ms, right?) :)
bittorent is for those who dont'wanna wait for the ftp's 2b updated.. ok?
it's not for everyone and it's defenitely not for those that are even more anxious than those that use bittorent!!
My experience with torrent is it is VERY slow in the beggining, but when everyone climes on (like obviously alllot will taday), the service really starts to pic-up.
Just think of the possitive.. while your waiting for it to speedup, you can troll summore here ;)
From what we already have seen the (US) government do, or claim to want to do, it should come as absolutely NO suprise that they are anxious to implement such a program on everyone (except themselves).
If we want to get to the bottom of this and help defeat terrorism, then we need to pray and try to convince bush to take a gun to his pickled hed asap. :)
the other way around when it comes to programs like Tor.
BUHHT..I dont' blame /. for *defending* itself against spam & flood attacks. This is only common sense. If they didn't we wouldn't have /.
And I can't see why anyone (even after reading ALL the threads) would act like /. is hypocritical.
After all, even before someone *pulls-the-triger*.. there is that *little voice* inside that *says* (do it! or DON'T DO IT!!), which then controls the actions of the individual.. :)
Maybe this was a mis-communication on my part-- on what this part of the thread was about originally.
We (me too, in my reply) were talking about /. HAVING to control people who were FLOODING the network to the point where everyone would be affected. In other words, to the point where /. was not useable (it happens with dos attacks, etc u know..)
Now I don't know about you, but I would prefer if /. stopped those (spamming/flooding) arswholes, this way we (you & I) could continue our discussion.
Why would'nt anyone defend themselves like that? I mean, it is common sense! Why would u let the *spammers* control /.?
And as far m$ interfering with places like /., linux, or whatever else they see as a threat.. then actually you would be considered *more nuts* by professionals, by claiming that this would be un-heard-of (like you implied) :)
You (we) need to define a *GOOD* track record.
And you can't say: "whatever the community decides", cause although that may work for THE COMMUNITY, it is not nescessarily good, fair, legal, moral, or whatever, and because of this, it will continue to morph (as it should). :)
CHINX!! (lol).
Anyone who takes so-called derogitory terms personally, needs counceling/pills, or to be ostracized!
LEARN to laff! maybe we'd then *all-get-along* better!! =:O
allow people who *FLOOD* or spam to the point of interfereing, be-aloud-to?
Exuse me, but if someone *interferes* with my ability to talk (like the spamers/flooders were with /.), then I have a right (natural reaction) to find away around that.
I would say that the moderation and steps taken by /. to stop the spamers, does more to help (us) all talk, instead of those clowns who dont' like /.
Let them (spammers/flooders) go form their own /. if they dont' like it... or, they can *keep trying*, and /. will keep trying, and the best-man-will-win! :)
What I am investigating, is the theory that bill-gate$-the-turd-junior is behind these attacks.
