Post 9/11 due to fears of Norad having to figure out what the heck a jet is inbound off of the coast of Georgia( a newly rebuilt F-15 that might have a faulty radio could be a problem,) The F-15s now do their testing over middle Georgia ( near Macon ). Sonic booms can be loud. They shake the roof of some buildings pretty good. Never heard of any broken glass because of ( altitude of the test ? ) To me they sound more like a man made explosion ( like from an artillery piece or aerial bomb ) than the sound of thunder.

--- quote from U.S. Military And Economic Aid Report

In recent years, Israel remains the top recipient of U.S. military and economic assistance. The most commonly cited figure is $3 billion a year, with about $1.8 billion a year in Foreign Military Financing (FMF) grants from the Department of Defense and an additional $1.2 billion a year in Economic Support Funds (ESF) from the Department of State. In the last decade FMF grants to Israel have totaled $18.2 billion. In fact, 17% of all U.S. foreign aid is earmarked for Israel.

Israel is one of the United State's largest arms importers. In the last decade, the United States has sold Israel $7.2 billion in weaponry and military equipment, $762 million through Direct Commercial Sales (DCS), more than $6.5 billion through the Foreign Military Financing (FMF) program.

Duh? You think? This kind of flying is full of all kinds of problems. Of course that would be the question we would all expect from the local News at 5 info bimbo. "Like oh my gosh... This stuff is like really difficult..."

Get Over it. It's a test flight. Stuff like this happens. Engineering fly toys isn't perfect.

Example: Early test of the big engine to be hung on the 777. All the engineers said the computer sims and such said the new big engine was good to go. That it could be hung on the 777 for its first flight no problem. The boss over-ruled the engineers and played it extra safe. One of the big new engines was hung on a 747 ( with the other 3 of its engines being regular 747 ones ). Right after rotation, the engine starts stalling in the high angle of attack air. -bang- -bang- -bang-, So the first flight of the 777 could have ended up as a big smoking hole.

You try and be as safe as possible, and not kill your monkey pilot.... Even then; stuff happens. That flight yesterday was based on great engineering. It was still full of enough danger and isn't like going out and cranking up a Cessna 172 or something.

  22. Needs on Beyond Megapixels - Part III · · Score: 2, Informative

As mentioned, it is all in what you need it for. Many of today's consumer digital cameras are nothing less than outstanding. If you have had to suffer through the growth of digital cameras like I have ( $20-25,000 ) DCS1 Camera circa 1992 ( 1.5 megapixel approx ) and lousy color and contrast ) All you pukes :) should be thankful today.

Pros will always need large megapixel cameras. Example: Group shots, even then the industry is still working out bugs. The Kodak DCS n14 ( 13.5 megapixel camera )is awesome for group shots and such high detail / high enlargement things. Problem is that even with firmware patchs to it and its follow on model, heavy noise in the shadow areas makes it unusable for existing-low-light photography. An area that a 6 megapixel Nikon D1x or D100 has no problem in. Also as the high end systems are still very expensive, most pros have a narrow experience based on the few expensive systems they have / use.

A very excellent example of digital photography I have scene recently is a 100 years of Flight issue by National Geographic, all shot with a Nikon D1x ( 6 megapixel ) in Raw mode. Excellent photos. ( The Kodak 13.5 megapixel camera would have failed that mission because of all of the noise it still produces in the shadow areas.)

My current work cameras ( I am a USAF photographer ) are the Fuji S2, Nikon D100, Kodak 14n. This systems fit our needs ( industrial photography ). Having used film cameras for ages ( 8x10, 4x5, 120/220, 35mm ), I prefer digital cameras all the time now. Burning in and dodging, croping the digital way is a lot more fun and I find I can concentrate more on taking good photos.

  23. Re:Essential to Ending US Dominance on GPS vs. Galileo; Where Are They Headed? · · Score: 1

You don't want the job of GPS jammer in a war. If it emits it can be targeted quickly and die.
GPS jammers are not an absolute, think of weapons like the JDAM , as being GPS assisted.

The INS onboard will still do a good job of getting the weapon to the target. A fly time of 50 seconds from 35,000ft for the weapon means that there is very little INS correction needed. Especially if the INS location pumped into the weapon before release received refinement from the onboard radar on the jet ( B-1 and B-2 technique). GPS helps the JDAM but it isn't going to force the INS outside of a certain limit in case of spoofing. Being 3 or 8 meters from a 2000lb class weapon, still means you are dead.

One of the GPS jammers destroyed in OIF was taken out by the very weapon it was made to spoof: A JDAM. The method of encrypted military GPS signals and verification process is of course classified. The idea of hoping some GPS jammers will provide protection is not recommended.

Other target aids are becoming popular and don't depend as much on GPS assistance: The digital map/target recognition infared nose found on the Israeli "SPICE", and the very good upcoming French AASM ( modular kit for dumb iron ) means that a target can still end up dead in adverse weather without GPS assist.
