Russia doesn't fear the West. Putin just wants somebody to be the bad guy - and we do that splendidly. We're much less likely than Islam (in it's various incantations) to come back and bite. It also gives him an excuse to work on the military - something that's good for his hold on power and for his cronies pocket books.

I work in physical commodities trading. Think cargoes of fuel, grain, derivatives, etc. 90% of my deals are closed via Yahoo, either directly with counterparties or via brokers. Brokers "flash" obscure quotes for things such as Eurobob/WTI spreads, ethanol, calendar spread swaps, truckloads of X ready to go to Y, etc. Not sure if there are any profesions who rely on Yahoo as much as mine. (Incidentally, a lot of guys in other markets use AOL, mostly natural gas).

You are saying that a significant part of our core economic infrastructure depends on AOL and Yahoo?

As a physician, I hate to agree, but I would avoid saying anything not exactly relevant to the problem. Much of the doctor-patient relationship is based on trust which is in part based on privacy of the conversations. With electronic records, privacy is a thought that fluttered in the wind and disappeared years ago.

  10. Re:See that mark on the wall? That's my height. on DEA Wants Access To Medical Records Without Warrant (thedailybeast.com) · · Score: 2

We ask height because it's part of the 'vital signs package'. Admittedly it's stupid when it's done every week, but federal regulations (who else?) kinda sort of encourage this (it's complicated). It's also a way to track identity abuse. If you gained 50 pounds and 8 inches in a month then somebody ought to look into it a bit closer. This happens not infrequently with Medicaid patients.

It's hardly the most idiotic thing US medicine does.

That's the rub. It's a pretty drastic 'cure'. They picked people who would, in all likelihood die or be greatly debilitated by their disease and tested it on them. The interesting point is that it may be a general reboot of the immune system, good for many immune system diseases (MS, Chron's, ulcerative colitis, Rheumatoid arthritis and yes, Lupus).

But it's going to be a while before you can do this in your local community hospital.

Actually, yes. GA pilots have a much worse safety profile that commercial carriers. Much worse.

That's because the FAA has long allowed you to take more risks by yourself than with paying passengers. The big issue (aside from the FAA's inability to cope with the modern world) is that there is definately a slippery slope between casual ride sharing and flying somewhere with passengers for a buck. You aren't supposed to make money flying passengers with the current ride sharing rules - but commercial airlines have lost money for years. Should we allow them to run unregulated passenger services because they don't make money?

This seems like a case of some early promising research not quite panning out and one hell of a lot of money being fronted in the meanwhile.
