  2. Re:Why does the FCC actually have that power? on FCC Levies Record Indecency Fine · · Score: 1

Being European, I don't have the right to criticise the standpoint of the FCC - but I'm not too old to be surprised by the things that I see in the world. And I have to admit that this bit surprised me:-

"Janet Jackson's breast-flashing Super Bowl halftime show two years ago, finding that the network didn't do enough to protect viewers from the flash of skin."
I actually saw this, and it is the use of the word "protect" which surprises me. My idea is that if anybody really needed "protection" from this they probably need help from a doctor or a mental health specialist. Anybody that is except Miss Jackson, that is. She seemed to register surprise - and not pleasant surprise - when the incident occurred. I can quite understand that she (as a performer) would probably not want to sue the network (an eventual employer) for allowing what might be termed unprovoked assault to happen. How a government body such as the FCC could miss punishing those responsible - and especially those directly responsible escapes me completely, however.

I'd like to offer a suggestion which, while only a suggestion , would allow the FCC to make a positive contribution to "The American Way". They could start looking at the content of the "commercial breaks" and/or the "messages from our sponsor". They might distribute fines for such things as

    1. Implying (by the content) that the audience is moronic
    2. Displaying stupidity in public.
    3. Generally being assholes (if you'll excuse the expression).

I am quite certain - for I have the privilege of visiting America - that the FCC would:
    • gather a lot more money in this way.
    • improve the quality of life for many Americans.
    • discourage the use of public stupidity in television advertising.
Once they rid America of public stupidity on television, they could always attack public nudity.

I find that public bodies world-wide, such as the American FCC, have a regrettable tendency to forget that the folks who are part of the work-a-day world are more or less forced to rely on television for majority of their evening entertainment . They could do such a lot for us - fines for advertisers (or networks) who increase the sound level during the "message from our sponsor" for example. It really is a pity that they are so divorced from the normal world - but the above is only my opinion

  3. Re:Asians are Smarter Because They Eat Rice on The Twists of History and DNA · · Score: 1

    This caught my eye:-

"In a study of East Asians".
East Asians ? And did the study confirm its findings by checking West Asians ? Or couldn't they find any West Asians to study ? I have to admit that, while I'm fairly confident of finding an Asian population by travelling eastwards, I'm not sure myself where West Asians are to be found.

    This left me open-mouthed:-

"in the region of the gene that causes Gaucher's disease,"
And where exactly is this region ? Eastwards or Westwards ? Enquiring minds want to know ! And "Gaucher", what part of speech is this - does it mean "more gauche" and thus more awkward ? Or is it the side of the road that the French think that the British drive on - as in "la gauche" ? Or, if we're to stay in French, is this some kind of socialist propaganda - as in "La Gauche" ? As I said, enquiring minds .... like to know !

And finally you hit me with this:-

"Translation: "Asians are smarter than europeans because they eat rice.""
Now I thought I understood the title of your post and, I admit it, I was going to counter with a comment regarding slanted eyes. Your translation stopped me in my tracks though ! Does this mean that Asians are smarter because of the rice in their diet ? Or does it mean that Europeans become less smart because they eat rice ? You leave me in doubt. And I hope that you'll understand that, as a non-Asian European who eats in Chinese restaurants on occasion and enjoys rice in salads during the summer months, you leave me worried.

But what the heck - have a good day anyhow.

Well gosh, and even well golly. Couldn't help noticing this bit

"you know very well microsoft and its business practices don't really have to be equated with america... they just are in europe. anti americanism is antiamericanism."
And I agree with you, sir, Microsoft and its business practices don't really have to be equated with America. When I read your lines however, it appears to me that YOU are equating Microsoft with America. It further appears to be your opinion that Microsoft is to be considered as being above the law of the land. Would like to point out that my opinion is not identical to yours. In my view, the law is the law and should be the same for everyone. People, companies, or (you'll excuse me, sir) personal idols, who do not obey the law must expect punishment - at least in my opinion.

I must say that I was more than surprised by:

"-you assume you are so high minded and superior? you certainly don't act like it, more like a petulent child."
I couldn't even find it in me to be insulted by your wandered drivel. I'll point out however that if you (or Microsoft, for that matter) expect to force your opinions upon us, here in Europe, you'd best dry out Georgie Bush and see can you get him to declare war on us right now - it'll save you time. You might want to notice that wars are not won by Anonymous Cowards, though.

I must admit to having been astonished by the repetition of your gratuitous insult

    "and really, %#@ u europe."
and I can't say too much. If I say "and really, %#@ u america", I go against the very many kind people that I've met there - and it really would be an atrocious way to thank them for their hospitality. If I simply say "and really, %#@ u", I lack sincerity since I don't want to "%#@ u" (who would?). If I say "go %#@ yourself" firstly, I'd be just as stupidly vulgar as you, and secondly, it's obvious that you can't do that - since you're obviously constantly "engaged" with your pet goat. No, my dear sir, this repetition of stupid anonymous vulgarity leaves me without a valid response. Of course, should you ever care to leave the cloak of your anonymity, and we were to meet face to face, then I feel I might find a well merited response.

"MS should pull all MS licenses from everyone in the EU, then turn the courts against those entities"
and it rather seems to me that you may be a little confused. You may like to notice that the licenses which you want to see pulled were sold to the entities you want to see them pulled from - by Microsoft. They might buy them back if they wanted to stay legal. They might declare them to be void - if they wanted to commit fraud. But, per se, they can't pull them as the police might "pull" your driving license if you commit some offense.

A Microsoft license is granted to allow you to legally use their software, and it is granted in exchange for money The only legal way for Microsoft to invalidate a license once they've sold it (apart from buying it back, which is against their religion since money with them is strictly a one way flow) would be to prove that the software user had violated the terms of that license. This would have to be done on an individual basis - since there is nothing in the license which forbids the user from:

    • Being European
    • Breathing
    • Having a life (you should try this)

They could, of course, threaten to leave Europe as they threatened to leave South Korea a short while ago. Last I heard they were still in Korea. But this threat would surely bring us to our knees. The last possibility (that I can think of) would have them quite simply obey the law of the land where they are doing business - something they might want to learn to do quickly, given the circumstances. But then, "MICROSOFT" and "QUICKLY" are contradictory terms , are they not?

    I notice this bit too,

"this bs is purely political nonsense. a free stab at america"
and I have a simple question to put to you. You may want to enlighten we ignorant Europeans. Is Microsoft, together with its business practices, now to be equated with America ?. Please take your time and think about your answer. You will know the song "land of the free, home of the brave". I'm sure that you would YOU would not want to be instrumental in changing that to "land of the slaves, home of the knaves".

We might modify this quote to suit the situation in hand and get "The race is not always to the richest but that's the way to bet". Might explain the reason for the Open Source thought pattern. How much did Microsoft make last year ? Did I hear $40 billion ? Truth to tell, I can't remember if it was $40 million, $40 billion, or $40 trillion - either way it sounds like enough to make it possible for them to do pretty much what they want though
