    Many modern phones already have this feature...set the default ring to silent.

    Could you please give me a few model numbers to look for? My phone has an alternate ring, but not a silent one. In fact the alternate is more annoying than the regular ring. Vtech, GE, etc?

    I solved this problem a long time ago. I just put my alarm clock on the other side of the room. It's loud, and I have to get up to turn it off. By the time I get there, I'm too awake to go back to sleep.

    Maybe it only works for me though...

    It's 56-bit DES, but it's better than nothing and would stop most thieves.

    I'm happy for these people, to be honest. I have a privileged f*cking head-start on life, just being born in the United States. Add to that the fact that I'm white, and suddenly I have a leg up on a lot of people, even though it shouldn't be that way. I'm glad to hear other people in the world are living well, instead of suffering--and I don't care how that happens, whether it's cheaper than me or not.

    I must say, this is one of the best comments I have read on Slashdot for a long time. Well said. Many other people, including myself, feel the same way. The more people living well, the better, regardless of nationality.

    No way. Regular POTS phone line, and only because DSL requires it.

    I understand your arguments against subscriptions, and I don't like them either. That's why I don't buy into them. A company doesn't want your $100 once, it's wants your $20 month after month for years. If people are willing to pay for it, the companies will take advantage of it.

    Of course I said 'if people are willing'. I am not willing. There are other individuals that are not willing. And that's fine. Other people can spend all their money. I don't care what they do with their money. I save mine, and when I retire, those people will have to keep working.

    Subscriptions are going to happen, even if they are just another money-grab. You just have to decide if you really need some new thing, or if you can do without it.

    Given a situation like that, I can understand why you would want to keep a gun. Although it's unfortunate that you have to live surrounded by such violence.

    It's not so much that other countries care what you do with your guns, just that we don't want guns in our countries. We don't have that same level of violence, so there is less need to defend against it. While guns can save lives, they tend to take more than they save.

    I believe the original poster was saying that we have no idea what reason(s) the search warrant was issued for. It could have been full of 'if ' statements, too. A warrant should be based on something other than speculation. Assuming they had some evidence to get the warrant, then I don't have a problem with it. I only object if there was no evidence and the government was abusing the law again.

    It's not. I agree with your post entirely. The VCR is just dead simple. I can burn DVDs on my computer, but who can I share them with? I don't know anyone that has a DVD player. Yet, everyone I know has a VCR. Common denominator wins, until everyone has a DVD player.

    Nope. That was the plan. The war was meant to drive up the cost of oil. Why? Because the entire world runs on it. Gasoline, plastics, etc. How many oil companies are making a fortune right now? Bush and his entire family are in the oil business. He's making billions right now.

    I think he's brilliant! He knew that a war in Iraq would raise oil prices, and as the President he can do what he wants. He doesn't have to answer to anyone. And every day the value of his bank account & oil stocks/bonds goes WAY up. Going to war isn't how I would like to make my money, but it doesn't seem to bother him.

    This point of view comes from Canada too, which happens to be bigger than your entire country. But so what? What does size have to do with courtesy?

    You don't have to agree with other people, but it's only polite to let them speak. Your country stands for free speech, but then you don't allow it?

    Before the smoke of the shot clears away, the REDOWL robot should have the shooter in its sights.

    If the sniper already took the shot, then you are most likely dead. That's what a sniper does. They don't miss. They take one shot and that is it.

    Sure, the robot could tell the other soldiers in your unit who just killed you, but you're already dead. I'd prefer a robot that could intercept the bullet before it hits me; even if the robot has to sacrifice itself by getting in the way of the bullet.

    Of course, a human life costs less than a new robot...

    People have lost their homes; some have lost family members. Do you really think some guy is going to give a sh*t if he has to use Internet Explorer to file a claim after he just lost his wife or child?

    I have heard a lot on Slashdot before, but this is a bit much. Can we all just put aside the constant browser war debate until after everyone stranded in New Orleans is safe?

    No need. My Z515 doesn't work under Linux anyway. And Lexmark can't be bothered supplying Linux drivers (at least I haven't been able to find them). Who needs to remove Lexmark from CUPS when CUPS doesn't work with most of them anyway...

    I'm sorry if my previous comment sounded a bit rude - I wasn't trying to be. I did understand your situation; I was just making a commentary on how companies abuse the customers that keep them in business.

    I work as an accounting clerk and I definitely understand the situation you were in. It's unfortunate. If it wasn't for all those double-entry bookkeeping rules, I'd personally stick with a spreadsheet :)

    It is definitely extortion, but

    You object to the extortion, but then submit to it? Take the company to small claims court and sue for every expense that you incurred just to get your data back. Big businesses that use this method to extort more money from loyal customers deserve to get sued. But I think they will continue to do it until enough people fight back.

    the whole thing froze up. Repeatably.

    Every computer occasionally has problems with a particular program. OpenOffice runs fine on my computer, but I have heard from lots of people that their versions crash. It happens.

    MS Office crashes on me any time I open a 65,000 row spreadsheeet containing customer data. I can't even run Photoshop on my PC without freezing the entire thing. These are limitations of my computer, not of the programs themselves.

    I wish my (Canadian) government would step up and make their own damn decisions, rather than follow every silly thing the U.S. government comes up with. Now it's DST; next it'll be DMCA, then bye-bye public health care.

    If the U.S. wants to change their DST, fine. Canada doesn't need to. Everything works fine here. It's not broke, so it doesn't need to be fixed.

    If you are reaching volumes that large, why not just stick with hard drives? Hitachi offers a 500GB hard drive now. Put two in a RAID 0 (striped) array and you have an extra 800GB of space. Or skip the RAID and just have two new drive letters...

    Since you probably have a high quality video camera and your wife probably has a top-of-the-line SLR camera, you can probably afford two new drives. Burning to DVD or CD will be cheaper in cash value, but how much money is your time worth?
