You seem to be a Microsoft employee so I would like to present this burning question to you, when I think of a Microsoft employee I picture a MIT grad being held at gunpoint forced to refactor solitaire. Is this a valid assumption?
One way to see if the client / server model fits is to ask the question "If there is no I teraction from outside the cloud what does the cloud do?". Likely it will sort data, build indexes and gather more data based on what queries it anticipates next. If that works for you then Cloud Computing == Client / Server Model
So your argument is that since their media department is funded better then the NSA to disagree with them only reveals futile ignorance? I think you missed a couple of steps somewhere....
Every time the 6 o'clock news talks or refers to public opinion that reflects what the polsters present. So when the news tells you a ban or a position is supported by X amount of citizens it is actually the numbers provided by the polsters. So it is quite likely that this data will influence how the news stations relate news storys to their audience.
It's really not going to help much cause you don't reall. Know how it should be modded because you are taking it out of context. Today is just like the chaos theory I guess mod'em as you see em:)
I completely agree with you that the governament taints business. The issue is that tax payees have been forced from day one to pay for the wiring and most of the infrastructure weather we had Internet / phone services or not. The communications industry is one that will continue to thrive for decades to come and the incentive is there to start selling they just need the wires to start selling. As a Canadian what I think we should be asking our politicians is why do we have such potiential for an industry and no one is able to join in and why are you the gate keepers. I personally believe while slightly idealisic that no o e should be able to own anything that is not on their own property. Once that cable leaves the back of the NOC it has to be owned by the people or who ever owns the soil above them. Now we pay almost $10 ontop of our monthly cell bills for the cell towers as a tax, an additional 1.5% of our cable goes to taxes as well and our infrastructure sucks. With the amount of money going into communications we should have fibre going to each house and a colo facility where any provider can set up shop. The inevitable paridigm shift is that tv, phone and Internet is now all digital and the next step is to consolidate all three into one service, this is what is making the industry panic. Instead of getting at minimum $200 / month for cell / tv / landline / Internet some 3rd party will and should claim a stake in wireless and wired communications and sell the whole thing as one for half the price of course this would kill the folks at bell and Rogers because their ARPU would be split in half. Through the 3rd partys they could offer a la cart tv serving them locally to all their customers once dowloaded from the content creator maybe even giving the residuals if the show becomes popular again in the future. Telephone service or voice communications is old as hell and could be implimented as an afterthought and internet will be the underlying protocol behind it all.
You've gotta be joking. Every windows install I've ever done comes with a generic driver and even a nifty message along the lines "Your display settings are at a lower resolution....." it won't give you directx (sililar to compiz) and the is gives you no help installing the manufacturers web site. You still have to know the manufacter and model of the card. On the other hand Linux just give you a story about how evil the industry is and still do it all for you. So with the ever popular time = money ratio Linux has the best ROI.
Actually if you take a look at the topography of the internet look at who has independent connections (Google, et al) and who relies on others for a connection (via ISP's) if they were to tell AT&T or anyone else for that matter to stop routing how would the internet continue to function?
Why ban it when you just have to stop using it? If you are worried about others then in reality you have to accept there is really fuck all you can do about it. Get rid of booze and people will make it in their bathtubs, get rid of pot or coke and they will grow it in their backyards. You have to realize what part you really play in your community and realize in the grand scheme of things you only have yourself. So if you find yourself innondated by people who don't see yor side of the coin lobby to have them kicked out or leave yourself.
I'm curious though you mention I might be surprised but with what exactly, not being facetious but I am curious. If I have app A running on XP and the same app running on Win7(on the same hardware) what is the difference? Most business apps are database driven anyway so how will it benefit me? Don't forget the idea of the OS is just to have a middleman between my application and the metal so I can run multiple apps on the same box with out them running over each other. Most developers would be happy to run directly on the metal but things like dealing with email while updating data gets tricky. The idea about the OS being some sort of barrier is long gone, in reality any OS with even time slicing will work fine on today's hardware or even hardware from 5 years ago for that matter. Aside from gaming which is just an updated api anyway for business there really is no reason to change client side OS's unless you can provide me one?
If you recommend a system running already on XP should be moved to 7 you're gonna kill them. Most businesses have custom programs and really no need for anything but the kernel and libraries on the system. Getting a business to change isn't really helping anyone. With businesses for the most part running 2GHz workstations w/ 512-1GB RAM in this case I would really have to say if it ain't broke don't fix it. Wait till Win7 is out for a few years and see if anyone comes up with something important for business but til then save the money and beef up the servers.
XP is really a decent OS as well as 2K as long as their virus free and maintained you really shouldn't have any problems with it. If Win7 takes off like Vista was supposed to then hopefully we will come up with a better way of doing things then we are now but swapping out the XP kernel for the Win7 just to run the same programs is nothing more then a junior BOFH's wet dream and some managers nightmare.
This type of argument that people who are willing to do something for nothing is going to kill off everything is a joke. No one has ever stopped anyone from putting a login and price on their site. The funny thing is I have such a hard time believing the stuff that all these moguls are throwing at me, it actually is worth my time to sift through multiple accounts of something before I start to really understand it. We have reached the point to move on.
With all the money these companies have they could come up with something can't they? Have they been missed an opportunity? Has anyone sat them down in front of a computer and showed them the internet? Who ever wants to make a profit is and always has been free to put a price on anything they want, what's stopping them or you for that matter? Have you ever thought that they are not producing something people want to buy?
You might say getting the news for free is starving some but they have stopped producing something I want to buy into. I actually find myself fortunate because now we can start getting the raw information straight from the source.
Their dollar signs will ring their necks, I'm just here for the show.
You are correct more noise does not contribute to better entropy, distribution and change over time does. I only suggested sampling the data at it's 'richest' points which would be during office hours or in areas where people move and talk. Random numbers are just that how can you say 3 random numbers generated at 3 different times are any less random then a random number generated at a given point in time? The sources of entropy are the most important and while the hardware you mention is professional grade it doesn't degrade the fact that any non-deterministic source of entropy can be considered good entropy. As you know the idea is to not follow a mathematically / statistically identifiable seed to give harder to guess keys. Since all of this hardware takes its various sources of entropy at one given moment you are only getting a seed based on the state at that given moment in time which after all the hard work still only comes up with one number, random as it may be again can you say one random number based on non-deterministic entropy is more random than another? I know its a bit of devil's advocate but it is intriguing if to no one then to me.
As far as not being able to set permissions or provide security to data well if you went this far to ensure a secure key you should have enough expertise to be able to set your permissions. In case some one on the internet intends to use this as bible I would like to inform you to learn security before you intend to implement it.
Don't forget each of these techniques vary by the quality of the hardware as well as it's sensitivity and spatial relation to the source of the stimulus . If I put a cheap mic in a high traffic area ( office / street ) with an addition of white noise (salt) and generation of keys limited to traffic hours you could get a decent seed. Make a large number of salted seeds when you can and salt again per host.
While you are right that using these methods for realtime key generation could be predictable generating many when the data is rich is still a better than most approach.
Don't kid yourself into thinking "bullies" don't still exist even after all this violence apparently stops. You just become manipulatable and it's showing up more and more in society as you can see in politics with the people getting left out of much of the process.
Probably to mess up your phone if you don't buy directly from apple. I could definately see them wiping your jailbroken phone after connecting to iTunes.
It's likely because of the.climate change in the region being at the right balance. In one hand the polar regions have a massive density of water. In the other hand we have a warming climate. What are the chances that the surface temp is high enough for vapour to rise in enough quantity to collect in a central area above the poles? Maybe as the air thins it pulls the water particles appart spreading them out? With all this ice melting as the surface warms gradually the vapour may remain fairly cold as it rises cooling the atmosphere and suspending the water in mid air? Maybe..
After using NoScript for a couple months I found an easier way to calibrate it. First go to a bunch of commercial sites
and set sites like Alexa and thelike to untrusted. I use it to blockost sites since most have a static fail over. Makes my browsing much faster and keeps an extra bit of security on my side.
I would like to apologize for being an asshole, I did go over the top. The reason I feel concerned is the element of scale. The only difficult part is figuring out the vulnerability once that is done they can out source because the money is there. There may not be a planet of computer elites with the ability to take advantage of this or any exploit for that matter but if the money is there to be made especially in the millions of dollars there is incentive to perfect the process. With that kind of money you could engineer something as simple as a 'mod chip' and with a hand full of people distribute your process, likely not even having to explain really what they are doing. As long as there is ROI people will do it without asking questions so they might not even know who is behind all of this.
I do agree that publicizing this is not the ideal solution, the sad thing is that Diebold / Sequoia was aware of the issue almost a year now and coming from a company with security minded products why is it I as the person the situation affects cannot do anything to avoid this situation? Is there a visual appearance of these particular machines I can use to determine if I want to take the risk or not? Maybe a visual screen layout? If so then I'm happy to let them do what they please but now that I am informed I want to make a decision based on that. The chance to do so is all I'm asking.
Your a fucking idiot. This is a computer exploit it's not like they have to be actively standing in front of the machine after each use. Once it gets hacked any person who walks up to it is giving their information to both their bank as well as the person who hacked the box. Your information may be next. The only thing that prolonging the disclosure does is keep those who do know in a captive market making money off me and you. If it does get out then banks will eventually lose more to insurance claims then it is worth doing business with Diebold, unfortunately that seems like the only way of motivating them to make a fix to a serious problem. You post like your not affected but next time you swipe your card you might be. Even though you will likely get your money back as with everything else it will likely be a hassle including being without your money for some period of time, filling out paper work and waiting for them to get back to you. Does that seem like a better plan?
After trying Chrome I found one thing that made the difference, extensions. On my machine 2.5GHz w/ 512MB ram surfing used to be pretty good but now with Slashdot's js and everyone else's for that matter it just slowed everything down again, same freezes as a page loads. My one out is ScriptBlock and AdBlock, Slashdot js gets banned as well as every other ad server and now my computer loads a 300+ comment in 1 second instead of 10-15. Just a FYI to the king Taco, it is NOT necessary to show your AJAX prowess by loading each and every comment after the pageLoad() one at a time. I downloaded the entire content with out JS and looks identical to the JS version in micro seconds. Hint: Load the content first then play with it via JS, we know your Uber cool trust us just let us load the page with out requiring some quad core w/ multiple GB of ram.
I think it's a cool idea, if you are able connect your cell phone to your network it does give the ability to use that service from applications(Astrix, IVR, Call Branching). It also makes it easier for other people in the house to call out with out having to ask you for your cell, as long as your cell is close to the blue tooth receiver. At the end of the day once you get all this set up grabbing a VOIP number will be too easy to ignore, you could even swap your cell # with the VOIP # having important calls routed to your new number. But for a band aid solution it would make a neat temporary fix.
