I visited Rottnest Island, just off the coast of Perth WA, and was happily wandering about when I saw what looked like a spiders web. It was pretty big, maybe 10 feet across, stretched between 2 bushes. So I went over to have a closer look. Imagine my surprise when I found the resident. This bugger was about 18 inches across (leg span) and pretty mean looking. I would have put my hand in the photo for scale, but, well you know...
Droughts far worse than the infamous Sahel drought of the 1970s and 1980s are within normal climate variation for sub-Saharan West Africa, according to new research.
For the first time, scientists have developed an almost year-by-year record of the last 3,000 years of West African climate. In that period, droughts lasting 30 to 60 years were common. Surprisingly, however, these decades-long droughts were dwarfed by much more severe droughts lasting three to four times as long, scientists report in the 17 April issue of the journal Science.
The luddites turned out to be wrong about the industrial revolution, so as we stand on the precipice of the next revolution we should be wary of... well... ludditism.
Did they really ? All the Luddites said was that machines would put people out of work - they have, they did and they do. They may not be vast textile mill machines these days but instead computers are the enemy. Most manual labour is so basic as to almost be worthless. Take a look at the wanted ads some time. More and more jobs are make-work jobs where some goon is required to input data, or translate human conversations into dbase entries. Machines have deprived millions of people of a decent living under their own control. We are all beholden to the man or we starve. Without machines we cannot farm the vast acres of farmland anymore. The skills have largely been lost. Without machines there would be no vast car parks filled with new vehicles that nobody can afford, due to the world existing on the premise of make more because we have to keep the machines working. The whole financial system is designed so that credit is more important than cash. Credit is a product of a machine led society which needs to fulfill its own existence.
The initial promise of machines was that they would free us from the drudgery of work, but all they have done is make us work in boring jobs simply to justify the meager wages we all need to buy the stuff the machines make. The majority of us live in cities to be close to work - that is to suit the machines, not us. We went from a largely agrarian self supporting society to one where we are all dependent on machines to feed us, clothe us and entertain us. Without machines we are lost.
So tell me again about how the Luddites were wrong.
Copper doesn't appear in nature as copper ingots - it is always as ore. The methods for refining that ore have changed over the years and the older methods weren't so thorough so older copper coins had more impurities. The nature of the impurities can tell you where the copper came from and that can tell you a lot about the object itself. If no ore was being extracted from the place you trace the copper to, at the time the object was supposedly made, then you can say it's fake.
I was stopped and breathalysed at the roadside many years ago. I failed the test (orange) and so had to go to the station for a proper test on the lion machine. It also failed me (42 - legal limit is 35). But I had the right to opt for a blood test, which then takes precedence over the other tests. So I gave blood, and never heard anything about it ever again. YMMV. (I still have my blood sample from that test as a reminder).
I built several sites that used iframes. All the content came from the same site (mine), and the iframes meant not having to load the whole page repeatedly just to change some small aspect of it. This was before ajax was around, and is arguably safer than ajax anyway. One site was a formula 1 racing results page, where each frame had a different aspect of the results displayed (list of driver names, driver images, team logos, drivers scores, championship points, team championship points, etc). By clicking a link in any frame, the results were directed to the relevant frame(s), all on the main page. Saved lots of loading time, and kept everything simple and tidy. As far as I was concerned, there was no need to deep link to any particular combination of content as it was regularly changing content anyway. It was all run using simple 1 task perl scripts and mysql behind the scenes.
The root of android is androgynous, meaning 1, Having both female and male characteristics; hermaphroditic.
2. Being neither distinguishably masculine nor feminine, as in dress, appearance, or behavior.
Anything displaying such characteristics would be termed android. (See also human, humanoid; paranoia, paranoid;) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/-oid
You know it's not exactly stress free working at one of the top hundred terrorist targets.
Is that in the top hundred by actual attacks committed, or just estimated by some politician to be worthy of using to scare people. Do you know how many terrorist attacks there have been on US soil between 1961 and 2003 ?
7
And several of those were cases of one man with a mission, which we normally call "criminals" not terrorists. So explain the top 100 terrorist targets please. You have way more attacks in schools than you do terrorist incidents.
Now I Don't Believe in Imaginary Property writes in with word that the update not only does not ask, but it makes IE the default browser.
When I looked at my XP box the other day, there was a bubble notifying me of available updates. I checked to see what it was and all there was was IE8. So I unchecked the box, told it never to ask again, and that was the end of that. So why the FUD ? Can't you even configure windows properly ? Please stay away from Linux.
You say censorship, I say indoctrination. There is no need for kids to colour in pictures of buildings where 3000 people died. What happened to respect for the dead, and the proper gravity due the situation ? When they are old enough to treat such information with the proper respect, they are too old for colouring books. What's next ? Build a papier mache model of Auschwitz with realistic gas ovens and bodies ? They're kids for christs sake. For you even to think this is censorship shows your insensibilities and ranting stupidity. Would you like 5 year olds to learn about the birds and the bees by colouring in a still from a porn movie with cum shot ?
I can watch the BBC streaming news until my battery runs down. Short buffering period maybe once every 15 minutes, but generally ok. Similar with NASA tv. But neither of those use flash.
At first you can have problems like not being able to download stuff, or not having access to some sites, but then you discover that they have set you up going through a proxy. Google for login details and use those instead of the standard T-Mobile connection setup and suddenly you have free and clear access. I run my phone using them and have no issues, even when tethered. All I use is the username, password, and access point details.
he problem with the BSD license is that the only way to get money out of it is charity, because there is no license FUD. Nothing wrong with charity, but it can make paying the bills a bit difficult.
Bollocks, tell that to apple. You can take BSD licenced code and keep it - no upward financial contribution required,
Do you live in a hole ?
If you had said the GPL then you could be right but the BSD licence is specifically not built like that.

So 6 cm (< 2.5 inches) is not a big spider.
We all breathe using osmosis. The trick is getting the oxygen to the area where osmosis takes place, and that is NOT the skin on insects.
If the car gave you freedom, why are you so dependent on it ?
newintellectuals.org, like oldintellectuals.org but now with less intellect.
I don't think a wall will help if the land turns to dust and the lakes dry up.

But in the end the decision was arbitrary. There were 3 gauges in England (where the railway was invented) and a committee decided on the standard gauge.

Prick !
You obviously prefer short term wealth over long term survival. So ends the human race...
Please define 800m. Is that metres or miles ? Because 800 metres is not enough, for any known human or braking system.
