  1. Short selling.. on Microsoft Source Follow-Up · · Score: 1

The Microsoft stock is dropping rapidly.. unfortunately for their investors - especially with the events of the past two weeks!

I got some rather interesting feedback yesterday when I asked if OS coders would use this to improve Wine and whether that would be legitimate. Of course I was flamed! But hey. Now answer this - why would looking at the code instantly taint you from joining any OS initiative. ie. If you had seen the code, what would stop you from coding part of a new groupware client, or what would stop you from coding an OS DVD Player.. I'm sure the effects aren't so far reaching?
Please don't be too harsh on me - I'm stupid!

  2. So is this the beginning of something... on Windows 2000 & Windows NT 4 Source Code Leaks · · Score: 2, Interesting

as this source code is now out, can we expect people in the wine project to start using it as a basis for their coding. I'm sure it would provoke a legal battle of the SCO type (but with reason this time) but surely with a bit of clever coding and a bit of reference to this code wine could be advanced very far. Sure it's illegal, but so have many things Microsoft has done. I haven't been able to get through to that link (/.ed). This source code could, theoretically, be a big step for ReactOS and the WineX and Wine projects particularly as it is 2000 which has support for a lot of the stuff that NT does.. very exciting!

  3. Interesting article... on Is Open Source Fertile Ground for Foul Play? · · Score: 1

..open source has always been a controversial issue.. here is an interesting article on the debate "GPL Good, Commercial Bad..." It cites GCC as an example of how destructive OS can be in that it removed the market for any other type of compiler. Can it be said that Mozilla has in effect done an "Internet explorer" with the open source world? It is now almost an integral part of any distrib.
    Thoughts?

  4. Authors overusing themes... on King Rat · · Score: 4, Interesting

.. has been a long standing problem with everyone. This book is not unique in the way that the outline is so cliche, but it still underlines a big point. It has been extremely rare to find books with completely original themes recently, you seem to have the framed school, the lawyer school, etc. What has happened to the Chuck Palahniuks of the world? Even his books have become too samy samy.. is it me, or do we need another Wodehouse to rise up?

  5. The topic here is rather misleading... on Scientists Claim They Cloned Humans · · Score: 5, Insightful

The team detailed here has not cloned a human has such. It has cloned the stem cells in an embryo specifically for stem cells. The claims that they have made (also made in New Scientist this week) are not as radical as the claims made by the Raelians and Panayiotis Zavos, and so are much more believable than can be expected by looking at this title :) I say all power to the team doing this as they are obviously going for something that is going to eventually become a pioneering field for saving life. I think the key issue is that they are cloning the cells (i believe) rather than the entire embryo, and so the issue of Sanctity of Life does not come into it. Tim

  6. Isn't it scary... on Blackout Cause: Buggy Code · · Score: 0

...what badly audited code can do these days? In this case the results weren't nearly as disastrous as they could have been. For example if a similar software error had prevent an alarm from going off in a Nuclear powerplant, we could be on for another Chernobyl. Now one could argue that all code in that kind of situation would be properly auditted, but I'm sure the GE code had been tested fairly thoroughly. I find it quite disturbing that occurences like this can happen..

  7. PCI-X on Own a Piece of An Apple-Based Supercomputer · · Score: 3, Interesting

It is nice to see the inclusion of PCI-X, we can hope that this is the start of the end of "old" PCI. I was a bit confused by the decision to include Firewire in this machine. I know it is an apple kind of penchant, but surely a server won't need firewire. Who wants to use a firewire hard disk with a server? You're more likely to back up onto tape. It seems akin to a High End commodity intel server having an Audigy sound card with optical out, I don't think there is much point. I think some of the features could have been thought about more on the machine rather than lamely following the tradition of previous iMACs. However, it looks like a great machine, and Mac is coming up in mine, and many other x86 users (I believe) opinions.
