Well, I went online today for "no particular reason", and just happened to stuble across this article in my RSS reader. I wasnt out LOOKING for articles on how people waste time on the internet.....
(on a side note, i'm sure that those 66% that DID have a reason, that reason would be pr0n... oh wait, why the hell am I still on slashdot?)
I use desktop sidebar to subscribe to slashdot... I play World of Warcraft in windows mode so I can still see desktop sidebar... Both of these events where occuring at the same time... I guess that whole "task switching" thing works well in my head...
Comment posted, time to slaughter some more aliance care bears!!
They also have a rediculasly higher crash rate then without the software. McAfee and Norton are nothing but crash maniacs, at least from my personal experience.
what drivers where used? and what driver and OS configurations where used? and what about features? since a product has less features, it should have less to process, hence it running faster. how fast can windows 95 paint a window to the screen compared to windows xp? ya, i know, its a lame example, but its true.
UPnP brings about the same problems that the hardware/router firewalls try to protect you from... applications on your computer accessing the outside world. with exploits such as WMF (and stupid people downloading krap they shouldnt), these apps will exploit UPnP to open a port for itself, and most users would never even know. manually setting port forwarding features is more secure, but much more of a hassle for novice users.
Windows and Linux both come with IPv6 sollutions, as well as 3rd party firmwares for routers such as the WRT54G line (and derivitives). It isnt like VHS vs Betamax where you where forced to use one or the other, its like the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R, just get a system that does both at the same time.
It is now illegal for me to browse the slashdot web site, because in order to view it, my browser must "make" a temporary file on my local hard disc of the copyrighted slashdot logo. I hereby turn myself in for copyright violation.
whats annoying about the google toolbar, is that once its installed, it'll modify the "run" bar if you add one to your task bar. it'll prevent launching local applications, and isntead try to search on google for what ever you type in. i find the bar quite handy for typing in simple things like "notepad" or "calc" all the time. i have no idea if google ever fixed this problem, but its an annoyance enough that i wont be running anything that has the google toolbar at all. its even more annoying that so many applications come bundled with that thing now.
Agreed 100%. I, much like many of the users around here, love the new means of finding music online, such as great sites like Overclocks Remix and by bands such as Machinae Supremacy who publically give music out for free on their own.
everyone mentions OS's, and how they will handle. sure, they will handle easily, they can be patched, no problem.
what about my digital watch that accounts for daylight savings? my console video game systems and games with built in real-time clocks? my microwave? my tv? my alarm clock? over the years, these devices have become more complex to handle both date and time, and will automatically adjust themselves for daylight saving when needbe.
really, changing daylight saves will cause more problems then sollutions as far as i'm concerned.
speed has nothing to do with latencey. this is the theory behind satalite internet access. sure, you may have like a second or two of latencey, but if you are getting 100mbps download rates, you are still going fast as hell with merely slow turn around times. (granted, i dont actually know the true specs of current satalite internet, and this is a highly exagerated example)
AOL layed off most of the Nullsoft team, and the ones that didnt, quit. Why is AOL opening all of their software now? So they can get development for free. A few of the developers actually asked to open-source various of the Nullsoft products under the condition that they would continue to work on the projects out-of-pocket. So, is this a good thing, or a bad thing? I really cant say, because it does pain me to live in IRC with these guys for the past several years and to hear all about the internal workings of the company. As for the AOL side of things tho? I dont really know anything about them. I just feel for the guys that used to work for Nullsoft that no longer have their jobs with them.
Office 2003 already has XML saving support. From the sounds of it, this is one step beyond that. It will have the XML file, all included data files (images, etc) all within a ZIP file. I am personally pleased to hear this, because my Excel spreadsheets that I work on save to around 100kb in the XLS format, and about 1-2MB in the existing XML file format that Microsoft is using. They are in need of compression....
i thought it just made everyone racist?.... damn aliance care bears....
So besides drug screening, we should now "virus" (or in this case spyware) screen contestants as well? I AGREE!

but if you cannot run Aero Glass, there is no way in hell you are going to be able to run Halo 2. simple as that.

LiveJournal is already aware of this issue, and trying to do their best to prevent said issues within their system

Next thing you know, the MPAA will make it illegal to watch movies in your living room, because someone might watch the movie from the window.
you are forgetting, SUVs waste more resources then 100 commercial airplanes!
Piracey is good? - its a great read, describing what happened to the SciFi channel because of torrent downloads.

You bought Nullsoft, the creators of Winamp... and then laid off most of their employees. I'm sorry, but I will NEVER trust you again.
if it where not for the SlashDot RSS feed, i'd probably never read the news. thank you slashdot on my desktop!

What about ARM CPUs? they power virtually every portable device in the world.
