Has it survived natural selection? It doesn't need to.
They are not chosen for these positions because of their qualities (or lack thereof) but because those are the qualities uppermanagement wants to control. The vary qualities we mention, glib, superficial, grandiose sense of self-worth, these qualities are saught after. There are two reasons for this the first is the person giving the job is complelty aware of this and knows how to control people like this and if this person has these qualities then the underlings beneath him/her will be less likely to exhibit similar.
By doing this they are able to control the workforce, if an underling gets out of hand they can fire the PHB and make it look like a new chain of command exists.
It is very similar to the military or most other historical chains of command. What ever personaliy traits are vacant by the superior the group will exhibit, but if they choose to exhibit ones similar then that would be a direct challenge or conflict with the superior and the 'battle for the throne' ensues.
Most of these Psycopaths you mention are not by blood or by evolution but by ambition. Ambition has a good way of 'patching' gaps that the person does not natively have the qualities of becomming. For example a person who is not compassionate given the right incentive will be able to emulate compassion only to the expectations of the superior. This will take much more out of the person because they are overly focused on the task at hand and more likely to outburst then someone who is naturally a compassionate person.
This is also likely why there is so much depression today as the PHB's as they are called are there to make a type of balance, their only fear is that someone will challenge them and win, so they become agitated and are likely to start talking loudly as well as use some type of charm coupled with lies to regain control.
If that doesn't work most likely the person above them (who is the same way) will notice this and send PHB(1) out to graze and scout you for the same position.
If we follow this all the way up the only person who has any sight or love for thier job is....
When a company like Google goes public it's not just to be cool, or get a couple extra bucks. Those free things that Google gives out are for research, it gives the company the missing pieces in what they are really after. It's kinda like researchers giving a monkey a pair of pliers, they just give it to them to see what their automatic response is, if they offered food/treats may make the animal think there is a specific reason and leave it until instructed to do so.
Google is doing this to see what is done with it how we search, if we get directions how many of us are intrested in surrounding areas/countries. This information if brought together properly would give a seriously solid foundation towards new marketable inventions and systems.
Lets face it Google founders are up there in terms of intelligence and I feel would only go for an IPO if they had at least a 10 year road plan. They are no strangers to cash so they know how it is made and spent. They employ the top percentile of the worlds think power.
I believe that they have some pretty clever tricks up their sleeves, these next 20 years are gonna be fun...
Well if we assume all computers can only read electronic documents then would'nt even HTML be prior art?
The application does not specify that the user or something else is to initiate the display of data. An HTML file itself contains alphanumeric data and is "visually emphasized" by something as a 'P' tag, as the fact it is being displayed it is being shown to the user contrary to other data that is not shown at all. So if we compare the data not rendered to the data rendered, the data rendered is emphasized.
This is the same for word docs, or basically anything that discriminates in one way or another between visual data. Since all electonic data is numeric it basically covers all data, so even if all the data except the headder or field codes are not displayed the remainder of the numerical data is emphasized and translated to the user in a visual format.
There are some stupid claims though, for example from the application [Description 0004]:
For example, if a user is looking for the name "John" in a document, the user can easily modify the search string to match the desired string through a relatively small number of iterations. However, if a user is searching for a number that they do not already know, a telephone number for instance, it may be very difficult to locate the number in the document. The user may be forced to scan through the entire document until the desired number can be located. This can be very time consuming and frustrating for a computer user, especially if the document is a long one.
This would assume that the list is completely numerical. If you do not know the number or target you are looking for then you will never find it. Even if the program returns a value how would you know it is the right one? Agiain if this was true then it would be quite an invention sice we could toss relational databases out the window and just have a program that returns values. Imagine how much resource / troubleshooting that would save us all!!
I read the original article and it was just a Google fest surrounded on cookies to track info. Evrey search engine, most web sites and all e-commerce sites use cookies to track customers. Also the personal data they were talking about is free for all to index, much of it is indexed, not only by Google but MSN, Yahoo!, etc.
Google should be pissed ZDNet could have written a report about identity theft and morrons who post resumes with SSN's on them. That would have been more appropriate, rather than bashing Google for doing something that all the other engines are doing.
For example: 'If I am likely to have corporal tunnel then I should continue to type in an uncomfortable position until I get injured and be 'forced' to live off the fat of my employer.'
or
'If a person cannot do the job in the fashion we dictate then we must avoid hiring them'
I know this must make a great deal of sence to evreyone here, but instead of pluging your ears and throwing a tantrum why not just change the egronomics of the cubicles?
I think it is a bad idea to center someone out because of some genetic possibility, because with the bussiness mind set of today this will kill any business that tries it.
This is my reasoning:
In the workplace evreything is based on personalties. Your employer gave you an interview based on this. Employers if you have not noticed yet all have diffrent personalities and require an employee to compliment those. Some employers are very opiniated are require a legion of 'yes men' others are more one on one and require thinkers to work with them, others are just plain dumb and need all the honest help they can get.
Now picture a society where evreyone is registered or required to prove certain gentic charasterics. They will likely require them before the initial interview (otherwise whats the point of collecting the data?). Doing this they filter out perspective employees before they know how they fit into the company as a whole. They then have a much more frustrating time with the remainder of the applicants that apparently (may)not get certain ilnesses fewer will be compatible with the managerial structures. The bussiness will still fail this time instead of sick days the people just arent working well together.
To break it down, its kind of like filtering out the genes in sports players and ending up with a soccer team of fat nerds;)
You seem to be very patriotic, congratulations. But please do not forget those bank robbers were getting before hand:
Durability. A solid book that was durable and salvageable, if it came in contact with water after drying most books will remain intact and legible
Manufacturing Costs. One could argue that the reason for such high prices of hardcopy books is the quality of the bound and cost to manufacture. Now there is no raw material but they still claim 2/3 of the previous price.
Future refrence. Once you graduate unless you use it you begin to forget aspects of your teachings that you paid so dearly for. Your only refrence are your notes and the books you studied from. Now that this is taken away from you and it is likely any comparible material will be completely rewritten as to justify more students paying more money. Your notes are just those, notes. Notes alone can help to jog some memory but no ones notes are so verbose that the text is not needed. That is why many refrence the manual or text as needed.
Notes. Now with EULA, notes can violate the agreement. If the notes were too verbose would you still be robbing the liquor store anyway via EULA?
Added costs. The content may be 1/3 cheaper but ontop is the cost of the device which if charged full price can make up for 1/3 savings on the content, battery power is costly if using disposable batteries, and if rechargable are used power is still consumed on the users dime per kWh.
Availibility. Hardcopy is availible at any time, any location and any length of time. That is 100% up time. Long bus rides or trips with out the ability to rechage will hinder studying quite a bit. Studying at friends places or public librarys may have some outlets, but not guarenteed to be availible.
Cross refrencing. How many times have you had more than one of your texts open while pulling info from both? This will likely be difficult and narrowing the advantage even further making it an actual hinderance.
Highlighting. A technique no doubt used by an overwhelming majority of students while grey scale screens are capable of showing contrast most will agree it does not get even close to a bright yellow highlighter.
Reproduction. While a full copy of any text is illegal, you are still allowed to photocopy a limited number of pages. Since an E-Book cannot be photocopied due to glare of the screen what options will be provided?
Resale. When the semester is complete you have the option to sell your text and recover part of your original cost.
So with out any thought you just call them robbers. You leave no alternatives, suggestions or supporting points. These students on the most part do not understand the purpose and realativity of the rules you so blindly follow and only method of recorse is to take with out paying.
They are telling the public (a la press release) that the M$ console is not really that big of a threat and is willing to wait while the paint dries on their product.
Apply this to the mentality of little johnny Uber-1337, 'whoa I better make mommy and daddy wait until the sony comes out before I throw my tantrum because they already know they are better then M$!!!"
This is all chess, its all about the moves... When some company tells the public something they are just that, telling you something. It has no warrenty, guarentee or even the assumption that they are telling you this in an unbiased whole hearted manner.
They like M$ and pretty much evrey other high roller company is just trying to fuck with as many heads as they can and hope for the best.
Actually I think this is what Linux / OSS really needs. People don't have any physical co-relation with OSS. Many people know about software companies by thier big empty boxes and big prices and ask around or look it up to become familiar.
I think it would not only be cool to goto a mall with a DVD-RW or pay a small fee for an in-house disc with silk-screening as well as locally contributed art work to label the case. I think this would boost public awareness as well get the local hackers stoked at making OSS games that their buddies and others can copy at the mall with their name all over it. They could even have a 'top title list' that would get people to check it out.
Depending on the software $3 per CD or $5 per DVD full of software / Knoppix type of bootable CD's would be awesome. Even a script that would install your chosen software on a Knoppix image to burn so all you have to do is pop it in your drive would be awesome to get peoples feet wet. Just pick the software, about 300MB/CD and it slaps Knopppix bootable OS around it that you could also use to install to your harddrive and configure / download what you need put it in a GCC blender and install that puppy properly to your current KDE/etc install.
You could write off / promote / free dupes to 3rd World countries. For 3rd World burner stacks could be donated by people who want to be associated and buy the disks in mass bulk with LightScribe or simmilar tech.
Then why doesn't any one impliment software that does? For M$ (outlook) and Google (gmail) it should be a matter of a day to get it into alpha. And for OSS we should be able to do the same thing.
There should be a panel or some area of the display that will inform the user of incongruencies of where the page claims to be from (ie et al) and where the links are going to. That way the app does all the dirty work of tracing the links and finding out who owns them. Eventually the phishers will use graphics to supplant the tags but since it would be fairly easy to compare logos of companies that could be incorporated as well.
Until they make their next move this will keep them in check.

As well it gives M$ a way to be more creative with its numbers. If a $250bn/year company takes 8 years to produce product X then M$ can use that number $250 x 8 to produce damages / loss / whatever they want.
