It seems the card isn't swiped and doesn't leave your hands under 25$ transactions.
And if there was an easy way to abuse the system, I wouldn't mind this 25$ limit: buy a DVD, (in an other shop) blank CDRs, cigarettes...
Don't be so pessimistic my son! We've still got the MPAA, Microsoft and the litigious bastards left! (even is SCO is in a really bad shape these days...)
IIRC, bandwidth is what you paid to your ISP and it's limited as: the more you pay, the faster you go, which means you can neither suck your bandwidth nor steal it! And by the way, it's been proven that bandwidth doesn't cost ISPs any money if you use it at a 100%...
Seriously, if you can't upgrade your OS to Windows XP because your PC is too old, try to switch to Linux or one of the BSD instead, it's really worth it!
And what exactly is your definition of undesirable? A friend of mine sometimes wears a kippa, he used to be very undesirable!
OTOH, I would happily castrate all those guys who drive too fast on the road or are too stupid to understand what I'm trying to tell, but this would be neither ethical nor efficient.
What I find funny is that you imply everything is given at birth from your parents (disease, laziness, stupidity, arrogance)! Had you been to school when you were a child, you would have been taught that environment can change everything (well, almost...)
I have not RTFA but your idea seems wrong and I would have said the same thing if I hadn't seen that the action is determined by how long the button is pressed. With Mario whether you press 1/10s or 1sec, Mario jumps, the action is not different. But in Rockman (or Megaman if you prefer) the hero launches a big attack instead of a small shot if you press the button longer!
The best part is the client runs at the minimum priority, so you only give up cpu cycles if you don't need them.
This is something I don't understand: I have either Seti or Folding (not at the same time) running on my Linux box in real-time priority and I can still compile, listen to Shoucast and do everything I want (even launch mplayer if you wish). Of course it's more difficult if you want to play a DirectX game, but I don't see the use of these programs running only at 1% of the CPU when you can do more because the CPU usage is constantly modified by the system.
I think I'd rather stick to professionally written and edited material for my kids.
Have you ever SEEN professional material on a computer? I'm serious, I've used biology and physics programs in class that were crippled with mistakes and drawn so crudely I wanted to puke when I was obliged to use them.
Material from books is really better and more accurate even if it's less fun for children.
A large portion of the 'graduates' in the Dallas school system can not read or write at the 3rd grade level.
Same thing in France (and maybe Europe even if governments don't want the word to be spread).
Laptops broken, stolen, mainly used for games. Maybe the money could be spent on books instead.
I'm studying at the University and I read... books! I just launch my browser for the stuff that is likely to change (like APIs). Does history change so often you need to buy books every week? (last time I checked, WW2 was still 39-45 if you wanted to know). Books are great, they just want laptops because it's l33t, not useful.
A friend of mine is writing OpenGL programs but he needs these programs to be really fast, that's why he's using C, and memory management is the heaven for him: you can make copies of structures ten times faster than any other language, it's like using assembly language to write a faster algorithm.
You can write portable applications with Java or Ruby (I hate Python;) but if you need optimised code, C is the best thanks to its relatively low-level.
When I was young, which means 10 years ago, we had something called parents: when a child was missing school, the teacher would take his phone and call the parents.
But if a child is stupid enough to come to school just to sneak out, instead of not coming at all, I can't help you...
No, they're just stupid. A child is not an animal, it's a human being. Why don't they give their child chastity belts so that pedophiles can't rape them? This is called education: watch over your kid, but don't fuck with him because he's trying to live his kid's life. If you're scared that he might be kidnapped, just teach him to cry in the loudest way possible, it's very easy.
The CCC already did this with an office building in Berlin... The surface was bigger and you had the SDK to send pictures (animated or not).
And by the way, I this this chandelier idea sucks, it's not hacker's technology, it's art and advertisement combined.
in RPN it would be "funny 1 +" or (defun mod_up (funny) (funny 1 +)) if you're one of those crazy LISP programmers that forced me to learn LISP at school!
I don't live in the USA but aren't kids obliged to watch TV (and ads at the same time) at school, like some "educational" channel that would have signed a contract with the school? Is it any different with what we have here?
VoIP means "Voice Over IP", and IP means "the Internet".
VoIP can be coded in a software (which can be Free, as in Free Beer), and that's why it is neither a good, nor a service.
They can't and won't monitor encrypted traffic because cryptography can be done in real time now (a small Diffie-Hellman IIRC and they're fscked), that's why they will bill everyone in the end...
When a government need THIS kind of details about a citizen, I don't consider I live in a free world anymore. If they are so scared about crimes, they should concentrate on education so that kids won't continue these crimes in the future. As for the iris scan, what is its use apart from airports? and what if I don't need to take the plane, which means I don't need a passport?
It seems to prevent stolen cards from being used but this kind of scheme may always be cracked or removed, like the french Yes Card where all the passwords were accepted, whatever was typed at the counter. And if you're not into technical stuff, you can stick to the good ol' gun on the head: if you don't speak, i pull the trigger...
In the end, it will be just another way to increase the price of the wonderful services provided by the banks:-S
