This project was born from an engineering approach to the problem of what is consciousness.
Conscience may be a root of the word consciousness, but in general usage, it usually denotes moralistic sentiment:
As science means knowledge, conscience etymologically means self-knowledge . . . But the English word implies a moral standard of action in the mind as well as a consciousness of our own actions.
--Whewell. 1913 Webster
I don't think anybody's expecting to develop an artificial intelligence that has moral values, at least not for a very long time.
I'm using Mandrake(iva) 2006, and it still only has Firefox 1.0.6 available.
Why don't you uninstall it and download the firefox package from Mozilla ?
Unpack it and run firefox-installer from the command line. Once in place, all the latest versions of firefox update themselves. I just got 1.5.0.3 today (haven't used the browser all week, so it was probably available earlier). Painless upgrades (it upgrades then tells you you need to restart the browser to complete), and it checks for compatibility with your extensions too.
I moved to this method back on FC3 because the FC upgrades were always late, and frequently broke things. Each user must have their own copy of course as it installs in the users home directory under firefox-installer.
Very nice implementation IMHO. I must start brushing up on AJAX methinks.
Work will never use it though - I can run javascript on a web page when it's on the net, but Explorer blocks it when the page is stored locally. Seems to be the wrong way round but hey... they (the IT crowd) can't do php either.
Interestingly, I am now answering my own comment while using firefox under QEMU !
Ok, QEMU is a bit slow, but it's not the only option available. However, it is usable, and should prevent the host from getting any spyware via the net. ActiveX is right out of course;-)
With the browser maximised, it looks just like a normal window on windows (huh, damn you BG). Maybe it could be marketed as "the secure internet experience" !
Back when I was a kid, there was a film called Planet of the Apes. Charlton Heston, you remember.
Well, I happened to get hold of the books, I forget how many there were but they had a lot more in there than the film(s). Basically, the story starts off with the astronauts crash landing on the planet of the apes, as does the film. But the plot continues throughout several books, until 3 of the chimps figure out how to fix the astronauts space ship and get back to earth in the 20th century. They are imprisoned for a while and the govt. ends up wanting to kill them off, especially when the female (Thira ?) gets pregnant by her mate Cornelius. They manage to escape (with the help of some friendly humans) and she has her child. The rest of the books are about the life of that child, and the gradual growth in the use of apes as human servants.
Eventually, they get pissed off with being servants, until one day Aldo (a gorilla) lets rip and kills his master, while shouting "NO !", the first words spoken by an ape on earth (the 3 chimps not withstanding). Riots ensue etc, etc. I forget now how the series ended, but I think it was leading up to the war that caused the nuclear war, that was in the far distant past for the Planet of the Apes. Nice and circular.
One interesting conclusion from this study showed that even users with a high "Spyware IQ" have a nearly 100% chance of visiting a dangerous site during 30 days of typical online searching and browsing activity."
Well the question is, did they come away from that site infected ?
Since I'm running firefox on linux, then the chances of me visiting a site and not being infected are 100%. Anyone not using IE on windows with decent AV and maybe Ad-Aware installed should also come away uninfected.
So, the idea is not to try and guess whether the site might be safe or not, but to wear a fucking condom !
If you want freeview going through a pc (the DIY part) then get a freeview pci card or usb box and plug it in. You can use Myth on Linux, or various solutions on Windows XP such MS Media centre, Media Portal, (I was going to add Meedio, but it seems they've been bought out by Yahoo), Snapstreams "Beyond TV".
If you're on linux, then you could use the Hardware compatibility list at LinuxQuestions to help in choosing a card.
There is a nice selection of DVB-T cards available at DVBSHOP in Germany, which I have used, and they are pretty good with quick orders. They also sell Common Interfaces for some of the DVB-T cards so you can add a TopUp TV CAM and smart card and get subscriber stuff.
Ok, so you have to build the box yourself, but that's DIY for ya !
If you can be bothered, here's a list of my media centre related bookmarks -
I have been using my Sony Ericsson T630 with GPRS and bluetooth to access the net on my XP laptop. It all works fine (thanks for asking), but the prices are criminal.
I didn't originally buy a phone for this type of use, but it's pretty capable. I am on a pay-as-you-go sim with virgin mobile, and they charge 0.5 pence per KB. At first, I didn't worry about that, as I had no real idea how much simple e-mail usage was going to work out costing me. Anyway, one day, I was checking the mail, and the AVG popped up saying it was out of date. Ok, so download it then - except it was a 2.5 MB dload ! I realised after a few seconds what I had just agreed to, and hit the cancel button. Too late, after about 20% of the download, I had run out of credit. I know for a fact that I had £8.00 credit when I logged on for the email ( I was keeping tabs on expected costs/usage ), so that was £8.00 for around 500 KB and some email. *!?# that !
So I am in the market for a better (cheaper) option. It seems that I will have to go contract to get 3G anyway, but I am quite happy with GPRS really. The best prices I have come across (per MB) are from British Telecom (well ok , O2 ) with their unlimited plan running at around £75 (+tax) per month. (Unlimited actually means 1GB BTW) Per meg that's not too bad. They have another plan at 512 MB / month which costs £40 (+tax) which is also not too bad (per MB). However, trying to find information on how to actually get this service is virtually impossible. For instance, I don't really need a new phone, just a sim card. I don't actually want voice services either, virgins fine for that. I can't use O2s datacard product because I dropped the laptop (while pissed) and broke the pcmcia socket off the mboard - the wifi card was in there at the time !
So, has anybody got any solid info on how to go about getting set up ?
PS. I start a new job in just over a week, and I'm going to need this stuff sorted, or go without/. every morning:<
It's only a fucking (temporary)logo on a web page !
No-one dies, google aren't gaining anything financially from doing it, and they are hardly bringing the artist into disrepute.
Do the family want the artist to disappear into the mists of time ? I'm pretty sure any real artist would welcome free publicity.
What's next, banning google from indexing images in searches ? And as someone pointed out, it wasn't even his work, it was "in the style of". Would you get as pissed off if google wished you happy birthday on their homepage ? After all they haven't asked permission to use your name.
As Robin williams would say, you are seriously in need of a blowjob !
While it's a nice sentiment to suggest that mankind cut back on energy usage, the question is "to what end"?
In history, what usually happens to a species that becomes almost solely dependant on one particular resource. A species that actually adapts itself to live using that resource, to the extent that large portions of it's poulation would die off if that resource were to be removed.
Let's remove that resource and see what happens. Oh, they're all dying off.
So while your post is in fact correct, in that we can't just use less energy, it highlights the fact that we, as technological humans, have painted ourselves into a deadly corner. Throughout our technological history, we have relied on one thing - finding new resources. Unfortunately we live in a closed system, so instead of always having a new continent to exploit, we have to make the most of what we have. (This is one of my major arguments for manned space travel - find new resources, whether to bring them back to earth, or build new colonies, thereby reducing humanities dependence on earth).
I suggest we: a) Find other resources to provide our energy before our main ones run out. b) Reduce our dependence on energy, especially for frivolous purposes. c) Reduce the actual energy expenditure involved in any particular case (make things more efficient).
None of this is new, it's called economising, something which is neccessary to keep a stable economy.
BTW, I hope you got a good supply of bullets for that.22 of yours, coz, without energy of some sort, you're stuffed when they run out. Also you might need a silencer, coz in a battle in the post-techno world, surprise and stealth will usually win, not gung-ho bravado.

Without copyright licensing (and copyright expiration, grrr Disney), then the creative process becomes something that people can only do in their spare time, when they're not working at their day jobs. I hate to tell you, but making art is not exactly an easy process. You don't just sit down and think 'I know, I'll make a hit single!' and then spend a few hours a night for the rest of the week polishing it up. It takes hard work, it takes passion, it takes enthusiasm.
And most importantly, it takes luck. A hit single exists only because the fickle public like it and buy it. You could spend a year "creating" a piece of shit , but under your rationale, we should still have to pay you in perpituity just because it's "what you do" !
So we should not contribute to the artists that make music we wish to listen to? They should give us their creativity for free? We should not have to pay for performances?
Classic straw man. As was your crack about only getting $15 for an album. If that album sold 1 million copies, you stand to get $15,000,000. Does that cover your expenses for a year, in any way, at all, hmmmm ?
But no, apparently, not only do you get to make $15M for 1 years work, you get to make money from that years work, for the rest of your life ! And if anybody dares to suggest that maybe you've had enough, you start complaining that your fucking family won't be able to survive without the income from a 20 year old lucky break ! Last I heard, families of lottery winners can not expect a regular payout from the lottery.
Breathe......
If I'm ranting, it's because I saw a BBC news article yesterday, where some pimply lawyer was asking for the UK copyright laws to be brought into line with the US, because it simply isn't fair that people who made a record in the sixties, can't expect their entire line of descendants to ponce off it !
Colour me disgusted.
In fact, I don't care if they extend copyright to infinity, it will only cause me never to buy another cd/dvd ever again. Wonder how much money great-nephew Larry (on the mothers sisters brother-in-laws side) will be able to expect then ?
It's funny, someone wrote a song which said "Pop will eat itself". How ironic.
If you honestly think this, then you don't understand what art is all about.
Bwhaa haah haaa haaah haaahahaha ! And you do do you ? Apparently "Art" is all about making money, when all along I thought it was about self expression.
Did Michelangelo get paid for painting the Sistine Chapel ? Why yes he did ! Did Michelangelo get paid every time somebody looked at the ceiling in the Sistine Chapel ? No, no he didn't.
Last I heard, Michelangelo is considered a great artist.
Do you want to see it again ?
*shudder*

Pretty vivid imagination eh !
