What was to happen at the end of these shenanigans? Once the lawsuit is over, where does SCO expect to get it's money? It's not like Microsoft will continue to invest in them once this crap is over.
And does this come out of the MS advertising budget? Any advertising against our competitors is good PR? There is no way MS could re-coup anything from this other than FUD points. Where's the incentive to profit?
This does not bode well for Apple. As a Canadian I know we have the "Blank CD-R Tax", which is comparable to the French tax. There are at least 25 other countries that have similar taxes.
If this French musicians rights group wins their case, this could set a precedent for other countries with comparable laws to sue as well.
As a musician, i feel embarrassed about this lawsuit.
On another note, cue the anti-french sentiment from a post-terror american centric peanut gallery... But at least this gives hope that the USA isn't the most litigious country in the world. Maybe you aren't #1 in everything after all.;)

Is there some sort of hobbyist lawyer nerd demographic that i am completely unaware of reading this site? Legalese thrill seekers?

Let's start the discussion by raising the concern that if the majority of users aren't tech savvy and society is dominated by technology, doesn't this sound like a new dark age? History has shown that when the peasant mass is uneducated, the church and monarchy rule. Are we not heading in this direction again? Technology being the new "power"? How long until the masses catch up and stop being screwed?
Has Microsoft become so jaded that they have turned to the dark art of trolling? Do they get some sort of perverse pleasure by fishing strong feelings out of educated people who know better just so their board of directors can laugh at the zeal of the rebuttals, knowing full well they were full of shit?

As pointed out elsewhere, there's a difference in supporting the freedom of speech and me facilitating the hardware for an opinion i can not agree with.
Well, I downloaded and installed this java client only to find out the Freenet is not yet searchable. I've read several articles about the freenet over the last few years but have never figured out how to find anything of value (to me) on it.
In fact, further reading of the FAQ states that if you don't want your node to harbor child porn, you should not run a Freenet node.
I'm all for freedom of speech but i don't support anyone who would take other's freedom away. Child porn is exploitative and robs children of their childhood. The concept of freedom of speech is only useful if it promotes freedom. For example, supporting the right of Nazi freedom of speech can only lead to the growth of a movement that wants to take your freedom away. Logistically, this makes absolutely no sense to me.
At the end of the day, the computer understands binary and that's it. In fact, languages are only a means for the human to talk to the computer. After a compile all the way down to the processor, the computer still only cares about two words: ZERO and ONE.
Just because a language goes extinct doesn't mean we lost an opportunity to develop better heuristics. It just means some programmers will lose touch with programing.
Currently, programing languages are based around english because the first programmers were english. If programing goes chinese, the only thing that will change is uni-lingual anglophones not understanding what is going on.
Of course this may change with biotechnology, but our current technology is still electric and i don't think it matters here.
I think it helps the game industry. By creating so much undelivered hype and anticipation the frustrated gamer will lose patience and buy another game. The only undelivered games people tend to care about are ones that have a previous track record.
Doom for example is anticipated because of the first Doom. By not delivering Doom on time, the young gamer will try something else and give 'new blood' a chance.
That googledorsk link... You're telling me if i put the word "googledorks" on my website and wait a few months i will be one because it appears in a google search?

Although I am happy that funds like this are reviving the human desire to develop more space bound technology, this x prize is to jumpstart the space tourism industry.
I see in my mind's eye several hawaiian shirt and sunglasses wearing citizens doing limbo and playing shuffle board on a double decker space bus. It just feels tacky and it is far removed from my utopian Star Trek TNG tendencies of space exploration.

Just yesterday, Microsoft was devising a plan to invoice spammers, now they are suing a spammer. Who needs the operating system business when you got hotmail!
9000 spam emails doesn't sound like that much. An acquaintance of mine is the developer of si20 and there's more spam than 9000 in a measly half a day of operations.
Is this merely a symbolic legal pursuit? Or is this considered a lot of spam by the powers that be?
Paying for postage already exists, it's called a fax.
This is the worst solution ever and the only reason that MS/Yahoo support it is because of Hotmail/YahooMail. They stand to make huge profits because they host the inboxes of millions of users. Every email received at those accounts would invoice the sender. It's a no brainer for BARRELS OF CASH !!! (tm)
In fact, there already was a good solution proposed a few weeks ago, by microsoft no less. Combine it with Spam Assassin the way Spam Interceptor does (replacing the C/R component) and the solution is plausible.
Wear an oversized novelty sombrero hat when using a computer in these cafes. California has a lot of mexican restaurants, geeks in sombrero hats will fit in very easily.
On another note, a 42 page legalese PDF isn't really my idea of News For Nerds but page 36 says:
"Some considerable space is devoted to refuting the idea that the city has required the video cameras to be pointed at the screens. Well, thankfully, even this majority understands that that would be too much. But then the majority go on to approve of the requirement that there be video cameras at the cybercafes with the ipse dixit that video surveillance is narrow tailoring."
So, it's not as bas as "The Importance of" makes it out to seem.
Has OS X, being semi-derived from FreeBSD, been a contributing factor to this growth? As a slashdot user, i see a lot of "FreeBSD is dying" trolls, but with a major computer manufacturer like Apple on the BSD train, this seems more false then ever.
However, the only thing i see in the article that could be Apple related is "shared key authentication interoperability with systems like OS X". To me, this doesn't seem like anything major in BSD source code contribution . In fact, Apple seems to give more back to KDE (i.e. Safari) than FreeBSD.
Does Apple help or hinder BSD growth?
